Meaf Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 I'd definitely prefer the sets to be more grounded in specific locations/scenes, but I think it could work well either way. It does also depend on how long the series lasts. If it's just two waves (for argument's sake) then I'd be more amenable to less accurate sets if that allowed for more bases to be covered, be those characters, enemies, items, whatever. But if Zelda is here to stay then I think waves each based on a specific game could be fun and last Lego for years. Whatever we end up getting I'm just happy it's happening at all. Quote

I totally would understand why LEGO might take that approach, especially if it becomes a real line and not just for 18+ collectors. And I think you've called out the setbacks with whatever path they choose. But personally, I want sets that adapt iconic scenes from as many of the Zelda games as I can get. Oh, to be sure, there are some individual scenes and setpieces from some individual games that are so absolutely iconic that they would be fools not to address them in an extended line. I don't just want "Link's red boat," I want the King of Red Lions. If they do a Temple of Time set, the exterior architecture should be recognizable as the design presented in OoT and BotW. It was smart of them to design a Deku Tree that could be either/or instead trying to be both at once. But I would definitely want to also see sets that have a certain amount of flexibility built in. The bulk of the LoZ vibe isn't in the few absolutely iconic moments; it's in the widespread stuff like recurring place-names and dungeon puzzles. And for those I don't think it's so vital that they look a certain way, especially considering that they'll have to be stylized just to be converted into LEGO to begin with. Now I'm imagining a very basic customizable "dungeon module" consisting of a stretch of hallway in dark gray bricks with a few side studs, and a switch that raises and lowers a barrier. By including just a handful of alternate pieces, the theme can be changed. Put trans-orange studs on the side studs and build the barrier out of flames, and it's a fire dungeon. Leaf pieces and vines make a forest dungeon. Blue crystals and trans-light blue spikes get you an ice dungeon, and skull-printed tiles and long bones make it the spooky dungeon. Scale this concept up to different sizes of sets and add a variety of enemies (perhaps sold in battle packs or as their own modular mini-sets), and you could recreate the vibe of probably 80% of LoZ dungeons. And I'd rather have that than highly accurate replicas of just a few specific dungeons. Edited February 13, 2023 by Karalora Quote
Karalora Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 As a side note, since I figure this will be appreciated here, the other day I got to wondering how large a complete minifig-scale model of BOTW's Hyrule would be, so I got some numbers and crunched them and it came out to a little over 12 acres. 12 acres of LEGO! A compelling thought, isn't it? Wouldn't that be magnificent to see? You'd have to rig up some kind of gondola ride or ski lift to get a good look at it! Quote

Let’s not forget brick-built Guardians that play those anxiety-inducing piano keys! As much as I love the idea of the Deku Tree set representing two different games, could that also be why the predicted price point is so high? Usually with ‘optional’ elements in a set, they’re quite minor. But in this case the overall model does look significantly different between the two iterations. No doubt that’s padding out the price quite a bit. Also wondering if we’ll get a glider for BotW Link. A little off topic but tangentially related, but I finally beat the Trial of the Sword Beginner Trials on Master Mode. That 10th stage with the Lizalfos is just awful. I really thought that if we just got one BotW set, it would be a Guardian battle scenario, which is easily the signature situation of that game. I have seen some utterly gorgeous MOCs of Guardian Stalkers, so it can clearly be done with existing parts. I can so easily visualize an official set with the Guardian, Link in his Champion's tunic with a few different weapons and a shield (and perhaps a paraglider), a section of ruins with some foliage bits and a treasure chest, and a terrified NPC to rescue. kevkipo Posted February 15, 2023 Posted February 15, 2023 Honestly that is kinda what I hoped for... It would've been affordable as well. But I'll take whatever Zelda minifig based set I can get Quote

A Guardian seems like a shoe-in if we ever get more BotW sets. It's kind of perfect in that it can recreate a very iconic part of the game at a reasonable price point (something that I find other licensed themes often struggle with). Quote
Karalora Posted February 15, 2023 Posted February 15, 2023 As regards the price, I think TLG and Nintendo just want all us whiners to put our money where our mouths are. Quote

Guardians do make sense for BoTW, but I feel like lego rather tackles the franchise as a whole, the guardians might be too specific to one game. I don't really mind, I prefer the Deku Tree. But as long as we get the figures I'm happy. Plus the guardians can technically be moced if necessary (although sets are always preferred.) Quote
Meaf Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 Now that we know Zelda is going to be a thing, I have to wonder what (if any) other Nintendo franchises might also get adapted into Lego. I think the biggest problem for most of them is that they may be a little too niche. Lego doesn't really do licensed themes for non-mainstream IPs, so I don't see us getting stuff like Pikmin, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles, etc. The most best selling series other than Mario and Zelda are mostly Mario spin-offs, but I suppose Animal Crossing and maybe Splatoon are options, though Splatoon's popularity is mostly concentrated in Japan so that may hurt its chances. Pokemon is likely off the table since Nintendo jointly owns the franchise (plus there are/were Lego rip-off Pokemon sets). And of course there's Smash Bros, but that seems impossible with how many third parties are involved now. The only other notable Nintendo series that I think may have a decent chance is Metroid. Despite not actually being that popular (in fact the aforementioned Fire Emblem has sold better for a while now), Metroid has a massive legacy and is hugely influential. Alongside it's past successes as a Lego Ideas candidate, I think there's a chance we might get one eventually, though it'd probably be a one-off. That said, this may just be copium since Metroid is one of my favorite Nintendo series. So yeah, now that I've written all of this out, I'm beginning to think we won't get anything beyond Mario and Zelda. Maybe an Animal Crossing theme in the vein of Friends could find success, and perhaps we could get one-offs based on somewhat more niche themes, but I don't expect we'll see a whole bunch more themes even if Zelda does end up being a huge success. Agent Kallus Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 Mario (including spinoffs like Yoshi, DK, Mario kart, Warioware, Mario and sonic Olympics, captain Toad, Luigi's mansion etc) Zelda and Pokémon are definitely the Nintendo big 3. Next is Smash bros and Animal crossing, then Kirby and Splatoon, then maybe metriod. Quote

HAL (the makers of Kirby) aren't owned by Nintendo, so it's up to them whether Kirby could ever make the jump to Lego. I know it'll never happen, but a Smash Bros (or even just generic Nintendo) CMF makes so much sense. There are a ton of iconic characters that are just a bit too obscure to get their own sets, like Samus, Fox, Ness, Marth, Shulk, and so on. Even if third parties weren't an option, and we exclude characters that couldn't be minifigures, there's at least four or five series right there. Quote
nicknack116 Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 Like Zelda, there have been a few Ideas submissions for Animal Crossing, so they know the interest is there. But I feel like the thematic overlap with sets in LEGO City and Friends lines means we probably wouldn't get more than a one-off. Maybe Metroid or Star Fox could get a one-off, 18+ set at some point. LEGO loves their spaceships, and a set of Samus with her ship on a display stand or Fox with his ship would both be fun. And of course, Pokemon is with Mega Construx now. And as much as I love Splatoon and would love to see LEGO adapt the design of those games, I feel like the appeal of those games just wouldn't translate to LEGO as well as Mario and Zelda can. Besides, I want to see them tap into more of the potential of Mario and Zelda sets before taking on other Nintendo franchises. Quote

I actually did forget that! Or…never knew it? I only remember hearing about Zelda at the time. That is interesting. Personally, the only way I see LEGO licensing Splatoon is if they incorporate the turf war gameplay into the main sets somehow. Probably through some app like Mario? I know it was mentioned by someone earlier, but Pikmin would be adorable sets. They would practically be true-to-life scale, which has got to be rare for LEGO minifigures (besides the LEGO movie/LEGO Batman movie). Quote

I actually had no idea that had happened. I guess it does hit a lot of the Lego checkmarks: action-y, colorful, and based on an already popular franchise that's only going to keep growing. I don't know how interested I'd be personally, but I've played enough Splatoon 3 that I'd probably pick up at least one just to check it out. Quote

It's the Summoner's Cup, which is given to whichever team wins Worlds every year. LoL esports is a massive part of the culture and fanbase of the game and a has a large following (especially in Korea, like the subject of the last ideas set). Considering how much fans spend on esports merch I don't doubt that it would sell well. That being said, I'd much prefer sets based on the setting and characters of the game, like a D2C Arcane set.
