The August store calendar has been spotted and there is no mention of a VIP early access period :sceptic: Don’t be surprised if the set doesn’t get revealed for another three weeks  At least we have the CMF series to look forward to

I don't think the store calendar offers much evidence.  Why would a calendar mention anything about a hitherto-unrevealed D2C before the official press release?  Maybe I'm just in denial, lol.

I won’t lie, I’m kinda going to miss this anticipation we have currently. It gives me a bit to look forward to every morning. It’s almost as entertaining as the set itself!

Saw this and it encapsulates perfectly how I feel each day: excited anticipation and then crushing frustration. ?

I was thinking the same thing, but I looked at the 2018 August calendar (which came out before the Hogwarts D2C was announced) and it had a section that said "VIPs get access to a new exclusive LEGO set".

I know this calendar doesn't say anything like this, but what I find interesting is that days 28 - 30 have been clustered together into a blue VIP box. Why would they put these days together if they had no special VIP meaning? I know the obvious answer is that it's Lego and they often do illogical things, but it seems strange to me. The small text says: 'Sign up for VIP to start earning points towards discounts, exclusive sets, awesome Lego experiences, and lots more.' Could it be two days of buildup followed by the actual release day? The exclusive set could be DA and an awesome Lego experience the VIP Q&A. Just an idea, probably completely wrong, but :shrug_confused:.

They do that a lot on the store calenders. Just pick a few empty days and use it to advertise the VIP system

You can’t really judge what will be on the calendars now by what was on them 2 years ago though. After all, back in 2018 there was a large chunk of time when they weren’t putting GWPs on the calendars anymore (which had all the Harry Potter fans anxious about when the microscale DA would be available). It’s entirely possible that Lego isn’t announcing VIP early releases several weeks ahead of time right now because they want to have wiggle room to cancel an early release if they don’t have enough stock yet due to factory closures. Not everything’s been making it onto the calendars lately either, the July calendar doesn’t say anything about the miniature gingerbread house gwp that I saw being promoted on the website the other day :shrug_oh_well:

Given the recent proliferation of 18+ sets, including licensed sets like Star Wars Bespin Duel and Mario SNES, does anyone think Diagon Alley will be 18+? What 18+ Harry Potter sets do you think we could eventually get?

Although it seems like if they wanted to go that direction with Harry Potter, the buildable Hedwig would have ready been a good 18+ candidate.

Yes, Diagon Alley will almost certainly be 18+, which is ridiculous...  :hmpf_bad:

I think if/when Diagon Alley sells well, it’s safe to expect a D2C Hogsmeade within the next three years, but other than that I don’t think the Harry Potter theme needs any more enormous sets.  :classic:

Diagon Alley doesn't have to be 18+ at all. The 18+ sets target an older audience than the usual set, things most children likely wouldn't be interested in. I recon DA will be similar to the normal Potter sets but at a bigger scale due to it's price, a 16+ age recommendation would fit perfectly and it's also the recommendation the Hogwarts D2C and both Ninjago City sets got.

An 18+ set also doesn't have to be gigantic, some of them just happen to be big. But besides those we also have things like the Star Wars helmets and the upcoming Bespin Duel set.

Yeah, if I was 12 years old again just who got into LEGO Harry Potter, I would definitely want 71043 even if it is 16+!

True, not all 18+ sets have to be huge, the question is more whether all huge sets have to be 18+  I feel that the new 18+ label killed the 16+ one since most of these would be 18+ if released today and there’s nothing that separates a 16+ from a 18+ set in terms of content. The only reason I could get behind to keep both labels would be the boxart style

I agree. Unless DA has some hitherto unknown level of building difficulty there is no need for it to be an 18+ set. Even 71043 Hogwarts Castle is only 16+ as you say and that could arguably be classified as a 'adult' set due to the microscale/display nature. So going on that means that for this theme Lego seems to have made a judgement call that complicated building and display ability does not equal anything more than a 16+.

It's hard for me to say how I would have reacted as a kid to sets today, they're just so much better than when I was a kid. I remember my brother and I got the 2001 Hogwarts 4709 for Christmas and it was the biggest thing we've ever seen. Don't think my parents would have gotten me a $400 set though

When you think about it - 16 and 18 is only a two years age difference, and unlike sets meant for really young kids there shouldn’t be a large difference between the coordination and ability to comprehend difficult instructions between the two age groups. In most other situations 18+ would mean “only for adults” but since Lego has a pretty hard line about not making stuff with adult content, their 18+ means more “the target audience for this set is mostly adults who we’re afraid won’t touch it if we don’t put it in a slick black box and say it’s not for kids.” Meanwhile, adult Harry Potter fans will walk into Hot Topic or PBTeen to pick up their awesome fandom merch without batting an eye about what the target age group for those shops is perceived to be because we all stopped caring about that stuff ages ago. Anyway I doubt we’ll have to worry much about DA being 18+.

Me too. ? I never realised back then though how unique it was in terms of Lego having only done Star Wars sets as a licensed theme until they did Harry Potter.

This, 18+ is pure parketing. Althugh it seems the 18+ tag has "taken over" D2C sets in general, so I don't think we'll see 16+ on a box anytime soon. If anything, Diagon Alley will most likely have 12+ "rating", like Disney Train and Winter Village sets.

I have mentioned it before, but do people think we will ever get an Umbridge's ofice during this new line. We know that she wouldn't have to be included in the set because Madam Pomfrey, Mad eye and Sprout weren't included where their 'classrooms' were. The astronomy tower would have been a good place to include it, but there are lots of places where it could fit. People discussed how we might only get a couple more Hogwarts expansions, so I starting to get worried that we might never get her office. My guess for next years hogwarts expansion is the bell tower, with boat shed and covered bridge and I think it could fit in there. It is a very iconic room and is very hard to replicate in lego for. I would like to hear people's thoughts on this topic.

Whatever next year’s expansion is I imagine it will be Deathly Hallows based, focused on some aspect of the Battle of Hogwarts. As for potential castle sets beyond that - I suspect the Forbidden Corridor and the Chamber of Secrets will probably take priority over a room that never had a proper action sequence in it. Lego hasn’t done all the potential sets from OotP by a long shot, but the thing is, after the first two movies more and more of the really big action scenes happen outside of the castle until DH2 (there’s a reason the large castle sets from the last two years have both featured Christmas parties). It’s even more noticeable in OotP where 90% of the story has the main characters helpless to influence the main conflict and most of the meaty scenes with a large number of characters (inside the castle) happen in the already done Room of Requirement. With the Weasley twins’ fireworks rather trick to pull off properly in LEGO form, I can only really see Umbridge’s office sneaking into a set if they ever get around to redoing the Room of Requirement or Dumbledore’s office.

I agree with you on your Bell Towers prediction, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for Umbridge’s office. As @Accio Lego already mentioned, next year’s wave of sets will be primarily Deathly Hallows based.

(I imagine LEGO had also planned to release a few Fantastic Beasts 3 sets in the next wave but, with all the uncertainty in the film industry right now, I anticipate FB3 will be postponed. Hopefully, that will open up a few slots for LEGO to fill in a few missing sets from the previous waves.)

If I had to wager a guess on the 2021 wave, I’d say:

- Hogwarts Bell Towers (large set w/ library, Hufflepuff common room, staircase and belfries where Harry and Voldemort duel)

- Escape from Gringott’s (medium set w/ Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon, Lestrange vault, and mine cart)

- Skirmish at Malfoy Manor (medium set w/ main hall and dungeon)

- The Forest of Dean (small set w/ tent build, sword of Gryffindor in the lake, doe patronus)

- The Chamber of Secrets (small two-level tower set w/ girls bathroom and Slytherin common room on second floor, Slytherin Head build and snake hall on first floor, new Basilisk build, Fawkes w outstretched wings)

- Durmstrang Ship (large set w/ Karkaroff and Triwizard champions in lake challenge gear, mermaids, Grindylows)

I’m also worried about Diagon Alley being 18+ because correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there’s been a large 16+ set since LEGO rebranded to 18+ in April. It seems that 18+ has simply replaced 16+ as the upper end of the LEGO age range and it’s been accompanied by the black boxes to make the sets look fancier and more adult targeted, which works well for some sets but I think would be horrible for a set like Diagon Alley. I hope it’s not 18+ for that reason but with 16+ appearing to be dead I’m afraid we’re going to get one of those black boxes for this set...

My thoughts exactly :classic: The main question is what dictates the age range of a set. Size alone can’t be it since the last Death Star playset was 14+. The target audience for DA should also be quite varied in its age range, opposed to the Grand Piano or the NES which are pretty clearly focused on adults, despite having play features as well.

It’s very hard to draw a conclusion here, especially since the lines between display models and playsets can be very blurry. The good thing here is that once DA is revealed, we at least know how TLG will handle it for all future D2Cs

The chance for a reveal increase every day now and it will peak on Friday in my mind :excited:

This however I think is more likely
