Agreed, that's why I'm confused about it. They usually pay a lot of attention to detail, so it's weird to see them change something like this. The only reason I can think of for LEGO to change it intentionally is that he says his favorite color is lilac. The robes are definitely lilac.

I think if we say theres a chance they might only ever do one Lockhart in the reboot, the version we got is the better choice. If they do a chamber set they might just end up with Ginny, Tom Riddle and Harry, if it's a RoR size set or similar.

I'm not sure, it looks more like a 1x2 tile to me actually.

Look closely, there is clearly a wand inside something... that tile is just a cover.

I dunno about it. Obviously Diagon Alley has volume going for it, and a high level of detail. I am sure there are going to be all sorts of wonderful details in there once we get proper pictures, especially of the interiors. But I'm not sure that it's necessarily all that striking, when you get over the sheer size/detail of it - I question some aesthetic choices here. I think I would have preferred it if it had been less colourful and more grounded/realistic looking, more like the Diagon Alley we see in Philosopher's Stone with a strong Victorian aesthetic. To me this set looks like if you took Diagon Alley and gave it the Willy Wonka treatment. Weasley Wizarding Wheezes is supposed to stand out for its colourfulness.

Also, the minifigures are not mind-blowing. All the schoolkids have short legs which I've never liked. Would have added much more value if they had mid-legs. Really, when it comes to the mini-figs, the only 2 that I feel I would miss not having are Lucius Malfoy and Gilderoy Lockhart. And of those two, it seems likely that Lucius will come around in another set at some point in the future.

I'll reserve full judgement until we get full resolution pics of both exterior and interior. But I'm feeling like I can safely skip the Diagon Alley set.

I've been holding off buying any HP sets this wave until the CMF and DA sets were revealed so I could look at my options. And those options are either:

1. Diagon Alley. Total 5544 pieces, 14 minifigs, £350 (£0.06 per piece), or

2. The Burrow (£85) + Astronomy Tower (£70 on sale) + CMF (say, £80). Total 2018 pieces, 32 minifigs, £235 (£0.11 per piece)

With Diagon Alley you get more pieces for sure, and better cost per piece and therefore theoretically better value. However, overall I'm leaning towards the latter as giving you more stuff, especially when you take the minifigs into account. And of course option 2 is for substantially cheaper.

Hi everyone, another newbie jumping on board. Been using the forum for years but never got around to posting before (not sure why). Inspired to now because early impressions are this could be one of my favourite ever sets.

My son and daughter are both growing up fast, so we don’t buy much Lego anymore. Any sets we do buy have to be a theme all three of us love so we can enjoy them together, and they have to be cohesive display pieces (none of us want to go back to the days of loads of random Friends and Star Wars sets kicking around). To give an idea we’ve only got two sets in the last three years - Hogwarts and the Upside Down - both themes all three of us enjoy.

Been following this thread for months and I know how much a lot of you care about Lego, about HP, and about this set in particular. I know we all had very high expectations and want things to be just so...but I’m surprised by the overall response to the leaks. Seems to be quite a bit of disappointment (?) with many wishing something about the set was different.

I’m worst that most for being critical but I’ve got to say I think Lego knocked this out of the park. A few years ago we couldn’t have dreamt of getting a DA set like this. It’s screen accurate (apart from WWW) to the first time we (and Harry) saw DA in the films. We get 100cm of detailed modular style street, with variety of size, shape, texture and colour. The interiors look really detailed with loads of cool touches. The minifigures are completely appropriate and look fine to me.

Are there things Lego could have done differently? Of course. They could have included Gringotts instead of WWW for greater screen accuracy....but WWW is so cool it would be a tough call to leave it out. They could have changed the colour for QQS, or included other shops...but then they lose even more screen accuracy there.

Personally I’m happy to accept the design choices they made and appreciate this for what it appears to be from the early pics. a superb recreation in Lego of one of the most evocative locations in literature/film.

That said, I’d have liked a DP office above the QQS shop, and Arthur alongside Molly.

Our ranking of the four builds is:

Ollivanders/Scribbilus, WWW/KA, QQS/DP (even with the pink!), F&B/FF. We’re just hoping they come with separate instructions so we can enjoy an afternoon building them together.

Looking forward to better pics and a designer vid.

First of all, welcome to EB!

People's opinions as far as I've read them are generally positive but it's good to take in mind that this is still a forum, we discuss things. When something's good we generally just talk about it for a bit and move on but the negatives tend to be discussed more and for a longer period of time because they are obviously things that could've been done better and we all have different ideas of what the word ''better'' means in a certain situation. So even if we do talk about a set's faults for a while that doesn't mean we're all disappointed

I think, looking at how the conversation has progressed throughout the day, that the general consensus is overall positive! We’re all discussing little things here or there, but in general this is what everyone asked for. Could things be a little different, yea. I’m not a huge fan of the pink for QQS. And I know some people are a little bummed with the minifigures (I don’t mind, personally), but this set is quite impressive and probably the coolest modular set that Lego has ever produced. Naturally, this forum will be discussing criticisms and stuff, and the positive reactions usually go unnoticed, but there’s no doubt most of us love it or have grown on it since this morning!

I think much of my disappointment stems from the fact that I am first and foremost a fan of the HP books rather than movies. In most sets, the difference can be mostly ignored. But I think the difference between movie Diagon Alley and how it's described in the books is perhaps greater than with e.g. Hogwarts castle.

For reference, here is the artwork of Diagon Alley that was posted on Pottermore:

@Taure I can understand some disappointment based on what you’re imagining, but it’s been clear since 2018 that the Lego sets are based on the movies not the books, so the expectation of a street like shown above would be quite a departure. I do like those pointed roofs though!

There is this promotional image from CoS, taking place in Flourish and Blotts, and there his clothes have the exact same colour as this figure, the lightning must be off. So I think this is another 2018 Quirrell situation. I mean look at this, it's pretty spot on to the figures colours.

Good catch.

What happened with 2018 Quirrell?

Now for Lockhart,

[snip]

Now for the torso, the colours are obviously off. Although I know exactly why that is. There is this promotional image from CoS, taking place in Flourish and Blotts, and there his clothes have the exact same colour as this figure, the lightning must be off.

I was looking up Lockhart's F&B attire earlier because I watched the movie recently and I was sure he wore blue in that scene. Someone on Instagram also posted a promotional shot where his suit and robes were, sure enough, blue. But a quick internet search showed him mainly in what I consider blue ... and then there's that one image you've posted and I instantly knew where Lego had got their colouring from. But the thing is, that picture just looks like an oversaturated shot to me where the red tones are clearly accentuated and when all other images from both watching the movie and promotional shots show blue, I have to question why Lego chose to go with the lilac. They must have seen the images and movie we have. ?

On Lockhart's robes - in the book chapter, he's described as wearing "forget-me-not blue robes". Looks like LEGO ended up forgetting :iamded_lol:

Regardless, you'd think just watching the movie would be a baseline requirement for designing the minifigures, right? In the movie, it's pretty clearly blue.

? As I say above, I don't get it either. Pity the upcoming Q&A won't be a livestream or that would be a question we could ask the graphic designer.

Yeah, we can only speculate on why they do this. Like Draco in the AT. We saw him in both appearances at the Slug Club party & the pivotal death scene in a black suit, not his school robes. Or Hermione with Grawp. They can only do so much, even if it’s a very weird choice like on the case of Lockhart.

Welcome! I think a bit of disappointment is inevitable when we have been building this set up (for 500+ pages ) and each of us probably developed an idea of what we thought the D2C Diagon Alley would (or should) look like.

I’m with you, though - I am overwhelmingly happy with what LEGO has done here. I think the attention to detail is unparalleled for a licensed set. I can’t wait to see the official high res images and watch the design interview with Marcos.

The only real disappointment for me is the minifig selection. I would’ve preferred Arthur in his fun, weird little hat to Molly in what looks like black mourning garb. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco should’ve come with those iconic little black capes they wear in COS. And LEGO could have given us another random witch or wizard (I’m actually heartbroken that we aren’t getting Doris Crockford and Daedalus Diggle).

But it’s clear to me that this is the beginning of a bigger modular display, so more minifigs to come. We’re almost guaranteed to get Gringott’s and Borgin and Burke’s as separate sets. Maybe even the Leaky Cauldron. And I can see us getting more two-shop sets to continue adding on to this. It’s an exciting time to be a LEGO Harry Potter fan!

I don't have the book to hand but I don't really feel like the movie does depict Diagon Alley in any way that contradicts that description. That picture isn't part of the book and came years after the movies so it seems unfair to say it's how Diagon Alley looks in the book. Here's Jim Kay's rendition of Diagon Alley which I think most would agree is quite similar in style and vibe to the movies, whilst of course different in the specifics.

I agree that this artwork is a good depiction of Diagon Alley, but I don't think this image much resembles the movie version or the Lego set as revealed. For me, Diagon Alley should look like you've started with a normal Victorian street and then twisted it and turned it a bit bonkers. Whereas the Lego set feels like a series of completely distinct buildings without any real thematic unity or common aesthetic.

Posted (edited)

It's more or less an exact copy of THAT side of the street from first film. shops layout everything!  (ignoring weasleys)

the only definite change made is they used the 'modern' design of the daily prophet door.  in the first film there was a door right there, just less ornate.

Everything else checks out.

in film two olivanders was painted green and labeled Flourish and blotts. in that film there was 2 green bookshops in that street :P

Shame about the figures.....

At least 200 of those are discussions about microscale DA...

I think it’s a testament to the passion and excitement that Harry Potter fans have for this renewed LEGO series. And LEGO is doing right by us! I think it was @dvt who predicted that the Wizarding World would eventually overtake the popularity of Star Wars in a generation or two because kids parents will have grown up as mega fans of Harry Potter. I think we’re already heading in that direction!

What if the GWP is an expansion for the microscale DA from last year

To be totally honest, I dont even care about HP that much, but I've been following the leaks for a few months and now I kinda want to start collecting the sets (except the quiddich stadium of course)

Just had a thought how cool a D2C Quiditch staduim would be. 20 figures with each houses team and a full oval with some stands.

I hope and suspect you’re right. The rumours about a third Ninjago City set has to be a good sign in terms of the direction Lego are willing to tale with these kind of sets. Would love some future expansions beyond Gringotts!

Yes, but where are we meant to put all of these displays. ?
