The hood doesn't look long enough to house a 12-stud inline 6 engine. If it does, the engine will have to stick out in the driver's cabin.

Actually it would end up 14 studs long

All the more reason to not expect a proper inline 6 engine. The most recent creation wiyth a proper inline 6 doesnt end up so well.

If I remember correctly from Smyth's webpage, there was inline 6 cylinder engine mentioned and from other Land Rovers I know that only inline 4 and V6 and V8 are used, so I think also that V6 is more likely and it would be proper Lego fake engine and not axles that go up and down...

@allanp I think bigger frames can be used inside bodywork construction...

You better explore (I am lazy) current lineup of engine at Jaguar and Land Rover models. I am doubt they keep inline 6. Modern cars use inline 4 turbo and v6 with/without turbo

Here are specifications for Discovery; please look at last version. Defender will be highly "based" on Discovery with different wheelbases...there is no inline 6 engine on real platform

In February 2019, Jaguar Land Rover shocked the automotive press by announcing their long-rumored inline-6 engine. Instead of being a conventional engine, the new 3.0L petrol inline-6 motor combines with a 48 volt electric architecture to enable an electric supercharger, belt-starter generator and extended engine shut offs while coasting and/or while stopped in traffic. The new engine is initially being offered in the Range Rover Sport in two power outputs, 360PS and 400PS. Both are considered to be mild hybrid electric vehicles. The 48 volt electrical architecture JLR announced with this new engine is similar to Mercedes-Benz's "EQ Boost" and Audi's 48V system available on their new models such as the A6, A7, A8 and SQ7.

Brace yourself (or yourselves) for an inline-6 Mack-style engine.

That is what I do not need...

Sounds like a more or less true... The known I6 (inline) engine 3.2L i6 of Freelander 2 has 84mm cylinder diameter (that is a subcompact cars size) whereas the cylinder stroke is prellty bigger - 96mm, so that i6 is very short engine because of relatively small cylinders.

As it's volume was 3.2L, I see no reason to have a bigger cylinders here, for a new engine. So returning back to our toys, the standard Technic engine parts would be too big for a such engine type... Or... Do you remember a very "powerful" 42070 with a "huge" i4? Hope it's not related to 420110 anyways.

It would be great to see this inline 6 + electric super charger details implemented in the set.

I honestly think they'd probably do it.

My eyes are constantly drawn towards the line of roofing tile along the flanks. It just feels so misplaced.

Since it is a sequential gearbox, I wonder if it will have flappy paddles as many land rovers do.

That would be awesome because this set is actually quite small compared to the 42083 for example so its harder to have such a complex drivetrain.

Reminds me of 42096. Not in looks obviously but in concept.

It seems to me that the wheels have a deeper mounting point thatn the regular ones. This means they could be used with the tractor tyres and new hubs to get steering point even closer to the center. But I dont get it why they couldn't use the same wheels on the Porsche though.

The Porsche rims are licensed as far I remember, so can not use for other brand. Same seems to be the situation with these rims, I am actually happy to get new ones, which also look nice.

Im actually mildly interested in this set, even if i dont care about off-road stuff usually. Feature wise im not expecting much, especially with independent suspension already mentioned, let's just hope that for an off-road model lego actually manage to make the springs tough enough to keep the car up.

Those new wheel arches are quite something though, i assume that just like the porsche arches, these will show up in more future sets.

Also, with the chiron last year, now this car this year (not to mention the 911 RSR), i would very much love it if lego makes a habit out off releasing a new large car every year. Ill happily buy one of these each year .

The leaked set images are all over the automotive press today ... 4 speed sequential box, 3 diffs, independent suspension, Straight 6 engine and a working winch.

I think the engine will be like the Mack to get it under the bonnet

Maybe adapted into some kind of Jeep? Perhaps the Wrangler?

Almost looks like a PF battery box (I know it is not) with the orange element sticking out.

Could replace it with an actual battery box if adding PF.

Makes me wonder if they will go for the old style 4 speed like in the GT3RS, or if we get a single half of the 42083 gearbox with a wavecatch. Either way the shifter will be some sort of 90 degree stepper, and should make it extremely easy to incorporate some kind of 4>1 gearblock.

A mack style engine would be a disappointment, and given the 13L beam in the hood, i can still see a proper fake engine work, take the two front studs of the curved panel at the front as grill-space, start the 6I at 13L beam, and you just need one more stud beyond the end of the 13L beam, which puts the end of the engine (from what i can tell) smack in front of a-pillars, giving you a few studs of dashboard space to work out a few gears down to the gearbox/driveline.

It will be interesting to see them cram an engine, shifter unit, steering AND gearbox all in the front of the car, the Chiron has those four mechanisms split front/back

is the spare tyre at the back going to be used for steering?

Well, if not from stock, that’s a great HOG mod.

In which direction is the engine mounted in the real car? Lengthwise or widthwise?

One thing that bothered me about the mack engine is the uneven cylinder timing. I have a prototype fake engine on the shelf in mack style which has a half stud between cylinders and has a proper timing, with 2 cylinders popping up every 120° rotation of the shaft. I doubt we're going to see something like that though.
