Apology accepted, captain needa. :vader:

I assume the mando set will be a normal system scale set.

This is legitimately supported by the last wave, especially if you factor in figures and iconicity. Some examples: Grievous starfighter has good size and detail, but a horrendous price. AAT has great figures and is accurately sized, but some details are off and it's pretty expensive. The only set that seems to be pretty good on detail, size and price is the galaxy's edge set, due to how few people know what it is.

I agree on both here. People tend to forget that these are meant for kids. It shouldn't set you back $170 to get a TIE and x-wing, like it did this january. The cheaper prices allow more kids to get the sets, which drives up lego's sales. I assume they've done some calculations, or at least figure that the cheaper price will translate into more sales.

I doubt it, these leakers have been accurate so far.

As someone who got the razor crest, I'd go for it even if there's other ways to get baby yoda. This is one set where, at least in my opinion, the build really shines, which is somewhat ironic as that's where most sets should shine but it's somewhat rare nowadays. It's large, detailed, has tons of interior space, and a good price. It also begs to be modded, which some people may not like but I enjoy tinkering with sets like this.

Yeah, I do like the RC. I was unsure after early reviews but seems like a solid honest set worth the money. I am just not that huge a fan of the series as many seem to be - I don't think it's the messiah of the new Star Wars. And I already know that the mods I want to make (colour swap to DBG, add ladder to cockpit, more texture on outside, better use of escape pod space) will involve a bit of parts digging on bricklink which adds to the expense: so if I am to build one I am better off building the base model from my own collection of parts. The only part which is irreplacable is the cockpit - a cool 25 GBP at time of writing.

If it included Beskar Mando, I'd have bought it by now. I already have the previous one from AT ST. That being said, I like to think there's more to the inclusion of the 'old' Mando than savvy marketing - maybe kids who buy the RC will want to create their own adventures for Mando that aren't specifically tied to that era with The Child so the raggedy, beat-up version makes sense. Just a little bit more imaginative play value.

I’m very curious to see how they do the Imperial Shuttle at $80. Might pick it up if it’s decent and has good minifigs. Is this wave disappointing? Definitely so when it comes in regards to set selection. But there are some positives. With smaller waves, it becomes so much easier to collect and with lower prices, it’s going to be even better. I’ve always believed that Lego put too much details in the system scale sets, in the builds and minifigs alike, so I’m glad to see more of a difference between system and UCS sets. These aren’t black series, screen accurate props it’s Lego and that form is what makes it fun. That’s what I liked about the 2006 style sets so I’m glad the old way of thinking is back.

How? By releasing something akin to 7264 Imperial Inspection but with up-do-date parts and a touch more greebling. I'm looking forward to seeing how this new one turns out but I'm not holding my breath.

Well I don't know what to say about the 2021 rumour, except Im used to be dissapointed by lego, and as relative good as the summer and fall 2020 was, one should not be used to expect satisfaction by legos production choice.

Like some other people say here, I try to console myself that I instead can save some money and buy some loose parts on BL instead.

Piece counts have been updated. Besides the unknown mf and ucs, everything else is known, the 4+ set is 90 pieces. The shuttle is 589 pieces meaning we should have an interior which is important for kids to play. Im actually very excited to see what the builds look like and what the mando and third mf are. I also am curios as to what the 3 tie figures are, maybe it could be mando themed or something generic too.

Kids like xwings and TIEs and their bounty hunters and sith alot more than you think. I think if presented a choice though, the kid would go for a clone wars set but they'd have tough luck since the adults wouldve already nabbed the shelves clean.

Is this new TIE fighter the rumored Moff Gideon TIE, or are they two separate sets?

The rumoured Gideon's TIE was definitely a fake rumour - they mentioned that it was a $70 set, while the one we're getting is $40.

I’m mixed about the 2021 rumours. There is the argument that Lego sets could keep getting more detailed and there has to be a limit placed on detail so prices don’t keep going up and becoming completely unaffordable for not only children, but even AFOLS at some point. Now some might say that the prices for such sets as Ties and X-Wings had already become ridiculous and there prices needed to be scaled back slightly and if Lego has achieved this and kept a reasonable level of detail then this is a good move. And if the models still represent the source material well enough, then the average customer will probably be totally satisfied by both the looks of the models and the price. Of course, if Lego continues with this plan there is no guarantee that the Price Per Piece count for these models will stay reasonable even if the models are smaller, but for now they look pretty good apart from the Imperial Shuttle, but as we don’t know the minfigure count I won’t pass judgement yet.

The problem I think will come mainly for us AFOLS. A lot of people have said many times when sets, especially Ties and X-Wings, that the prices are getting ridiculous and for some models they would be prepared to sacrifice some detail for lower prices. But the trouble is, in the past few years models have been as detailed as they have ever been, so I think it will still be an initial shock to the system to see such iconic vehicles suddenly ‘downscaled’ so to speak, especially when we have seen so many X-Wings in the past few years you can hardly fail to compare them.

Then there’s the fact that, whilst I know there are a lot of people who like the Sequel trilogy and even those who don’t have still appreciated some of the models from that saga in the last few years, I think a lot of people were glad that the films had come to an end for now so Lego could return to paying some decent attention to the original and prequel trilogy. I know that I for one look at 2012-2014 as a ‘golden era’ for Star Wars sets and as someone who came out of their dark age in 2015 and missed a lot of these I was very much looking forward to Lego reapplying that quality of builds and figures to the OT, and especially the PT, again. But instead, Mos Eisley Cantina aside, and just looking at the main wave, on paper we have the end of the sequel sets yes, but then no prequel sets and a rather dull and downgraded handful of OT system sets.

So for me, it feels like in the last six years, we have a Lego Star Wars golden era, then the Sequel trilogy era came along and whether it’s because of the source material or the fact that prices have gone a bit wild or, most probably, a combination of both, the theme seems to have started to struggle a little bit, prompting Lego to change their set strategy and effectively ‘reboot’ the theme with lower prices and classic iconic vehicles to try and recapture the market. A understandable, but rather disappointing move for most AFOLs I think.

So overall if the models are decent enough, I think the wave could be a good move for the casual consumer and AFOLs’ wallets, but a disappointment to many AFOLs’ hearts.

My 8 year old nephew will go for OT because his dad won't let him watch the prequels. He's one of *those* Star Wars fans.

The Clone Wars hasn't been a living entity on a network since 2012 or 13. Kids who were kids back then are now in their late teens. Current kids who are into Clone Wars are probably either getting it on DVD, from parents who like the OT (PT if you had 'em young) or getting it on Disney+ where there is Star Wars of every era at the flick of a button. Hopefully the era-fixation dies out in a generation or so and Star wars becomes just "Star Wars".

Means we have to live with TLJ and TROS but every silver lining has a cloud.

Now I, as a PT child, have my own trilogy to hate. History really does repeat.

My kids (10 and 12) thought the sequels were 'stupid'. That has impacted their whole idea of star wars. They simply have no interest in those toys, and as a result, no interest in any of the star wars movies. It's pretty sad for me- they just don't feel the magic. For them, I am mostly getting Batman and City sets. So in the 2021 wave, the Gunship is the only possible buy for me.

Yeah the builds sound disappointing to me but we expected that based on the info from @jdubbs. What I buy looks like it will largely depend on minifigs, and since the sets are downgraded and cheaper, collecting them for the figures will be easier, so that works for me. Keep in mind this is only the 1HY list. I expect some bigger sets in 2HY

Oh no what a shame. I'll never forget my mum introducing me to SW as a 9 year old and just getting sucked in immediately. There would be such a big gap in my life without SW it's sad that some kids now may have been put off so drastically. :sceptic:

That is a tragedy. Out of academic interest, how did they feel about TFA before going into the others?

I remember well the general enthusiasm and goodwill after TFA and Rogue One, and how badly my own expectations were dashed by what followed. I can easily imagine a "new" fan without the nostalgia factor being alienated by TLJ and definitely by TROS.

Seems good that Lego aren't releasing any worthwhile sets next year. Aside from the UCS there won't be anything worth getting. Have X-Wings and the like gotten more detailed or has Lego just decided to almost double the price in about 8 years? Every time they released a new X-Wing, another 10 had been added to the price.

I would imagine that Disney probably have tight rules around their era of films, essentially they're disposable merchandising wise and once the film has come and gone they don't tend to go back and revisit unlike PT or OT.

Whilst the PT is dreadful, the worst films going (except TROS) the production values are top-notch and lots of original vehicles. I would love to see a UCS Royal Starship, Lego haven't even done a Padme Theed Battle figure throughout their 21 year history!

The ST just consists of OT vehicles in different colours.

I agree with a lot of @BacktoBricks 's points.

But, I actually hope the new style of vehicles won't be as big as the old ones, though I guess it has been confirmed that they are. I would much prefer the sets to be smaller and just as detailed as in years prior, otherwise the new sets would feel out of place. Especially when considering the fact that the regular smaller sets (about €/$30) like the new Mando one will probably have the same level of detailing as before. Sets that look like the aforementioned BoCC Slave I would be fantastic (though maybe that's a bit too small, but you get what I mean).

Generally the single-person starfighters are too big anyway, and I don't see why they would only simplify the wings of the X-wing when the nose could be a bit shorter (though according to rumors it at least has a new nose build).

I don’t keep up with every comment so my apologies if this has been mentioned before, but it looks like the Jawa in the new Cantina set has the old hood. Kenobi still has the new hood though, which means LEGO are going to be using both pieces simultaneously. I wonder how they will decide which hood each character will get.

I still have my "I was one of the first 100 people to see star wars!" (in London, Ontario) pin from 1977. For me it was total magic. I am so angry at Disney for how they dealt with the sequels and the whole idea of focusing on an actual story. Oh well, I guess that's just how the entertainment business works now. All show, no substance.

TFA was the first one I took them too. While I was pretty disappointed in how it turned into a second rate tribute film, they liked it OK. But just OK. They thought TLJ was stupid and had no interest at all in even going to the last one (and I am very glad they didn't see it- I wish I could unee it) My dreams of showing them all the originals kind of evaporated. Maybe when they are a bit older I'll try again.

But I can understand why lego is focused on the OT- there is really nothing (I think) iconic from the sequels that will survive.

I am glad the new X-Wing and TIE are rumored to be a lower price.  Hopefully they are more in scale with the original Lego versions with modern build quality.  The Solo TIE being the same size as the First Order TIE is just wrong.  The First order TIE is bigger than an Imperial TIE.  The original Lego TIE was the perfect size.  Brought up to modern design standards I can easily see the new ships being similar size to their original counterparts at the rumored price points.  Ironically that would make both fit the scale of the Rogue One Y-Wing better too.  Why the (supposed to be) larger fighter was the smaller set in the first place is beyond me.  The lack of a consistent sizing for one man fighters is annoying at system scale and downright loathsome at UCS "scale".  Why can't they pick a scale for one man fighters and build all the sets of one man fighters to that scale.  No no, instead they will set the price point first then build the ship to fit that price point.

Maybe we will finally get an X-Wing that is gray again too.  Will the designers please watch Empire Strikes Back.  X-Wings and Snowspeeders are not white.  I remember the original mosaic sets introduced a third gray that was very light making the current gray "medium".  My first thought back then was I can't wait for an Imperial Shuttle in that color.  Sadly they never put that color (or the modern blueish equivalent) into wider production so we are stuck with "medium" light gray.  It is slightly too dark but still way closer to screen accurate for most OT Star Wars ships than white.  I dream of a day when I can get a Tantive IV that is not made of snow.

Adults grossly underestimate kids, they do in fact notice these things.

while there're no battlepacks, clone wars sets, and everything is a recent remake besides the mandalorian set, this is the first time lego is committing to reversing the trend of inflating their prices. If the x-wing and tie keep to a similar size and comparable level of detail to their predecessors I think this wave will be a home run for their core audience.

Same here. Lack of battle packs is disappointing, but if this new style of cheaper sets is done well and takes off, it'd be great for this theme.

Your experience is very different from both mine, that of everyone else I know, and what lego's sales must show. Most 6-12 year olds, at least from the aforementioned experiences, don't discriminate too much between trilogies, and the biggest influence on what specific thing they want is either "cool" figures (boba fett, sith, clones, and stormtrooper variants come to mind), or recent media, like if rogue one is just coming out in theatres they'll be more likely to buy the sets for the new film.

Agreed. As some one who was 9 when this theme started, and 12 when AotC came out i was definitely into whatever looked cool from any episode back then. The 2002 Gunship was all I wanted until I saw the 2003 AT-AT, the only similarity there was they were both massive and cool looking.

Part of the problem is that basically every vehicle was a re-hash of the OT.  The Falcon was the same (obviously), X-Wings and TIEs were the same, AT-ATs and Star Destroyers were more or less the same (so if they keep making them they'd just make the OT versions), Kylo Ren's shuttle, those weird Crait ski speeder things and the bombers from TLJ are the only new vehicles that pop into my head immediately that actually had significant screen time, and of those, Ren's ship was basically the only one that I could see actually being continued in the future.

I agree.  When I was younger, all that I wanted was Boba Fett or Darth Maul or Darth Vader, I didn't care what was from which trilogy or whatever, I just wanted the 'cool' characters.  Honestly with the absolute youngest generation of fans, I don't really even know how much Clone Wars or prequels resonates with them, I feel like most of them tend to gravitate towards BB-8 or Kylo Ren or Porgs or whatnot.  It's only really the 13-15 year olds and up that could still be considered the "prequel" generation.  But you I said, I don't think kids are giving much through to "I don't like these movies, so I don't want these sets", rather, they just want fun stuff to fly around.  I am really very anxious to see what the TIE and X-Wing look like especially, somehow despite me amassing probably close to a hundred different Star Wars ships/models, I don't have a single minifig scale X-Wing or TIE.  Hopefully this breaks that streak!

After reading some more opinions, I myself have mellowed somewhat in regard to this wave. While my perception of LSW for the foreseeable future will ultimately be linked to the 2HY 2021 selection, I can see the upsides of attempting to 'reboot' the theme in this way. The best way they could hope to achieve this is not just reducing the cost of desirable iconic starfighters, but to also release £10 sets, which would be best with 2 battle packs and a 1-figure set with some kind of scenery.

While I am interested to see what comes of these sets, I agree with the earlier point regarding the changes to the sets under Disney, that the sets do just seem to be marketing material next to new film releases. We haven't seen any more Solo or Rogue One sets since the films came out. This just seems plain wrong when you consider that the OT is 40 years old and they are still churning out remake after remake (while even passing over great vehicles and scenes from the OT itself). It just seems like Lego and/or Disney are very risk averse, which, as I have previously pointed out, does not seem to line up with the kind of profitability they have seen from the SW line, both in 1HY 2020 and in years gone by. As was said by BacktoBricks:

and I echo this sentiment. If you can't remember those years, just look at the Brickset pages for those years in SW. Your mind will be blown when you consider those offerings next to what we will be getting come 2021 (and no, this is not a case of looking back with rose-tinted glasses, it really was that good, at least for me it was).

I also think its good that star wars is finally being put on a cool down period, we need waves like 2012-2016 to return (2013s wave was ridiculously good). Right now, it looks like Harry Potter could be the new star wars for a few years and thats totally fine, star wars needs to have a few experimental waves especially as we weren't even getting the higher detail for higher price anymore (looking at you sith TIE and this entire summer wave). It is disappointing that we aren't getting the diorama or smaller sets and battlepacks anymore as those were peak affordable sets that catered to the display and play audience alike.

Posted

I don’t think that scaling down ships is that bad. We are used to it. Normally, the larger the models, the more they are scaled down. Look for instance at the Falcon, or even the Ghost. They still look good close to an X-wing or a TIE. However, those larger models might look even better if X-wings and TIEs would be slightly smaller. I read several comments about which Snowspeeder is best to display with the AT-AT, and most suggested the 4+ (which is very small and lacks of details). On the other hand, I really dislike models which are scaled up (e.g. 501st AT-RT and BARC Speeder), no matter the level of detail.

Posted

Will be interesting to see how it pans out, wonder if the X-Wing could be an ESB one say from Yoda's hut?  The Tie, well they're always around, 3 minifigs is interesting though, usually a Pilot, droid and Imp Officer; wonder if they go with the same 3?

Battle packs will be sorely missed.  Although who knows what mid year will be like, without much content out there at the moment and current events perhaps the timing was right for a refresh/pause on ideas?
