Posted March 16, 20204 yr The question I'm starting to ask myself more and more these days, especially when buying new sets. I'm in my mid-30s and definitely have more sets than my younger self could ever imagine having, so I fulfilled my mission. And I'm not really playing with it besides admiring a small part of my collection that is currently on display. Most of my sets are parted out or not assembled and if I have some free time to build MOCs (which is rare) I build them mostly in Studio. But at the same time, I can't imagine stopping buying new sets. Sometimes I think my collection is worth something and I'm investing. But then I realize, it's not really the case. Used Lego is very hard to sell other than in bulk so it's not really about money. I'm sure this has been discussed here before, yet I'm curious how folks are dealing with this if anyone can relate.
March 16, 20204 yr I’m going to assume the most common answer you’ll get is NO! But interesting question nonetheless. My wife is a quilter as a hobbyist and her business. Two rooms in our house are filled with fabric, yet she’ll always come with more from every show she goes to. i have at least 3 dozen large sets unbuilt stashed away and I still buy (fortunately not as many recent Technic sets have tempted me). I tell myself they’ll be one of my hobby’s in retirement. That Palace Cinema isn’t going to build itself after all! Nonetheless, I do have enough. But I don’t have too much.
March 16, 20204 yr Of course you can have enough of it, and give up. It is not really any different to other hobbies. Plus used LEGO is easy to sell as sets if kept as the complete set.
March 16, 20204 yr "Enough" is when you, while building a MOC, never have to stop building because you don't have the necessary parts to continue. "Too much" is when you do have the correct kinds of parts but it takes so long to find them that you rather stop building. Yes, "too much" is sometimes less than "enough".
March 16, 20204 yr Enough is when you decide Enough can be from a sole Red Bullet (4582) to one million ucs falcons!

I think you decide when you have enough. Although as long as you keep your stuff together, lego sells for a ton on bricklink/ebay. In my personal experience I've had people buy figures for $20, $30 even, but if you look there are figures from normal retail sets that released commercially going for waaaaay more than that, and people are buying them. not to mention the sets themselves, especially in themes like star wars, they're worth a ton of money.
March 16, 20204 yr There is never enough LEGO, just not enough space! I prefer to build my own things and I have a (small) dedicated space to MOC in, as LEGO is my main hobby there are not many things to distract or take that space. Really, even if I could not continue to purchase new LEGO, I would still enjoy and use my collection as it is. I would just desire the new colours and parts

March 17, 20204 yr Short answer: Yes For me its not can you have enough Lego, its can you have enough of the bricks you actually want. That seams to be my issue lately. Edited April 19, 20204 yr by LegoDW
March 17, 20204 yr Author Thanks very much everyone for all your answers. It was very interesting to read! Bricklink is a lifesaver, yes. I will have it in mind when I'm ready to sell my collection. Which probably won't going to happen unless I really have to. But yeah, it seems that only space is the most significant deciding factor in our passion. @Brandon Pea Yes, his collection is mind-blowing! I'm sure his youtube business pays for it though since he is doing it full time! :) @dr_spock I know what you saying lol. At this point, I think she gave up already. But we do have a budget, so I'm trying to not go over it (even though sometimes I have to get something on special Lego credit lol, especially when a set I want is retiring) :)
March 19, 20204 yr This is the tricky part about any hobby...when is enough enough? Personally, I would say never. Space is really the only true killer of a collection. Once you run out of space, you have to then make the choice to sell some of what you have if you want new stuff, or just stop buying new stuff. It can get overwhelming for sure. I recently, for the most part, completely stopped getting comic books because it just started to feel like too much. I don’t see that ever happening with LEGO for me. Everything I have is built & either displayed(which gets rotated every so often) or is in containers. If space started to become a big issue, I would likely still buy, just not build them immediately. I do sometimes look around & see the vast majority of my collection just sitting there unbuilt. But I don’t feel as it’s too much.
March 19, 20204 yr I'm not new to collecting Lego, but I don't have much honestly. And most of the stuff, actually all of it at one point, after I assemble it I give it to my nieces and nephews. I know this is atypical but I try to maintain somewhat of an adult view on this hobby as much as I can. I looked around a lot for a set for my nephew who is 6 years old, he's not that invested in Lego so I don't want something overly complicated. He's gonna sit with me for a week next month and I want to get a set to make with him while he's at my place. I really like this one https://popular.reviews/lego-set/#8_LEGO_Classic_10696, but 484 pieces might be a bit too much for the little guy. What do you guys think? If you have other suggestions, please tell me. I really want to get him more excited about Lego.

Even though there are lots of pieces, the builds in the instructions are really straightforward. Plus bucket sets like this get them "free building" (not following instructions) which is a good thing too.

I charge the dealer's shop labor rates.
April 9, 20204 yr Having bought 42069 when it came out and looking at my current surroundings ( I am surrounded by lego in my room ) I was asking myself the a similar question. Do I need any more lego? google street view Edited May 6, 20204 yr by carltate

Do I need any more lego? Yeah, I know that feel... I keep looking at all those places where I have to hide my LEGO meanwhile and think: "Maaaaan, you REALLY need to stop buying, this is getting out of hand!" And the next day you'll spent another 40 bucks for yet another old set you always wanted in your youth, as you are NOW able to finally buy it... *throws all resolutions over board* I think I'll go with what @dr_spock said... someday my wife will put an end to it. This will be the day when I have finally time to reduce my LEGO pile of shame and get building! So this will be "enough" when it comes to buying, but definitely not when it comes to building.
April 11, 20204 yr Only if it gets to the point where health, safety, and relationships become affected. I think this is true for any hobby.
April 11, 20204 yr Nowadays, you can never have enough. I'm expecting a "COVID-19" survival kit this week aka. A huge Lego haul.
April 11, 20204 yr I have been sorting mine out now. About two years ago I had a big old sort out of my parts and took apart a lot of old MOCs and sets. With all the downtime after work (Key Worker ) I need something to destress with. I am nearly finished sorting and I have not got enough storage boxes! Then I can get down to building again . So yes, I can reiterate: Never too much LEGO, just not enough space (or boxes!)
