You can typically drive 4 or 5 M-motors or 2 or 3 XL-motors if you use fresh batteries. That is under normal load. However, under very heavy loads or driving the motor to stall, then often just one motor. I think the maximum load is 800 mA but the battery boxes have an overload protection. You can remove this if you want ... see here

I have a feeling your asking if you need two battery boxes to power your train with two motors? The answer is one box for both motors ... Depending on speed and load will determine how long your run time is.
