Hi, I am trying to post this question to Lego Historian if possible.

I've been reading a similar thread about similar Lego sets getting different boxes in different regions..... but my question is a little different.

I recently came across sets with the same product number and same name, but the sets are a bit different (colours, stickers etc).

For example, I am a vintage castle fan and I'm currently looking at Lego Castle set 6080, and the common set I see is this one on the left in this picture...However, when I was looking for this product, I also discovered one from France with the same product code (6080) but different colours and markings (the castle on the right). My guess is that this was simply a way to appeal to the French market??? But if so, why not  a different product code?

Sorry for small pic, but you can't upload much.... links to sets on ebay below....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LEGO-Vintage-Kings-Castle-6080/223485321258?epid=1140295689&hash=item3408c3602a:g:bYcAAOSwO~Zcj2do

Just wondering you knew about this at all and is this common?

Cheers,

Joel

Both of those don't look 100% complete or built like the original, the blue castle using cone pieces in the front gate and missing some the round 1x1 near the back towers, and uses more cones at the back as well.

The yellow/red castle uses a different window on the topright front.

Maybe they were obtained from old collections or bulk lots and trying to resell them as a "set" is more likely to get sold or have more value.

A few years ago, there were two versions of the same Marvel set after a structural weakness was discovered in the original design. Both versions have the same set number. If memory serves, it was a giant bug (pun completely intended!) in an Ant-Man set.

@ TeriXeri,

I agree the sets look incomplete but I'm not trying to buy either of them, I have one.... What I was trying to figure out is why is there a Blue Castle... I've never seen that one.

The Castle I remember and had as a child was the yellow/red one, I've got it again now and that is the one you see listed on Bricklink as the normal set. So I was just wondering where the blue one is from, was it a different model in France etc

And you have not considered that someone on ebay has just changed the colour of the flags in the set they are selling?

There is no box, no instructions pictured.  I don't see how it's anything but a modifcation made by the seller?

There also were the Star Wars Episode III sets with the light up figures and then later released with normal ones.

I think this is the correct answer here. The description could be "We haven't got the complete set, but we'll build what we can and claim it is an older set that people might search for, rather than just a job lot of old castle parts."

Yes, I have encountered this before.

M:Tron Particle Ionizer, Item No: 6923-1

At some point during the sale of this M:Tron spaceship (a 1990 release), Lego changed the construction of the rotating sensor assembly at the top of the spaceship, and I believe that the build for the ship's cargo crane also changed as well.  I only realized this when I was rebuilding my copy of the set using instructions archived on a website, and some of the steps seemed different than what I'd remembered.  After some additional searching, I discovered that there were 2 editions of the set with slightly different instructions! It is rare, but it has happened.

Sorry to take so long to answer... but I have to agree with Paul on this one.  Once a set is opened (seals broken), there is no guarantee that any set is original.

I had this (and several other Castle sets) in the 1980s, and I see a lot of replacements in both sets.  First of all the drawbridge strings in the sets of that era were thin and black.  The French version of the 6080 has just white thick string.... not something that I never remember TLG using for their castle sets... so that was the first red flag that there were replacement parts in the French 6080.  And that white string is likely not even LEGO... just a generic piece of string.  And the Austrian 6080 even mentions that some parts were missing and replaced.  But replaced with what?

I would never assume that an opened Ebay set (or even Bricklink set) to be 100% original.  At least the Austrian 6080 owner acknowledged that there were replacement parts.

Many of the three digit numbers were reused.

The key word here is "Many"... and that is the truth...

The 725 set number was a USA/Canada Town Plan set of 1961-65, a 12V Freight Train set of the mid 1970s, and a Basic Set of 1990...

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?q=725&itemBrand=1000&catType=S&catID=&itemYear=

There are many examples of 3 digit set numbers reused 2 or 3 times.

Then there are some sets that have the same number used at the same time, but in different parts of the world.  The 346 Samsonite USA Jumbo Jet set was used at the same time as the 346 EU/Australia House set...
