Same here. But I think they did it to get a slightly better response as they used an input of a 2L liftarm activating the steering of the 3L (building step 21 on the video at 0:47). You can easily change this, e.g. use this part as the lever. You will although get a more direct and "harder" steering I think.

The steering has no possibility to be improved that way, look at the video at 1:00. There is no range of  movement on the axles, there is neither half stud of free space!
