GUYS......... I note that the cho minifig is so great but if we look the details, it look like a strange fig because it's the Cho's head in Ginny's outfit (Cho's dress in the movie is grey)... Look :

The colour choice might be odd but it's clearly the design/pattern of Cho's dress, not Ginny's.

That colour doesn’t exist in LEGO, so light aqua was probably the best choice. Sure, they could’ve gone with light bluish grey (which you could argue would be a better approximation), but then it’d look too similar to Fleur’s dress IMO :shrug_oh_well:

This advent calendar looks great! I’m so glad Cho is included along with the twins, but now I can’t have every couple dancing in the Clocktower :cry_sad:

The builds are surprisingly good, I don’t mind The Triwizard Cup again since I think it looks great even if it’s too big, and I really love the Goblet of Fire and gramophone builds.

Am I the only one who looked at the advent calendar pictures and thought "There are no house banners!"  ;)

Haha, what will we do without them.

If there's one thing I'm glad they're doing again it's the fireplaces, as Hogwarts is filled with them: The Great Hall, offices, Common rooms, Room of Requirement (OotP version). It's no surprise either as Wizards use them to travel through or just communicate. So which I scorn banners, I approve fireplaces.

I'm surprised they didn't make like the sandtimers with jewels to count the house points in. Would have one for each house.

For those who don't do any major moc's to the sets like myself. What do you do with the small builds from the advent calendar? Have you found any particularly useful places within the current framework or the sets to add the advent calendar items? Do you just scatter them around your sets? Or take them apart and put them in the bag?

Particularly interested if anyone has any particularly good ideas of where to add them to the sets. I'd love to find a better use for some of the builds. But i've never liked things that aren't "attached" to my builds.

the couch build will look nice with the table in the astronomy tower with the party table. The table looks slightly less red compared to the couch though.

Well it certainly is an advent calendar.

Advent calendars aren't really for me because they don't look very good on display but some of these seem questionable for even the target audience. Present builds once again make up a sizable portion of the calendar and again I wonder who actually wants these? Plus we already had 4 last year and 2 of the new ones are just the old ones in new colors. The trees also seem a bit pointless. We already had very similar trees last year and those actually fit well with the tree in the clock tower set whereas the completely white trees here probably wouldn't fit with any of the 2019 trees.

Then we get to the out of scale builds. The triwizard cup seems pointless to me. It's too big to be a substitute for the previous ones for kids who missed out on them and it's not large enough to be much more detailed than the 2019 one (UCS triwizard cup after the UCS Dobby's sock?). The microscale builds are cute but pointless. I do think the carriage and ship could be fun if LEGO used a modified 2x2 tile with studs on the edge instead of the 2x2 jumper plates. This would let minifigures sit on them and essentially make them the Harry Potter version of microfighters.

I do really like the other builds though. The music stuff is fun, the sofa is great, and the fireplace is useful. The minifigures are also nice but I think they should've given Hermionie midlegs instead of the 1x2 brick. It would've been a nice alternate version of an existing figure like McGonigal figure last year. Overall though the 2020 HP advent calendar is fine. I'm probably only as critical as I am because the rest of the HP sets are so good.

On the Target website it list the Burrows as available August 15th for the US.

Whoooohooooooo

Plus you can preorder!

I just preordered The Burrow from Target, hopefully there aren’t any complications

Ooh, I already pre-ordered The Burrow from LEGO.com when it was available for a brief amount of time. I wonder if I should cancel that and order from Target instead. Who's going to get it first?

Also, speaking of pre-ordering sets in the US, I created a Facebook messenger bot that notifies me when any of the set's status changes on LEGO.com. I've been using it to track sets that come in stock, but also sets that I want to pre-order as soon as they become available (like the 2020 wave of HP sets). Send me a PM if you're in the US and want to give it a try :classic:

Now I really want to see all the hogwarts sets packed with the two advent calendars inside and maybe a couple of the new polybags.

Finally, the advent calendar drops. I’ve been waiting for this to happen since the Star Wars one was fully revealed (also figured it would come at the same time as the City and Friends ones, and yep, there they are).
Love the exclusive figures - definitely psyched to get Cho instead of another repeat. This will definitely fill out the Clocktower set nicely - although poor Fleur is now the only one without a date (but Roger Davies would be ridiculously easy to purist moc so that’s not too bad).

The builds are pretty much all amazing - yeah there are the requisite generic Christmas ones, but there are plenty of Hogwarts and Yule Ball specific builds to balance them out. I agree that the only thing that really falls flat for me is the triwizard cup, but I get why they included it, and, well, it’s impossible to create a truly accurate minifigure scale triwizard cup, so it is a little fun to see how different designers tackle the problem.

Kind of surprised not to get a Hedwig, since I kinda figured she’d be something they’d try to squeeze into nearly every advent calendar, like the husky in the City AC (although City doesn’t have a husky this year so...). But I don’t consider that much of a drawback since the new flying Hedwig came in over half of this year’s sets and the polybag.

Was then about to say! I was expecting at least one mediocre repeated build. But no! They’re all fantastic!

Man it's a bit of a tease but I would LOVE to have an official Hogwarts Nanoscale set that includes the entire grounds.

Technically the two windows on either side of the fireplace are probably repeat builds (at least I expect them each to come behind a separate door) but since they make up a nice little common room diorama instead of just being repetitive decorations and there’s only two of them it’s much less bothersome - more like the two tables from last year’s calendar.

Hagrid and a well scaled Fang would have to be the easiest to feel bag yet for a CMF. I'd really like that though, we need an official Fang at some point.

It wouldn’t be any different from all the easily identifiable costume minifigs, or the girl with the bike, Batman with dolphin.

So where are people going to be buying Collectible Minifigures during a pandemic?  I realize that most countries are not as screwed up as the United States, but...

I’ve felt minifigs a few times during this at both Target & Walmart. I just wash my hands when I get home. No problems so far. Friend & I do plan on buying a box though & splitting. Which we did last year as well.

I love new Goblet of Fire even though it’s a little oversized. Much better than the version in the Clocktower. I definitely don’t think we need anymore renditions of the Triwizard Cup though. I like the Rise Of Voldemort version better than this one. I’m glad they’re acknowledging the Durmstrang Ship as well

It’s great to have an accurate colored Goblet. Hard to really tell, but I don’t think it’s oversized, it’s pretty big in the movie. I agree about the Cup though, the set one is perfect. But it is nice to have a more proper handles.

The AC looks fantastic. The trees are a bit redundant, but I like the gramophone & other musical related items. Minifigs are of course great, that gives without saying. Using Harry in the Calendar could be recreated to make a decent Davies for Fleur.

Now we’re only missing Neville, Ginny, McGonagall, Roger and Karkaroff from the Yule ball :D I wonder if we’ll get any of these in the CMFs, perhaps only Karkaroff  and Ginny are “collectible” material.

I would rather get Yule Ball Moody than any of those to be honest

I really forgot about him. For me it’s Karkaroff > the rest.

Don't think anyone has mentioned it yet but the flame on the GoF is a new color

It looks like it on the render, but the first group photo on promobricks has it in trans-light blue. Although in the same photo Padma/Parvati has Hermione's dress for some reason :shrug_oh_well:

That's a lovely selection, I must say. Cho is definitely a standout, but Patil twins are great, too. Speaking of which, I'm not really an expert in recognizing new face prints, but if if they have them, they better be double sided - the twins need faces of utter resignation and boredom :snicker:

The builds are nicely done, the variety is very much welcome after four banners. The wrapped up Nimbus is a bit misplaced, someone must've run out of ideas

And I would've ditched the Yule Ball poster for a print of Hedwig's Theme on the note sheet :innocent:

Well, I'm just glad there's something new about one of the presents. I'm going to go by my book canon that it's the Firebolt from Sirius in PoA, as that's closer to GoF.

It's interesting the Yule Ball sheet, as it was a prop that was made, but not featured in the film. I like how Lego do look into these things. Also you can see the silvery piano in GoF before Professor Flitwick begun to conduct. But I agree, the music could've had an Easter egg there. (also just a random music stand with no instrument to go with, what's up with that?)

Posted

Is that sheet music tile a new print? If it is, that’s quite confusing, because when I go to play it on piano, if you make the B a B flat and the F an F sharp, it’s the first few notes to “When You Wish Upon A Star”...which is a Disney song lol

This will be the first advent calendar i ever buy. So glad we finally got yule ball Cho,she is one of my favourites. And there is lot of great builds. Really well done. Harry Potter sets keep surprising me with price, details, builds and minifigs.

I'm really impressed the Advent Calendar, but it's not a "must-buy" for me.  Will I get it eventually?  Almost certainly.  But I'm not a fan of the movie version of Goblet of Fire, and so the subject matter is really a letdown for me (especially since I already have the Clock Tower).  The graphic design and construction are technically excellent, but my personal preference will be to save money for Diagon Alley and/or some of the CMFs.

In other news, I just splurged and bought the Grawp set and the Tom Riddle book, and I feel really guilty about both.
