If I was JK Rowling I would have been POed at them for changing the castle and the characters (Fat Lady, Fltiwick, Tom, etc.) so much. Yes it's kinda all over the place, I do prefer the version we had from 4 and up (the one we see in the model at the studios), the one from 1 and 2 feels rather blad compared to later. The main change to the castle that really annoys me is the addition of another viaduct/bridge for the Deathly Hallows films, I understand why they did it, but it just looks so weird. The Tom change I understand since it's closer to the books version of him (although I'm not sure of the hump and weird laugh). Flitwick was one of the many mistakes the director of 4 made, in 3 it was meant as an entirely new character.
UKFan922 Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 @Brick Guru That link is amazing and so fascinating - thanks!
GoldenNinja3000 Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 I just realized the Burrow isn’t really open around the back, but rather it’s open on the left side when you face the front door. It definitely gives much more interior space to the build but it makes it look a bit awkward when looking at the front since you can see the kitchen and dining area poking out to the side. I would’ve loved some wall behind the kitchen since the open space behind the sink and counter bothers me a bit, but that’s a pretty minor nitpick and easy to fix.

The outside of Hogwarts could change drastically from film to film. Hagrid's Hut also looked different from year to year, even though each iteration of the hut always looked like it had been there for a lot time Oddly, the sense I got from the Harry Potter books was that the Hogwarts castle interior was prone to some measure of self-reconfiguration. I have to go back to check the early books, but I distinctly remember students getting lost because staircases and corridors constantly shifted. Edited April 30, 2020 by hagridshut

The link about the changes claimed there was one added, but the image used is fanart or concept art. I looked up some scenes from the film, but there aren't many shots that show that part of the castle, the only scene I found where you can kinda see it is the ending where the trio is on the new viaduct. It also looks like they made the gap smaller, this may be due to the enlarging of the courtyard (which I am also not a fan of).

Aside from the Viaduct move, I think DHII Castle looks the best - new Boathouse and Lookout Tower especially. Mixed feelings about the Training Grounds going though.

I didn't mind that Hogwarts changed throughout the years since most of the major layout changes were done on the 3rd film-- when there had only been two films out at that point, with the majority of films still to be made. But not only did the 8th film throw in major design changes that contradicted what had been established in the 7 prior films (the Viaduct, the Grand Staircase) but that is now the representation for Hogwarts in the Fantastic Beasts series as well. It's like fumbling on the final hurdle.

I would like a bridge and the boathouse but I wonder how they could work. This picture is quite good. It's not complete but it shows how the Astronomy tower is next to the viaduct entrance and the greenhouses. And it has the clock tower in the background and the great hall (all what we have). I feel like that building we got in the WW shows that they aren't afraid of making less iconic or recognisable parts. As that isn't really shown on any Hogwarts builds but only in the first 2 movies. The small building on the right side of the bridge looks like the smaller castle section in astronomy tower. It's easier to see how similar they are when you compare with the D2C Hogwarts castle. The boathouse could work as a small set.

Yeah I remember them saying in the books how due to Hogwarts being magic things casually change like the location of classrooms and common rooms. Which is my headcannon as to why the films version is always changing. The biggest changed that bugged me was the new Grand Staircase. FWIW I do quite like the DH version. But I did miss the moving ones we'd gotten use to over the films. The best list which is recommend is this one which compiles all the changes in the films. https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/129604/what-changes-have-been-made-to-hogwarts-throughout-the-series
DD840 Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 I was seriously considering getting Hogwarts Castle but I also want the clock tower...so now I'm torn between getting the whole castle or getting the various parts and configuring the larger scale together. Do we know how many other sections there might be? It might end up costing more in the end. I wish Lego would show how they all join together.
joeee Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 I feel validated after hearing all of you guys against the staircase change in DH2! The changing staircases are so iconic since film 1, it would’ve been a tight squeeze but so exciting and heartbreaking to see students and Death Eaters fight as the stairs get blasted apart!
Metanoios Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 I really like the new sets. The designers did a fantastic job with their budget and design restraints. As soon as I get the Room of Requirement set I'm gonna modify the mechanical Death Eater training dummy though. Also since we aren't gonna get Ginny in her Christmas party outfit in the Astronomy Tower I'm gonna add my custom version:

We don't know, as we don't know how many more years this theme will go on for. All the five parts of the minifig-scale castle already costs basically the same as the microscale. It just depends entirely on whether you want to have a complete minifig-scale collection that has some creative licence with locations, or the half a castle in microscale.

"There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts: wide, sweeping ones; narrow, rickety ones; some that led somewhere different on a Friday; some with a vanishing step halfway up that you had to remember to jump. Then there were doors that wouldn't open unless you asked politely, or tickled them in exactly the right place, and doors that weren't really doors at all, but solid walls just pretending. It was also very hard to remember where anything was, because it all seemed to move around a lot."

The pictures of the sets got released. Then lots of oohing and aahing at the new sets. By the way, hi everyone. Relatively new here! :-D Question for everyone... do you all display your hogwarts roughly how LEGO shows in their pictures or have some of you come up with a more accurate layout? I personally removed the yule ball part from the clock tower and attached it to the back end of the great hall. But thought some of you might be a bit more switched on as to the actual layout out of hogwarts and how to best represent it with what we have. Would love some suggestions, surprisingly can't find anything by googling. I also have the yule ball setup next to the great hall. I own all of the 2010-11 sets so I use them in my display.(Although my 2010 great hall was dropped, so I was happy when the new one came out. I didn't have a green house so the last couple of years I used the balcony ontop of the womping willow set to put prof sprout with a student and some mandrakes. I put the Arch way and snapes office on the other end after the clock tower to have a smother ending.

Spinozartre Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 I can't wait to see the entire collection and what we can do with it. I am also waiting to see your proposals to put all of the Hogwarts sets together to give ideas. I am completely in love with this range, but I remain skeptical when at the end. The way the LEGO sets officially present (on the right) suggests that this is just a playset and that they did not think about the possibility of assembling in depth to make it look like Hogwarts castle at the end... Will it really be a set that will make it possible to reproduce the castle or will there be too many parts missing ? Like Bridges, communal areas, boathouse, inner court ... In addition, what makes me the most doubt is the tower of the large hall from the start, which is much too small. Have people tried to double it with a second set? Is it taller and wider than all the other towers? What do you think ? Will we be able to create a coherent, grouped, rectangular and non-rectilinear set (see photo) Do you think that certain sets must be bought in duplicate to create games yourself ? Because there is a risk of missing some .. Will you integrate the room on request at the castle, like the rest, where and how ? Because it is an "interior" room but it has sockets to be hung outside. I love this range so much, but I'm really afraid that this whole minifig scale castle is just a set of rectilinear paysets, without the possibility of making a castle on a minifig scale. Many questions ahah and forgive my english, I am french (nobody is perfect !) ...

The Hogwarts Castle UCS is designed as a scale-accurate display model (the exterior, at least), though it only features about 1/3 of the castle. The playsets on the other hand will feature more areas of the castle in the end, but without heavy modding (adding landscape, bridges, courtyards) it will always be a more "impressionistic" version of the castle that highlights only certain key locations. With the playsets, the pin holes are on the side of every wall so that you arrange the modules however you like and LEGO can keep releasing Castle parts indefinitely, without worrying about how they are supposed to fit together. Take the Clocktower for instance. If one is trying to be a bit more accurate to the Hogwarts Castle design, it would be positioned behind the Great Hall. However, LEGO suggested that the sets all be attached in a line, with the Clocktower beside the Womping Willow wall, since this arrangement is better for showing each building and for fitting the whole castle on a shelf. It all depends on what setup scratches that LEGO Hogwarts itch for you. Edited May 1, 2020 by Ferder
