You have the AAA Powered Up hub for that purpose exactly :)

Yes, an interesting waste of money and ressources when models like 42109 uses 2 ports on 4-port-hub when you have the AAA hub for that purpose exactly with no restriction besides mounting points etc ;)

But mounting points are a significant restriction. The AAA PU hub has a footprint of 4x8 studs and is 4 bricks high. It fits poorly into typical odd-sized Technic models, as you'll have to create half-stud offset for symmetrical mounting. Of course for some models it doesn't matter if the mounting is symmetrical or not, but for example for most vehicles it does. The height of 4 bricks is a tiny little amount (about the height of the "LEGO" on top of each stud) over 5 studs of length, so fitting it between beams 5 studs apart means putting stress on the elements so if you want to be purist about it, you'd need to have a space of 5,5 studs high for mounting it, while it's width requires 5 studs of space unless you can think of an other use for the half-stud wide areas on the sides of the hub. This makes it effectively 5x8x5,5 studs in size, as for symmetric Technic models are concerned. It's still smaller than the AA hub but not by that much.

42109 of course was designed around the AA hub so it fits well, and I'm not sure how it would be improved by changing the hub to AAA type.

'Cause the 2-port-hub is cheaper, meaning a cheaper price for the entire set. Furthermore the 42109 does not use the gyro sensor anyway, so there is no need for this hub in this model. A simple model that can drive and steer only does not require an overpriced hub with features not used. The AAA-hub can handle the L and XL motor together as well, but in this set, you get an overpriced hub with 2 ports and one sensor unused.

That's actually incorrect, the gyro sensor is used in the challenges to detect if you turn with the model or not.

Swapping the hub to the AAA version only improves slightly the top speed but makes a big difference with the climbing abilities, you can check it out here. But this car is not about climbing so I don't think a lot of people would notice the difference :)

Since the Technic hub is a structural part of the build that's the main reason why it was used instead of the AAA hub, you don't have to disassemble anything to get access to the batteries and it simply fits better in the Technic studless system.

Sometimes i think i'm the only person in the world that likes Control+..!! PU was old, outdated and limited. C+ isn't perfect but has massive potential, is hugely scaleable and uses far better comms protocol.... can't wait to get my hands on the new horizontal motor. Hey C+, I still love you!! :grin:

You mean PF? PU (I call it PUp because I find it funnier and three-letter combinations are less ambiguous) and C+ are just two marketing names for the same platform.

You're thinking correctly.

He is not the only one liking Control+, but there are lots of improvemente to be made till we really get a system to work with. But TLG has tons of possibilities here, they just take their time (as always).

Back to topic: Appart from the design, does the horizontal motor have extra torque compared to XL-motors, or is it just the 90° angle of the axle connector?

The motor allows better and stronger connection. Instead of using one axle hole, a frame or structure can be connected to the pin holes as well. This might be the better and stronger joice for articulated steering. It is the same with wheels and hubs. A wheel can fit to its center axle with no problems, but is much stronger and better connected with additional pins at wheel hub. So the main difference to this new motor is, that it rotates a platform of 3x3 studs instead one axle, which is much stronger.

The new 51515 mindstorms brings the mudguard in white. With this release, it is possible to build the front of the hauler completely in white. The model looks then with (some minor changes and) yellow tipper like Liebherr hauler, for example TA230. Requires changes on rims and orange rails, but for guys who love the Liebherr more, it is possible to do.

german translation, better quality. It is interesting to see different speeds on the interface, like 42109, but unfortunately no shortcuts for custom or programmable movements

I still have no idea why TLG aren't calling this thing the Volvo A60H. Would a semi-numerical model designation be too much for the yoof of today to handle?

It is especially strange since the Lambo, Ducati, Bell Osprey (and the Liebherr) are all in the catalogue with their precise designation...

'Cause with no stickers, it is not recognizable  as A60H :D

You are not alone. Control+ is powerful, but I am afraid that for the moment I am one of the few that made MOCs based on it.

It is fun to program with the Powered up app, not the Control + app, that is a dead app just for kids.

It would be much better if we could program it on a PC, because programming a graphical interface on a mobile is really a pain.

Besides, you cannot save a file and share with people. Now that someone doing my MOC is asking for help to control it, it is not easy to help.

If you are interested my MOC is here. By the way, 42114 looks just perfect to use together...
