I don't think this necessarily means anything, but apparently datamining the new Fortnite update has revealed that they are probably adding Lego versions of the Dragon Ball skins.

The Lego Korra in Fortnite didn't seem to mean anything, though you never know licensed characters could show up in the fortnote sets?

Yeah I don't anticipate it will lead to anything, although I guess it's not totally impossible? Dragon Ball is weird since it's definitely on the borderline of what Lego would normally consider too adult, but there are other themes that have depicted series with worse stuff. Also it being anime is of course something Lego has not really done before, though I don't really see that being a problem considering Dragon Ball is one of the most popular media franchises in the world.

All that said (and slightly more on topic), it would be really funny if they just threw Goku in the Battle Bus set or something like that. I don't think we're going to see licensed characters show up in the Fortnite sets since that'd just be another cost that doesn't really need to be there, but it would be a good way to get some characters from stuff that is never getting a full theme.

The only "License in a License" sets I can think of are Batman in two of the The Lego Movie sets, The Wicked Witch and flying monkeys in The Ultimate Batmobile, the Dimensions starter pack, and the Wizard of Oz minifigs being put in The Lego Movie Series 2 minifig series. So, it's technically not unheard of, but I highly doubt it would happen with Fortnite (especially it would take new molds/prints away from new Fortnite minifigs)

I'm not big on Dragon Ball, so I might be wrong, but didn't it air on cartoon network in the US or something? I don't remember it being any more adult than, say, more mature Star Wars projects, or Dune, or some of the newer Marvel/DC films.

Yeah that's a proper assessment. The CN dub was heavily edited for gore (people get holes blasted clean through their torso every handful of episodes). I'm only really a big fan of the first few seasons but the worst I remember seeing was someone getting sliced clean in half at the waistline. There's also some suggestive stuff but it's very par-for-the-course with anime.

It's definitely not too adult to at least get a nod to the fortnite skin. I'd actually like to see an official Goku minifig. Those exoforce hair molds were already pretty close, I think they could ace it if it can actually happen.

Too be fair though, at this point it doesn't seem like Fortnite has the same reservations as Lego when it comes to what they make skins of (the best example of this is probably Invincible, which has skins despite being incredibly graphic). Anyway though I do agree with your original point, Dragon Ball is probably not too adult for Lego's standards.

It seems unlikely to me too, but now that I think about it, Fortnite could actually be a nice sort of "replacement" to Lego Dimensions as a way to get minifigures of properties we'd probably never get full sets of.

I also think that is incredibly unlikely. But with sort of logic we could get Avatar the last airbender sets and then have them sneak Korra in Fortnite set ( of course I'd prefer a whole line up of TLoK sets with Team Avatar, the villains and the side characters but I know that unfortunately it's even more unlikely that AtlA sets ( unpopular opinion but as a fan of both shows I actually prefer Korra to Aang, Iroh is always number 1 though)).

So last weekend, I went to the local friendly LEGO Store and happened to be wearing a Legend of Zelda tee-shirt which the employees commented on, so naturally we got to talking about the Deku Tree set and how expensive it is, and one of the employees said she thinks Nintendo charges extra for licenses. Which is a speculation I have also had. I know a frontline hourly employee isn't going to have much more (if any) insight into the nuts and bolts of licensing agreements than I do, but the more of us say it, the more I feel like we're onto something. And it is in character for Nintendo because of how finicky they are with third parties touching their stuff.

I feel like that's got to be part of it, but I'm also not necessarily convinced that it's the main reason? Mario and Animal Crossing both largely seem to be reasonably priced, maybe a little more expensive than average but definitely nowhere near the level of the Deku Tree imo. In fairness though I guess they could just charge more for Zelda for whatever reason, of it this could just be a one-off thing and future sets will be more reasonable (since it kind of isn't fair to compare one D2C against two full themes).

I've thought this was the case for awhile. Mario, Animal Crossing, and the Deku Tree all seem like they're about as expensive as the Disney licenses.

I'm sure license pricing isn't the only reason--the number of unique molds and prints in the set, none of which can really be re-used in other themes, has to be a contributing factor as well--but based on what I know of Nintendo, and knowing how long this has probably been in negotiations, it seems likely that it's a contributing factor.

Posted

I thought the fact that licensed sets have to bundle in licensing fees (which vary license to license) had been common knowledge for a while. It's far from the only factor in licensed set pricing (bespoke molds for licensed subjects that can't be reused in other themes can be another big factor, and of course licensed and unlicensed sets alike can have varying prices based on factors like part size among many others), but it's one of the clearest ones that sets licensed set pricing apart from typical unlicensed sets.

The thrust of my speculation has been that Nintendo, in particular, charges more for its licenses than many other IP-holders. The LEGO Store employee I spoke to had the same idea.

Not sure if others noticed, but in Duckbricks' recent video about the D&D CMF, he shows the Zelda set on display at SDCC. There is a whole section to hold the master sword that isn't shown in any promotional pictures for the set!

The slew of set reveals coming out of SDCC must've influenced my dreams, because last night I dreamed that Lego revealed one of next year's Mario Kart sets as well as a previously unannounced Splatoon theme. Maybe some day...

Not the pedestal in front of the BotW tree?

Yeah, the plinth was featured in the initial pics. However, most of those were from a relatively low front-view angle, and it does look a lot bigger when viewed from a higher angle.

Seen quite a few reviews of the Legend of Zelda set up on YouTube. So excited. I’ve been waiting decades for official LEGO Zelda, so price wasn’t a deterrent.

Since I’ve got it preordered, so I’m trying to avoid spoilers/not watching full reviews. Has anyone seen a breakdown of what the recommended method will be to get the necessary pieces to build both versions of the Deku Tree? Are there a lot of new colors that won’t be easy to source from Bricklink, etc?

If the most cost effective way to build both is to buy 2 sets, that’ll be a bummer.

TLG is present at Gamescom and will conduct a panel today about „LEGO Sparrow“. Sounds like the codename of a new theme to me. Since TLG mostly showcase their videogame-based themes at the con, I assume it‘s a new gaming IP :excited:

(And no, it’s certainly not POTC. How come people still haven‘t realised that codenames have nothing to do with the actual theme?! Besides, there’s no new movie on the horizon and there‘d be little point in announcing it at a videogame convention)

Hmm, most of the games I'm into are either too mature for TLG (Baldur's gate 3, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, God of war, Assassin's Creed Odyssey ( I like Assassin's creed in general but I love odyssey specifically)), or it has already touched (Mario, Zelda, Portal, Spider-Man, Horizon, Sonic, Minecraft, Batman Arkham)

I do like Pokémon but they would probably have done that at worlds this last weekend. And Mega has Pokémon ATM.

Maybe an independent game like stardew valley, that would be cool. (See my expired ideas project for proof that I think that would be cool)

Edit- looks like it was mario kart then? That's more of a sub-theme than a new theme anyway ( and a sub-theme they'd already announced no less).

If it helps, the reviews do show that the instructions for the set ‘branch off’ past a certain point depending on what version you want to build, however they both share the same base build up to an extent.

It looks like the spare pieces that are left over after building the OoT version significantly outnumber what you’re left with when building the BotW version.

I’m really happy to see how good this set is (price aside) going by these reviews. I got into the series after BotW so my attachment to OoT is minimal, but I’m still glad to see that Link’s house is its own build that can be kept even if one wants to display the BotW Deku Tree.

Huh, is that confirmed to be what it is?

Must‘ve been it! The schedule has been updated, with no mention of „Sparrow“ anymore. Maybe it was a codename for Mario Kart after all. Had they used „Leaf“, fans would‘ve known immediately

My Deku Tree preorder has been charged and officially is "in the warehouse." I haven't preordered a set in a while, so not sure how long it'll take to ship, especially with the holiday on Monday in the US. But fingers crossed it gets here quickly. So excited!

That does help! I peeked at some reviews to understand that more, and I think my best bet will be to just build the Breath of the Wild version and see what's left over. Then I can see how much of the Ocarina of Time tree I can build with my own collection of pieces and bricklink the rest? Hopefully there aren't too many recolored pieces that are only in this set.
