Coder Shah Posted June 12, 2020 Author Posted June 12, 2020 Nice writeup on Hispabrick https://www.hispabrickmagazine.com/content/2020/06/12/the-new-mindstorms-is-here/ Quote
BrickWild Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 It is now possible to build the 42110 Land Rover Defender in White! Quote
JopieK Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 6x inputs/outputs, 2 more than Control+ but EV3 has four inputs and four outputs, that is two less. Rumors already said it the hub is the same as Spike (at least from the outside). Quote
GianCann Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Basically, it's the Spike Prime "Retail Edition". One more motor, one less sensor... I have no words. Quote
AVCampos Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 SPIKE's 6 bidirectional ports may be an advantage or a disadvantage over EV3's 8 unidirectional ports, depending on usage. For example, you can use more motors if you don't need many sensors, or vice-versa. Quote
Lok24 Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Just now, AVCampos said: For example, you can use more motors if you don't need many sensors, or vice-versa. At least the python version has a "motor.stalled" property, whitch may be essier to use than a user block. That could help saving sensors. Quote

AVCompos meant that you can attach max 6 items, motors or sensors does not matter anymore, where the EV3 had a limit of 4 motors and 4 sensors. Quote

He means that, instead of using a touch sensor to detect if a robot bumped into something or an arm reached the end of its range, the motor(s) involved can be checked if they're stalled (i.e. are unable to rotate). This saves on sensors, just like motors with embedded encoders saved on rotation sensors when transitioning from the RCX to the NXT. 6 minutes ago, GrandiJoos said: AVCompos meant that you can attach max 6 items, motors or sensors does not matter anymore, where the EV3 had a limit of 4 motors and 4 sensors. And the gyro in the spike hub is on 3 axes, right? That gives options! I know everyone expected an EV3++, including myself, and the 51515 is not quite that, but I'm starting to see the advantages. 6 dual ports, embedded gyro, 4 motors included (ev3 had 3 including two very large ones that only made sense in humanoids), scratch and micro python programming, ... Now I'm mainly curious how far below the retail price it will go, seeing that the Liebherr is down 20-25% I have hopes this one will go under 300€. Quote

GrandiJoos Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I read the post and news announcement a bit more carefully and this passage intrigues me: Distance sensor – detects obstacles, programmable LED ‘eyes’ and an integrated 6-pin adaptor for third-party sensors, boards and DIY hardware. Does anyone have an idea what is exactly meant here? If I interpret this correctly, does this mean that the distance sensor acts as a 'hub' to connect third party sensors to? Good to read that this is still somehow possible, looking forward to the future options... Also read early Q4 and autumn as a release date so August seems a bit optimistic. :( Quote
Philo Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 A few positive points compared to EV3, not yet mentioned: Small size Light weight Built in rechargeable battery Screen is coarse, OK, but large and visible from a distance (try that with EV3!) Quote

My Spike Prime tends to be always fully charged... Quote
Mr Hobbles Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 (edited) @Philo @Lok24 Or...just plug it in. :) It works as normal while the USB is plugged into a power block. No need to rely on battery power at all. Edited June 12, 2020 by Mr Hobbles Quote

howitzer Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 So... if I'm new to Mindstorms, should I wait for the new 51515 to be released or stick to the old one? Or maybe go for the Spike Prime? Many people here seem to think that 51515 isn't much of an improvement, but as it's not backwards compatible with EV3, investing in EV3 doesn't feel a very good idea. I've been wanting to get into Mindstorms for a long time now, but the starter sets are expensive so I'd like to make a good choice here. Quote
