Posted April 19, 20204 yr The LEGO world always seems a bit self-aware, with cities, important buildings, and natural features given names that reflect their LEGO-ness. The presence of the word "brick," "stud," or "clutch" in the name reveals that on some level, the inhabitants know what they are and what their world is made of. What other LEGO-specific terms can be used to give this nod-and-wink feel to a MOC?
April 19, 20204 yr Um.... I don't know if I follow you... but most LEGO set names (if that is truly what you are referring to)... they are meant to entice 10 year olds. I was just adding the Pharaoh's Quest sets to my LEGO collectors guide... and I was numbed by some of the "eye rolling" names they used there such as 7307 "Flying Mummy Attack".... before coming back to reality and realizing that these descriptives were for children. Now if you are referring using simple nouns and verbs to describe LEGO... then yes... that will be a snooze as far as naming MOCs go. I try to capitalize on naming MOCs in reference to historical or architectural terms for names (even modern style MOCs)... such as this MOC I built 20 years ago, based on a TLG design in a 1960 LEGO Idea Book... but I built it out into 3 dimensions, and gave it a powerful period name... I call this MOC (in honor of the LEGO founding family).... "Christiansenborg Castle... in the style of the 16th Century Scandinavian Renaissance".
April 19, 20204 yr You can use names like Travis and Rory for those in the know. Or use other names that are popular for LEGO characters (Benny and so on).
April 19, 20204 yr Author I'm not referring to official set names so much as the place-names that sometimes pop up within sets, suggesting that the people in the LEGO world know that they live in the LEGO world, and name things accordingly. Like the trail signs in the Outdoor Adventures People Pack, pointing to "LEGO City" and "Mount Clutchmore." In The LEGO Movie, the city is called Bricksburg. I'm looking for an expanded list of terms you could slip in to give that same feel of tapping on the Fourth Wall.
April 20, 20204 yr Hmm...fun topic. The only one that I could think of off the top of my head would be tubes....but not sure how that would fit into the concept. I’ll have to give this more thought.
April 21, 20204 yr Few examples: "CLUTCH ON" sticker on 75884 Mustang "AXLE BEAM" on 42050, 42109 SYSTEM ST, CLUTCH RD, TUBE SIDE AV, MOUNT CLUTCHMORE, CLUTCHMORE Elementary School, CLUTCH-DRIVE in XTRA 853921 set.
April 21, 20204 yr i always liked assembly square for this reason. it's a real place name but it also fits a building toy well.
April 23, 20204 yr Not place, but people names. There’s Clutch Powers and in the 2010 ‘Clutch Powers’ movie, there’s a character called Arthur Fol with ‘A. FOL’ on his work name badge. A self-aware reference that could be used as part of a person’s or place’s name is ‘blocks’. There’s a LEGO magazine called ‘Blocks’.
