Erdbeereis Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I am considering getting one of the Speed Racer sets but I am not sure which one to get. First of all, are they worth getting? And if so, which one would be best? I am mainly wondering if the speed racer + snake oiler set is better or the other $20 one with racer x and taejo. Or is it worth getting the grand prix? Thanks a lot! Quote

Just make sure to steer clear from the Cruncher Block Truck Quote

And definetly don't get Cruncher Block! Edited May 14, 2008 by Flatfoot Thompsen Quote
Svelte Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Go the Racer X and Taejo set. The colours aren't as exciting (yellow and red) but the design of the cars is way better than the other 2-car set and the figs are awesome too. Quote
Oswald the Rabbit Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 You should go for the Grand Prix for the sole purpose that it includes a LEGO monkey Quote
Hewman Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Go the Racer X and Taejo set.The colours aren't as exciting (yellow and red) but the design of the cars is way better than the other 2-car set and the figs are awesome too. I agree with svelte corps, I have the racer X and Taejo set and it's pretty good, and the design of the mach 5 isn't that great. I like the mach 6 in the grand prix set though, but there is a huge price difference between the two smaller sets and the grand prix set. Quote
Siegfried Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Go the Racer X and Taejo set. I agree. I picked that over the Grand Prix set as I wanted some of the new windscreens and oddly the Grand Prix set has none. It has less of the new arches too. Quote
Erdbeereis Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 (edited) Thanks for all of the help guys! I might try the smaller Racer X and Taejo set, and if I really like it then I might get the grand prix. So the general consensus is that Racer X and Taejo are better than Speed racer and Snake Oiler right? Overall do you think that the Speed Racer Theme is good and worth getting a set or two? Svelte Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 The figs in Grand Prix are great (and there is a monkey!) but as Sinner says, it doesn't have the new windscreens, and as Hewman says, it is kind of pricey. Personally I found the colour scheme for Grand Prix very bley-ey, white and black unless you apply all 2-billion+ stickers supplied with it. The 2 smallest sets aren't bad value, personally I just prefer the vehicle design and figs from Taejo vs Racer X. They're a bit more solid-looking than the Snake Oiler ones. Wait til they're on sale and get both! Quote

Thanks a lot! My personal favorite of 8158 and 8159 would be 8159. (Taejo & Racer X) The figs are much better then the ones from 8158, and I think the design of the cars is a little better, plus there are fewer stickers. If you need more info on 8158 or 8159, you could always check out my reviews of them via clicking the links in my signature. Also if you can afford it 8161 is supurb, 7 awesome and very useful figs, plus a monkey in Rown. There's also ample amount of useful parts and accessories included with the set. Also as far as I know if you live in the US Target is still having a sale on Speed Racer Lego sets. I got 8161 for $10 less then MSRP, $15 less counting the $5 Target coupon I used, it twas a great deal. I also got the 8160 for cheap too, thus completing my Speed Racer set collection. Reviews are pending. Hope that helps your situation Erdbeereis1. -Tarfful EDIT: After reading Erdbeereis1's most recent post in this topic, I have this to say... I think Speed racer as an entire Lego Theme is worth collecting, if not for your love of Speed Racer then for all the great minifigs and parts included in the sets. FYI I collected it for the minifigs and cool parts, I didn't even know what Speed Racer was until I saw a trailer for the movie, I'm still not sure if I like Speed Racer (apart from the Lego sets), but I know a good great Lego Theme when I see one. EDIT 2: Spelling and grammer check. Edited May 15, 2008 by Tarfful Quote
LegoJoe Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I'd go with the Speed Racer and Snake Oiler set. The cars are pretty big and you get some nice new car parts. The Grand Prix is just too expensive. Yes, it has some nice minifigs, but for that price you could get three of the Snake Oiler and Speed Racer sets and get about 100 more pieces. Quote
theestampede Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 screw you guys and your Speed and Oil Slicker hatred Mach 5 = pure goodness I would do almost anything for a real Mach 5 not sure why they didn't use helmets without chin straps or put a visor on speed though... Quote

Piranha Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 My favorite one is the Grand Prix, because it comes with alot of great figs and the best looking cars out of the other sets The Mach 6 is a sweeter Mach 5, but I wish they gave us some wind shields The other two racers included have a nice color scheme However if you wanted a less expensive one then I would go with the Mach 5 one, since that is what Speed Racer is all about You can't have a LEGO speed racer set, without Speed Racer! However the best one is the Grand prix Quote
Hopewell Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 My recommendation is at minimum pick up the Grand Prix since you get so many great minifigs and the Mach 6 with two cars to race. Then get the Speed Racer/Snake Oiler set because the two seat Mach 5 looks great with Speed and Trixie in it. THEN pick up the jungle duel set from the Indiana Jones line for the Irina hair (for Trixie) and pick up a Robin from the Batman line for Speed's hair. Now you're set. Quote
Erdbeereis Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 (edited) I think I will first get Speed Racer and Snake Oiler, mainly because I like the colors a bit better than on Racer X and Taejo's cars. And then if I like those a lot I might get the Grand Prix. And if I like that one as well then I might get the other $20 set too . First I need to wait until my Target restocks the sets. All of the $20 sets sold out really quickly, and the other 2 only have a few copies left. Thanks for all of the help! Edited May 14, 2008 by Erdbeereis1 Quote
Batbrick Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Grand Prix has a lot of new figs with fantastic torsos and faces, but you will need to get another small set if you wish to get the cool windshields and more new wheel hubs. I've bought the Cruncher Block set, and while I agree it is the weakest of the three, it's not totally bad Batbrick Away! Quote
Corvus Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 The Mach 5 is nice, but Snake Oiler needs some help, IMO. I bought Racer X and Taejo, great sets. Quote

Erdbeereis Posted May 15, 2008 Author Posted May 15, 2008 Ok this is the last time I will post in this thread . I changed my mind once again and decided to try Racer X and Taejo first because after much deliberation I decided that the design of the cars was better than on the other set. If I really like it I might still buy the other $20 set. I think I will pass on the Grand Prix for now so I can save some money for some other themes that are coming out in the summer such as Star Wars, the new coast guard sets and mars mission. I'm sure I will need plenty of dough for those. Especially Star Wars... Quote

I really wanted the mach 5 because it is what the show/movie is all about, but the design just didn't seem near as good as the Racer X/Taejo set. Quote
adik_sa_lego Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 i bought both small sets but wont be getting it until next week. might try to mod the mach 5, found an inspiration in lugnet :D Quote
