To me it seems like a 'testing the waters' kind of set. I feel like if this sells well (which I'm pretty confident it will), they'll be open to more Zelda sets.
Having said that I don't really expect a full wave of Zelda sets either for now.

Oh, absolutely, but a 200+ price tag is gonna leave the waters pretty cold for most people, unlike the much more affordable Tallneck and Sonic Ideas set.

Then again, they keep churning out those weird, huge Nintendo sets. So those must be selling well enough for their standards to make new ones.

Here's hoping they don't shoot themselves in the foot with a potentially golden bullet.

I dunno, it very well may be intended to see how much interest there is from the general market, but that also just seems unnecessary for Zelda. We have very tangible evidence that there's some demand for it, and Zelda is among the most popular and iconic video game franchises in the world. The set itself does give the vibe of having been made in isolation, but as a potential theme Zelda seems like too much of a cash cow for Lego to pass up on (especially if they're willing to make five Sonic sets). I guess at this point we can't really do much else other than wait and see though.

Have any leakers said when it's supposed to come out? I know a few sets from the leak have release dates/windows now but I don't think I've seen any about the Zelda set.

That's what I'm afraid of as well. I see the casual Zelda fan picking up a Zelda set akin to the tallneck - say for example a Guardian set - much quicker than a +$200 investment.

I agree with this. You need only to look at the amount of Lego Ideas submissions to see the populairity and demand of anything from the franchise.

Other sets have release windows? I think we can only speculate for now based on the set seeming a bit further along the production phase than some of the other leaked sets. (new molds used, the set looking actually producable etc). If they time it right, a summer release would be perfect to coincide with Tears of the Kingdom.

Yeah, supposedly the Rivendell set is out March 1st, and the UCS Jabba's Sail Barge is for this fall. I think those are the only two that we know about right now, so it might be too early to hear about the Deku Tree (also not sure if Rivendell was part of the same leak or not).

Hmmm I see. At the same time I'm a bit worried. Wouldn't the more "reliable" leakers be able to confirm sets from this spring / summer by now? I mean they're already confirming sets for this fall?

The design changes a bit from game to game, but the only games where it canonically appears and is different enough that a new mold would be "needed" are Wind Waker and A Link to the Past (the latter of which sadly seems unlikely to get any sets unless the theme lasts a while). If they make one for this set it could be used as necessary in any sets based on Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, A Link Between Worlds, and Breath of the Wild.

Spoiler

Well it's gonna look pretty different in Tears of the Kingdom which will soon be the most relevant Zelda game.

Not really a spoiler cause it's from an official trailer but I've used the brackets just in case there's anyone who wants to not see it.

Talking about official trailers from Nintendo, we are due a Nintendo direct soon which should have a TotK focus, maybe they'll reveal this set there?, I suppose that depends on when it's due to release of course, but it looks like one of the more finished of the jeangreyforever survey leaks and releasing the set around may when TotK comes out would be a logical move to capitalise on Zelda being thrust to the forefront of the pop-culture zeitgeist.

I don't think we'll get TotK stuff for a little bit, but I guess it's possible. I think BotW centric sets make the most sense because they are still sort of adjacent to TotK while also representing the most popular game in the series.

That's a good point about the Direct but I don't know if they'd do it. The only time I can remember merch being a Nintendo Direct was that Mario Direct back in 2020, and I guess technically the most recent one if the Pikmin T-shirt counts.

The Rivendell set has a new mold that would be perfect for this, too!

The fern leaves in the Rivendell set also seem like pieces that could be used nicely in a Deku Tree set.

I have to say, that Deku Tree is quite a bit more than I was hoping for. I was pretty sure that Nintendo, at least, would want the sole focus on TotK as the upcoming/current/most recent game, given their poor recent track record with supporting older titles. As a set to represent LoZ, I think it's a pretty good choice--OoT has been the signature game of the franchise pretty much since it came out, until BotW muscled its way onto the stage and started sharing the spotlight. You can consider those two games the tentpoles of LoZ as far as most of the fandom is concerned, and what's one major iconic thing they have in common? The Great Deku Tree!

That said, I would sincerely hope that it's not the only thing we get. This franchise is so huge, with so many memorable visuals and setpieces, that it practically demands more attention.

Probably not in the direct then, considering that it's tomorrow and TLG only just revealed the Rivendell set today.

Maybe if there's a dedicated Zelda direct at some point before the TotK release?

I still really hope it's revealed in todays direct! And I genuinely also hope it's released this year. I mean, looking at the game releasing this year, what reason would they have to release it any later than May / June?

That might make more sense. Nintendo doesn't usually spend much time on any one game in their Directs these days, not even big ones like Zelda and Mario. They still need to get the marketing for TotK going so a Direct with more specific details at a later date could happen, and that'd be a spot where there would be time to reveal merchandise too, like the Lego set.

Fingers crossed anyway! (I feel silly for being this desperate, but that's life when two things you're a fan of are finally coming together.)

Rivendell was not part of the same leak. And not sure the Sail Barge has really been confirmed for this year. While it would be great to see the Deku Tree this year, I wouldn't necessarily expect it...

Well they DO spend every direct talking for 7-10 minutes about a random, non Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest/IP people care about Square Enix JRPG coming out.

You're right, however. As much as I would love this and I think it would be a good idea considering rumors that Nintendo may not have an especially big lineup this year, they don't really talk about merchandising / tie in stuff other than the announcement of the Mario movie cast. They don't even really talk about new hardware or accessories that much; general directs are very heavily focused on software within the upcoming year.

Directs are pretty much entirely designed to market games specifically, so that's why they're mostly just software trailers. Publishers pay for the spots, so aside from first party stuff whatever shows up is there in large part because the game's publisher had money to spend on advertisements.

Back to the specific topic of the Zelda set, the (frustrating) lack of information about TotK in the new Direct does have me somewhat hopeful that we may get a dedicated Zelda Direct, wherein we might see the set too.

I agree I believe they'll do that too. I also pondered if maybe they'll have this direct at the end of April, reveal gameplay of the game (which around that time would be less than a month away) and reveal the Deku tree set for June 1st (which would be closer to that release date as well).

Now that we know from yesterday's trailer that TotK has vehicles in it, clearly Lego's interest in making a zelda theme has shot up 500% since they can fill it with vehicles.

But seriously, I do feel that a set like this (https://brickset.com/sets/80030-1/Monkie-Kid-s-Staff-Creations) for this game would be a fun way of interpreting what the mechanic seems to be.

Also, for everyone that was expecting the Deku tree yesterday, has Nintendo ever shown off a piece of merch in a direct? Or even revealed some on the same day? All the mario set reveals have happened independently of any Nintendo news as far as I remember, and I don't really see that changing now.

I also get why we could expect to see the set relatively soon (good timing + one of the most finalized sets from that leak) but it seems to me to be overly optimistic to expect that. Eh, Who knows.

Ohh that's a very good point. The new game seems to encourage building and creating in-game, like the cart and hovercraft. I'd love to see if Lego will acknowledge this.
Also, the new golem-like creatures, the geometric ones, are right up Lego's alley, come on.

Seems like a misstep not to release the Great Deku Tree to coincide with TotK in May. Would’ve worked out quite nicely given that the last game-related display set (Tallneck) was released last May too. But I suppose it’s too early to speculate.

Imagine a whole wave of BotW / TotK sets though.. I’m not particularly a fan of how popular new themes get assigned large D2Cs more than smaller sets, but I’d absolutely buy a D2C Divine Beast with full interior. The Rivendell set shows how adept Lego has got at replicating complex structures and patterns, which can absolutely apply to what we see with Sheikah technology and structures from the games.

There is that. It makes me wonder whether the Deku Tree is intended as the one concession to long-term fans, while everything else produced under the license will be directly TotK-related. Which would...not be ideal, tbh. At the very least, we deserve a little $15-20 brick-built King of Red Lions, don't we? We deserve some sort of dungeon set with puzzle play features! We deserve Wolf Link with a little saddle that a Midna minifig can slot into! And so on.

Posted

And they could re-purpose that for the blue boko's and boko leaders (the big ones from the trailer). Man I'd love to see Ganon in minifigure form as well, since he's pretty tall I wonder how they'd tackle him.

I love the idea of a "build your own vehicle" set for TotK, Lego would be foolish not to do it assuming they make sets based on it. There was a lot of cool stuff in the new trailer I'd love to see adapted into Lego form, but I'm not sure how worth that is discussing right now since we don't even know if Zelda is going to be a full theme or not.
