I love the idea of a "build your own vehicle" set for TotK, Lego would be foolish not to do it assuming they make sets based on it. There was a lot of cool stuff in the new trailer I'd love to see adapted into Lego form, but I'm not sure how worth that is discussing right now since we don't even know if Zelda is going to be a full theme or not.

You never know, there was a quadcopter is the latest trailer and Lego never passes up the opportunity to shoehorn in a quadcopter or two.

In all seriousness, lego can put out whatever sets they want and they’ll sell as long as they have the Zelda logo on them. Personally I far prefer the older Zeldas, but getting any Zelda at all is a stepping stone to getting the sets based on the classics that I think a lot of us want.

It's gonna be really rough if the Deku tree doesn't release this year. What a tease that would be for a franchise that's already been teased to death.

I'm with you. I prefer the fairytale/classic heroic fantasy vibe of the older LoZ games, and lately I feel like the franchise has been getting a little too "worldbuilt" for its own good, as well as ditching fairy tales for serious mythology and letting more and more sci-fi elements edge out the pure and simple fantasy. But at the same time, I will certainly take what I can get, and even if we wind up with a wave of TotK vehicle-focused sets, we may be certain that there will also be bands of monsters and their funky stone-and-plank lairs for Link to fight.

(And in the meantime, YouTuber octane thermoplastic has designed some terrific LoZ models and sets for which he has promised to put the instructions on Rebrickable during the first half of this year. Am I allowed to mention that?)

I'm still feeling confident it'll be out sooner rather than later. It doesn't look anywhere near as incomplete as most of the other survey leaks, and it makes a lot of sense for it to release the same year as a new mainline game (something which only happens every 5~ years nowadays). I wouldn't be surprised if it's not out until later, maybe this fall, but I can't see it missing 2023.

How do people plan on displaying the Deku tree?

It's a 2 in 1 so are people gonna go with the BotW or OoT look?

Personally I'll go with the BotW build and I'll moc a little battle stage of some sort and have the OoT Lunk fighting Sonic as a little Smash bros display.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the BotW build, though better pictures could change that. I like OoT slightly more as a game but I love both and in-game the BotW design has more going on. Not sure what I'll do with OoT Link but I'll think of something.

Oof, that is the question, isn't it? I love both games and the interaction with the Great Deku Tree in both. If I can justify it, I might just have to get two so I can display both at once!

Same. They look so different, I just feel compelled to get two :laugh_hard: But it‘s pretty hilarious how much more lively the BotW one looks. The OoT version is a bit barren

If I'm not buying 2 I will probably simply display the OoT build. It's a lot more memorable to me and I prefer the face. Plus I'm not too big of a fan of the roots on BoTW and him standing so far above the ground makes it all look a bit messy, too busy idk. I'm also very curious how the mouth will work on OoT.

I wonder if you'd use the parts required for Hestu and the other included koroks for the OoT if not then you could have them with BotW Link and Zelda in a little scene separate from the OoT Deku tree.

I wonder if we can easily modify it into the Wind Waker deku tree. It can't be too hard right?

I think I'd display it with Botw's version as well. But I'd probably also bricklink several more Links for dioramas with a guardian, Lynel etc.
Most of all I'm curious how they'll design Link. The new hair sculpt, the face print... Really makes me anxious but I feel like Lego can make it work, they've been spot on with hairsculpts these past years.

I mean because it's comparatively one of the smaller ones from the leak you can make out a few details.

I mean if you want to do lots of BotW scenes then if you got a second to build OoT then you'd have extra BotW figures and maybe Koroks, though you could try and make some of the other outfits from the game? And just use the head?

If we do get other BotW/TotK sets let's get a Vai disguise link ( and if we are getting other Zelda sets then midna, marin and twilight Princess gannondorf plz)

I'm optimistic, after all it'd made sense to come out close to the TotK release, and it was one of the most finished looking ones from the leak, and there are a few from the leak that she know are this year ( sail barge said to autumn 2023 by promobricks, Disney stuff is assumably for Disney 100 this year, Gotham skyline might tye into the mask of the phantasm 30 years ( though Lego doesn't really plan around anniversarys), Rivendell is a bit different because we already knew about it and it wasn't in the survey but it's coming in march)

What a difference three or four video game console generations makes, huh?

Ganondorf is an absolute must, at least then we have the three triforce holders. I also would like Zelda in one of her more standard pinkish dresses and Ganon. 2 versions for each of the holders. After that I'm glad with pretty much everything.

Zooming in on the leaked images and noting some details.

OoT build

- is that a Deku sprout at the far left?

- on the right it looks like the new fern from Rivendell in dark green

Looks like the mouth can open

BotW build

-At least 3 Koroks ( with 3 unique leaf faces) + hestu

- blue flowers around the sword shrine to represent silent princesses

- cooking pot under the Deku tree/ in its naval. ( Hopefully some of the other stuff from the naval is included behind the roots.

-new fern part in dark green next to hestu

- the leaf part in flesh / light nougat.

Minifigs

I though OoT link might be using Peter pans hat/hair but no, it's new.

Navi print on the clear minifig head on a pole.

BotW Link and Zelda both have dual moulded arms, Zelda looks to have a white torso with blue printing ( a blue torso with white printing would've been better but oh well), link also appears to have dual moulded legs?

2 new printed shields (

Less sure of this but I think the swords might be new parts and are those dual moulded midlegs on OoT link?

It's nice that the 2 different builds give us 2 slightly different angles on the figs.

Oooh good catches!! The fern pieces being included gives a lot of confidence to the set. Since it's a new piece I'd imagine Lego wants to include it in many sets this year.

On the OoT image it really looks like BOTW Link is holding the Master Sword? I didn't notice both shields at first, awesome.
Botw Link having dual molded legs would be amazing, I really hope they're regular legs and not mid-legs, those really wouldn't look right on Link and Zelda (BOTW).

Everyone is talking about BOTW and OoT's Great Deku tree and I'm over here thinking about Windwaker's version! (My whole family played that a crap-ton growing up...)

I’m sure someone on rebrickable will have your back when this set comes out!

My guess is that the Wind Waker version wasn't included as an option since it's quite different from the others. The face is much more human-like and the trunk is fairly different too, so it would've taken a lot more pieces to do him justice.

You noticed some details I hadn't caught yet, so thanks for that. Very hard with such a small/blurry image. I hadn't looked at the images again after Rivendell was revealed, but this Zelda set definitely has the new fern leaves. That, combined with all of the other new, finished molds and prints (with nothing that looks like a placeholder) leads me to believe this set is also coming out this year. Fingers crossed!

A few observations:

  • The blue blobs by the Ocarina of Time Deku Tree have to be Deku Babas, as they were present in that location.
  • To my eyes, it looks like Child Link from OoT has a green skirt piece of some kind rather than green dual-molded legs? If so, maybe the legs underneath will be dual-molded, but the green section on his legs looks like it flares out a bit.
  • Child Link also has the distinct middle-bang part for his hair/cap piece. Since Child and Adult link have the same hairstyle in Ocarina, that new mold can easily be used to give us Ocarina sets for the entire game (and potentially recolored for the different adult tunics).
  • But I imagine with Nintendo's quality control, they'll require LEGO to make a new hair/hat mold for each variation of Link (assuming more sets will be made). Wind Waker Link especially has a distinct hairstyle, while Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword could maybe get away with using the same one. All of that said, I'm guessing if LEGO ever makes a Wind Waker set, they'll make the King of Red Lions boat before they do that game's version of the Deku Tree.
  • It looks to my eyes like BotW Link has a Master Sword piece. But I can't for the life of me see what his shield looks like with my eyes. Child Link obviously has the Deku Shield, which is nice, but I think he has the sword piece 18034 (Roman sword with thick cross guard).
  • As far as which build to display, I'm with everyone else wanting to budget to buy two and display both. That said, I hope that things like the Koroks, Hestu, and the sword pedestal can be kept built if you choose to build the Ocarina version. Looking at both pictures, I feel like choosing to build either one will leave you with a lot of leftover pieces unique to the other build.

Going to be interesting to see what happens with this and any potential future Zelda sets. They have the opportunity here for a massively ever-green theme, and I have to stop myself from getting too excited at the potential until we hear more official word.

One thing I would hope for is that they don't just design sets to replicate specific scenes and setpieces from individual games, but maybe attempt some more "generic LoZ" sets based on recurring motifs. So many locations, characters, enemy types, and dungeon themes appear across multiple games, and it would be really neat to see a unique LEGO variation on the common themes.

I like that idea. I could see some sort of playable/modular dungeon set that you can remix with blocks that push onto buttons, small keys, a boss key, switches that can change color, etc. That sort of set with some of the smaller enemies that are in most of the games would be a fun way to get a "generic" Zelda set.

However, that approach makes me think of what LEGO did with Super Mario, which has been disappointing by being a little too focused on the 2D/generic Mario games when we could've gotten more interesting (to me) builds based on specific games. I'm just glad to see we might get minifigure Zelda sets and not some digital figure!

There are so many recurring set pieces from the games (like a Deku Tree) that I wonder if they'll keep doing a 2-in-1 approach? For example, a Temple of Time that can be built complete or built as ruins for another OoT/BotW crossover.

Zelda and Mario are very different game franchises and the potential pitfalls for adapting them as LEGO sets are also very different. I don't follow Super Mario all that closely so I don't know what people find lacking about the LEGO version, but the impression I get is that there's a consensus "baseline" for the franchise, and then various installments experiment with levels of distance from that baseline, but the baseline itself doesn't change. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, the Koopalings, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Shyguys, Birdo, Cheep-Cheeps, Bullet Bills, Lakitu, question mark blocks, coins, mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Invincibility Stars, Tanooki Suit...I know there's more and I could continue, but hopefully you get the picture. With Mario, there's a standard, and then there are variations on the standard, with the occasional new character or enemy type getting elevated to status within the standard. So if the LEGO adaptation sticks to the baseline, that's only to be expected, and if someone is disappointed that the unique elements from their favorite Mario game aren't included, that's unfortunate for them but they kind of have to recognize the sets as being "regular" Mario.

Zelda doesn't really have that, I don't think. If there is a consensus baseline among fans, it's probably Ocarina of Time, but as far as Nintendo is concerned, the Zelda standard is whatever main console release is the most current. For 30 years Link wore a green tunic and stocking cap as his iconic outfit, now it's a light blue tunic and no hat (but a cute short ponytail), and that's official. Each new game changes the status quo of the series, in part because of Nintendo's stance but also because the franchise is so much more lore-driven. People get very invested in the lore and mythology and iconography of LoZ, and that means adaptation into any new medium--including LEGO--has to contend with the changes in that lore over time. If they pick one version to be the "official" one, they'll piss off everyone who doesn't consider that game the baseline, and if they try to address all of them, the size of the project can quickly get out of hand.

That's why I think the best way to go would be to take a third option--create new enemy designs and a composite lore that draws on multiple games for inspiration, and make that your baseline for the purposes of the adaptation. For example, instead of designing an Ancient Cistern dungeon set just to satisfy the Skyward Sword fans, you have the water-themed dungeon set include elements taken from the Ancient Cistern, like a whip for Link to use and some zombie Bokoblins, and meanwhile there are also enemies and visuals from the water dungeons in other games.

I...did not mean to let this get so long. I have a lot of Feelings about this.

haha, no worries. I can tell you're passionate, and as someone who's been playing Mario and Zelda games for about 30 years, I get it. Me too.

I totally agree with Mario having more of a "generic" baseline that's consistent, and LEGO made a great choice to start there. I just personally wish we had seen more sets like the Luigi's Mansion ones mixed into the line, too.

For Zelda, I'm just agreeing to disagree :) I would be disappointed if Zelda became a LEGO theme with the bulk of sets in some middle-ground space of trying to be a loose catch-all while not directly adapting any game. I totally would understand why LEGO might take that approach, especially if it becomes a real line and not just for 18+ collectors. And I think you've called out the setbacks with whatever path they choose. But personally, I want sets that adapt iconic scenes from as many of the Zelda games as I can get.

Either way, excited to see what comes of this Deku Tree set.
