@Vilhelm22 @jonwil I actually recommended a Forest Exploration subtheme which I hope is done in 2021. It could have bears and birds. But it could also include the first ever deer and wolf moulds. Not like the huskies in the Arctic Exploration subthrme. But actual forest wolves.

This subtheme would also give us some subtle, yet comedic closure as the current state of Castle in Lego - dead. It would mostly focus on the ancient castle and village ruins of Lego City during the 16th Century right on the outskirts of the city.

New Characters Introduced:

Forest Wood - an avid nature enthusiast and tree hugger

Robin Featherweight - a young bird watcher and nurturer.

As for explorers as a whole....while I don't agree with emphasizing action outside of the city in a theme (police outside of the city included) about action in regards to city life, I do have to take into account that during the late 90s and early 2000s, the explorers (while they were their own themes) were still subsidiaries of town. So it makes sense. Along with the fact that there is really no other way to put them out there. Unless they made a theme like Outdoors or something. But I doubt that'll happen.

Btw, the named minifigure in the ship set is just a different version of Harl. He doesn't really fit there in my opinion. But he's there so I guess I have to deal with it. Then again, I'm not even buying it.

The €10 "Starter Sets" made those explorer themes a bit nicer, they were a nice way to get 3-4 figures, an animal and some small builds.

Sets like the Mining Team were generic enough to be used for Construction workers.

The focus has shifted to mostly single vehicles on their €10 sets (Exception was the 2020 Stunt Team with 2 smaller vehicles/minfigs)

2019 still had 2 full people packs and a Blister Pack for 4 Space figures.

I wonder if they'll still make a 4-minifig blister pack for City later, or a full People Pack.

Agreed.  Each one has had a public transport vehicle as one of the highlights - single decker bus in 2014, orange tram in 2016, and double decker bus in 2018.  Wonder what this one will be...

A yellow tram according to one person on this forum. He said it in an early response.

This guy named @Maxentius said it.

"Hello guys! I'm usually a seller at a local LEGO Store in Budapest (but it is closed at this moment because of COVID-19). I heard a rumour from by store leader that there will be a big set arriving at sometime in the summer including some vehicles, shops and a yellow tram. It will likely be the successor of the 60097 City Square set."

I don't really care what anyone says. Public Transport is a vital civilian service. I think they should get their own subtheme instead of just being in town or a mega set.

Nice.  As a trains fan (I’m seriously hyped about 10277!) I was hoping for a tram, but wasn’t going to get my hopes up.  Plus, the last passenger train/tram which we had which had yellow as a main colour I can think of is Cargo Railway 4559 (1996), released before I was born.  I don’t count the Super Chief, as yellow is one of the 3 main colours and only appears on the locomotive.  Looking forward to integrating this, as I missed 60097.

As often, I agree with you.  In my city at the moment I’ve got nowhere near enough buses, and more cargo trains than passenger trains.  In a city, it’s just not realistic.  We need more sets like 8404.

Or 60154. That was my favorite set from 2017. As far as trains go, I don't have a big enough town, so there isn't much room for trains. However, I've been screaming for City to make a rapid transit unit. I guess I can make room for one of those.

But City most definitely needs a much better way to give transit workers some spotlight. I actually came up with a way to do it. I think its possible for Lego City to actually do it.

Recently, I have formed a habit of taking outcast City sets and building subthemes around them. Examples include; the transit system, the medical field, the postal service, and even the news if you could believe it. These services may not involve as much action as police or firefighters but they are still vital services to City life. I don't see why it would hurt to give them subthemes.

We never know though. City might surprise us next year.

60154 of course! I forgot it even though I own it ! Rapid transit would be good - and I want a bendy bus!

It’s true about underrated subthemes - when has there been a post office under City branding? And medical only comes out every 6 years.  My favourite subthemes of the past have all been practically stopped - Construction, Harbour, Transport, and the changes to trains in recent years, from so many to so few, is painful to say the least.  Still can’t understand the absence of a train station with 60197/8 - I would guess it was cancelled because of the absence of any set 60199, but why?

It seems there has never been a post office under the City branding. The last one I could find is from 1985 (6689) which I coincidentally bought at a LEGO fair a year or two ago. And there was also one (6362) 3 years before that in 1982 which was also the very first set to contain anything post related in LEGO. I wish medical was also on a 3 year rotation like police and fire. I also still don't understand why there was no City train station in 2018 either.

Ok! If they were to do a public transit subtheme for City, they could easily stick a bendy bus in there. Check out these bus MOCs. My dude Benjamin Karl from Facebook made three different buses from parts of the bus from 60154. If I didn't know any better, I'd say these were prototypes for a cancelled City subtheme. He also did a shuttle bus and a mini bus.

Oddly enough, the closest we have ever gotten to postal service in City was the mail van and plane from 2008, the starter set from 2016 and the postal plane that we got this year. People on this forum often argue with me and say that City is as diverse as you can get. But during the 2010s, there wasn't really nothing that was new. Matter of fact, very few sets actually interested me throughout the 2010s compared to everything else, which is what we see pretty much every winter and summer (ahem police ahem explorers ahem). But so far, I have seen minor buildings like a post office, a grocery store or a news station.

I agree! Perhaps Lego should do medical year in between classic police subtheme year and fire subtheme year. Basically a year where ambulances would be the first responders subtheme for City.

We did have that little platform that came with the passenger train. But that doesn't really get me excited like the big train stations that they used to release back in the early 2010s. My town doesn't have any railways as its pretty small. But what will you do for those customers who want a grand central station in their town? Take the hint, Lego! TAKE.....THE......HINT!!!!!!

That sort of platform has come out with all the passenger trains under the City theme - 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018.  Pretty sure there was one in sets like the Metroliner too.

The 2007, 2010, and 2014 sets are what I’m talking about.  7997, 7937, and 60050 if I remember correctly.  These always looked awesome, and were quite easily modified to work together if you had bought two.  As I said previously, pretty sure 60199 was a cancelled station.

Yeah... I might have a little too much rails in my town. I could probably reduce it a little, but I kinda also want to keep most of the track so all my trains and stations have room. :P

But to return to the subject of this thread, I'm really excited for the City D2C. Especially for the rumoured yellow tram which will go well with the 2 previous trams. =D

Same here! Maybe we'll get a little convenience store front or something like that in the set.

A minifig-size version of the Blue Fury hot rod from 1995!

Thanks for the info, BrickWild! :classic:

This hot rod will for sure go very well with this year's tuning workshop.

Well, let's see what seems likely for the big downtown set:

  • pizza / burger / other food stand - Til now every bigger city set had a food stand, so it's very supposable that there'll be one, too
  • cycle shop - The last bicycle shop was released back in 2013 in the City theme and back in 2014 in the Creator 3 in 1 theme.
  • music store - TLG has release already so decent number of music instruments (saxophone, guitar, flute, rattle, trumpet. e-guitar, e-bass), so this would be possible and even completely new.
  • Lego Store - The last Lego Store was released two years ago as an exclusive set and the last city set that had one was back in 2015. So - although I'd prefer another shop over it since I already have 2,5 different Lego Stores - it seems likely that there'll be one.
  • grocery - The minifigs need some food and drink. Imo a seperate big supermarket would be better, but a small, old grocery would be nice, too.
  • jewelry - I think of the new police special forces painting which gives me the impression that there has to be something to break in for a burglar to hunt him.
  • museum - In principle we had a museum in 2018. But it was very small and kept in a modern style. So I could nevertheless see a museum in ancient architectual style and with different exhibits.
  • tram station - This is nearly for sure since the rumor says that there'll be a tram included in the set.
  • town hall - Especially if this set was the rumored D2C set, then I could very well see this.
  • apartment building - "-"

Buildings that seem to be unlikely:

  • coffee shop - There was already one last year.
  • general toy shop - There was already one last year, too.
  • hotel - The 2018 City Exclusive already had one - so no.
  • train station - With after the rumors "only" a tram but no train included in this se, I regrettably don't see the chance for a train station - although one is utterly needed.
  • office building - Regrettably I don't see this, at least not if the set wasn't 18+.
  • sports shop - With last year's Ski Resort containing a winter sports shop, another sports shop (even if it had only summer sports accessories) seems to me unlikely.

Do you agree? Do you have some additional ideas?

  • Yeah! I haven't seen a stationary pizza parlor in a long time because 2013 is a long bricking time! I hope its yellow and burgundy like the pizza van from 2017.
  • The cycle shop isn't all that interesting to me as its kinda dull sounding. But if they were to do one next year, I'll take it.
  • Now a music store on the other hand would be something new and unseen. I'll take it. Especially if Poppy Star from LCA owned it. That one or a radio station would be good.
  • Lego Store? I dunno about a Lego Store right now considering that we still have this one on the shelves.
  • No excuses Lego, I want a standalone grocery store >>>> complete with a food transporting truck. Now that is a set that I wouldn't mind being slapped into the town subtheme of City.
  • For the jewelry store, I see it happening. But if it doesn't, I'll just build one using the piece from the dog unit set. As for that special forces figure, you do know that's just an upgraded version of Duke DeTain, right?
  • I didn't really care for the museum from 2018. I prefer the one from 2013. Sadly, that one is rare and hard to find.
  • I see the tram station happening most definitely because there is a tram that goes with that.
  • I hope the town hall has Mayor Freck!
  • I don't see City stepping into the house game anytime soon. There was a home in 2010 and I heard it failed in sales.

  • Well....we did get two in the same year. I wouldn't write it off just yet.
  • Yeah....too soon.
  • Sadly, they didn't do one for the 2018 trains wave.
  • I hope they do make an office building someday.
  • Yeah! Ski Resort was just released.

I do agree and yes I do have some ideas.

  • Transit Center - How about an actual "Port Authority" style building with a ticket window and indoor waiting area?
  • Barber Shop - Ok fine! Its unlikely. It doesn't hurt to put it out there though.
  • Car Dealership - We did get one this year, but it was really just a trailer.
  • Electronics Store - Well, I have seen computer pieces along with keyboard pieces and TVs. There are also some phone pieces too.
  • Schoolhouse - Children need to learn, don't they?
  • Hardware Store
Posted

I didn't think of a barber shop and an electronics store although there haven't been any inside the City theme so far - and yes, they sound a great idea, @Brandon Pea. Esp. the electronics shop - if TLG wanted to, they could even release a small smartphone shop instead which for sure even kids and teens would like.

In contrast I don't think that we'll already now get a new car dealership. And a hardware shop and a school are imo much better as stand-alone sets.

Which I completely agree with is that we do need a food delivery truck - or at least any kind of delivery truck. Where should the shops get there stuff they sell otherwise?! TLG has been learning (even from us AFOLS) in the past years and more and more civilian stuff seems to appear. So since this downtown city set seems to be miminum as huge as the one from 2015, I could well imagine that there'll be one delivery truck included (the set from 2015 had a Lego delivery truck for the Lego Store, too).

Yeah! The school most definitely needs to be standalone. Especially with a school bus.

We'd either get one as a great vehicle or as part of a grocery store set. I hope more for the latter than the former.

I forgot about a post office - it could be that one will be in the big city set since there was the small postal plane in the Great Vehicles theme this year plus we haven't seen any post office yet since the start of the City theme in the mid 00s.

Btw: I looked it up and came to following result (at least for Germany):

  • Last year all summer sets were available from S@H in June - the June and the July sets plus the Exclusive. This year we haven't heard anything til now about any exclusive City set. (Or could the rumored D2C set be meant with it? And is the D2C set that rumored big city set or not?)
  • Last year the Ski Resort as well as the advent calendar were sold via S@H as well as in regular toy shops since September and we got pics of the Ski Resort only very shortly before its release.

To come to a result: I can't imagine that we won't see any civilian sets this year. Plus several fan sites have listed 3-5 more City sets plus the advent calendar for this year. On the one hand if some of them were to be for sale already in some days, I wouldn't understand why we haven't gotten any information about them yet. On the other hand I can't imagine that TLG will release a third - civilian - wave firstly in September - or can you imagine? There are many questions. And I must say that I don't find it very kind of TLG to not give us any kind of information til now.

Yeah! But last year, the town sets didn't come out until August. So we'll probably have to wait.

Looks like the City summer sets (the underwater and airport stuff) is being released on 1 June in the Netherlands. :)

I haven't seen the buggy or hot rod yet though overhere.

I hate it when stuff is region exclusive. :(
