yumacrew Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 Hello, FIRST post here so I hope my question is OK for the forum. I purchased the 75252 ISD for my son to build (yes, I'm helping). We have gotten to Bag #7, and have built the (see picture) the 2 sort of big triangular pieces that go BEHIND the engines and block people from seeing inside the ship. I've drawn a red line indicating the cross beam that extends and helps to connect the 2 pieces to the build. We installed the lower, or bottom triangle with very little issue, BUT we noticed the "cross beam support" is flexed a bit (we figured it was part of the build. BUT when we try to put the top shield (honestly I don't know what to call it, but these shields create the back panel of the ship when installed)....the top shield/panel has an issue(s) when we try to connect it. The 'flex' in the cross beam support seems to be just a small fraction off. Last night, after fiddling with it, I was able to get it connected but felt it wasn't exactly right. When we got up this morning, 2 of the 4 black connectors had come apart. I hope I am making sense here. BTW, if you watch this video from the Lego builder and scrub to approximately 3:30 you see him connect the 2 pieces I'm talking about (but you can't see the cross beam because of the angle). ALSO, he connects it all as 1 piece...not 2, which is DIFFERENT from the instructions. SO...I am very sorry for the long post, but: 1) have you built this?? 2) IF SO, did you run into the same issue?? 3) Any solution if you did?? THANKS SO MUCH in advance!! I have a VERY worried 14-year-old....HECK, I'm worried that I won't know how to fix it for him!! AGAIN, thanks. Kevin Quote
Bandit778 Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 (edited) First up, I haven't built the set so anything at this point is going to be purely speculative based on the instructions and what you've said in your post. Firstly, I wouldn't worry about the designer video as he has it built as separate modules for ease of construction on the video and I would imagine the designer has had the build put together and pulled apart more times than he cares to mention so probably has more insight than most as to short cuts to take when building. As for you question, from looking at the instructions, have you double checked the spacing on the two end builds of the middle support strut to make sure that the gapping in between the technic beams and the plates that hold the right angled end plates is correct? If this is out on one of the ends this may cause the problems your dealing with as it may have meant the black hinges are in slightly the wrong place which in turn could possibly bend the support strut when the bottom rear panel is fitted which could mean the top one won't fit without undue stress. Also you mentioned two of the four hinges popped out. Shouldn't it be connected by six hinge plates (two on either end of the support strut and two in the middle hinged small panel which is connected to the bottom large panel)? As I said, haven't built the model myself so this is purely guess work but from stuff I have built, if a section appears to be over stressed in any way, I've usually made a small error somewhere. Hope you get your issue sorted even if this doesn't help. Edited February 11, 2020 by Bandit778 Quote
lowlead Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 (edited) *Bandit beat me to it!* Sorry to hear you're encountering some difficulty. I don't recall having any issues with the steps you're referring to - everything went together without issue. It sounds like the assembly points are stressed because some small step was either missed or put together incorrectly. On page 189 of the online instructions (Step 309) there's an inset with a depiction of the correct and incorrect alignment of the gray Technic beams. I would start there and go backwards in the manual to search for a potential oversight. Even after building for the majority of my lifetime, I'll still catch myself rushing and making a mistake. Staring at those instructions for so long can hurt your eyes, too Building a set like the SD is a marathon, not a sprint. Best of luck! Bandit778 Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 @lowlead, at least you've built it so have more insight than I do. I was just guessing. Quote
yumacrew Posted February 11, 2020 Author Posted February 11, 2020 FIRST OFF, thank you Bandit778 & lowlead for responding. I will most certainly check these things when I get home this evening. BOTH of you seem to have the right idea. Something must be just slightly out of place. When I tried multiple times last night, it really seemed like we are off my a mere centimeter or two. VERY close, but JUST enough that it has caused this stress. PRAYING I find it!!!! Quote
yumacrew Posted February 22, 2020 Author Posted February 22, 2020 Bandit & Lowlead, THANK YOU!!! WE FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT (We were traveling last week and away from home). AMAZING how just one small misstep caused such an issue!!! We're BACK on track!!! Quote

I know it's been awhile, but how did you solve the problem, can you please share the solution? I seem to have something similar and stuck at the same area :( I've gone through instructions multiple times and can't find what I'm doing wrong because it looks like everything is done just like in the manual, however, Iike you said 'the top shield/panel has an issue(s) when we try to connect it. The 'flex' in the cross beam support seems to be just a small fraction off...' I would really appreciate your advice! Thank you! Quote
yumacrew Posted March 23, 2021 Author Posted March 23, 2021 (edited) Sorry for delayed response. It has been awhile and we DID fix it, but only by very carefully working backwards!! We had misconnected in 1 area by just 1 notch. As we continued the build it probably added just enough space to cause the issue. Once found, everything fell into place! Was frustrating for sure, but just made the build more interesting. Not to mention we purchased a light kit to install and it looks amazing! Kevin Edited March 23, 2021 by yumacrew Quote
