I didn’t realize The Great Wave set is already released and now it’s out of stock. It looks amazing! I mean, I am a huge fan of Japanese culture, art and history myself. I must buy this one!

It’s a pure wishlist.

Since the Great Wave set was released last year, I would love to see more iconic artwork, like Mona Lisa, American Gothic (mayb not likely), Campbell soup can, The Screamer (that could. Be more complciated), and some more.

Wow this thread’s been dead.  So much so, in fact, that I forgot about it and I started it to begin with.

 I think both that and the IDEAS Starry Night have been highly successful so I hope we can see more like them as well.  Personally I’d really like some Monet water lilies.  I wonder if they might extend ‘Art’ to sculptures rather than just wall art - Rodin’s Thinker would be cool.  I’d also like Whistler’s Mother, although admittedly that’s because of Mr Bean more than anything else .  Unfortunately because it’s religious they’ll never do Da Vinci’s Last Supper though I think it would be great.

 

Having given it a name I’ll be really excited to see how the Fauna Collection expands - I really like the Macaws and they’re a great price.

Agreed, you are right that sculptures are considered as art! The Thinker gonna be a brilliant one. 

So many iconic arts out there… But agreed, De Vinci and Michangelo’s works won’t be touched. I mean, I love Italian Renaissance but most of artworks are religious. I think Monda Lisa is a safe one. 

Monet! I love htat Impressionism moveement, along with Manet. 

I would love to see more diverse arts from around the world beyond the Great Wave (only Japanese art while there are many Americanand European Art sets). Less Western arts, more Asian, African and Center/South American arts.

I'm very intrigued by the Milky Way set - I could see that one getting the Space banner seen on various other themes this year. It's probably going to be quite large too, judging by the price and piece count. I would especially love if it includes a lot of glow-in-the-dark and/or opalescent pieces!

I'll take seven. And if it doesn't come with a 4th Doctor Who fig, or the words "This is a fake" under the the painting, I'm gonna be sad. Not too surprised, but sad. (classic Dr. Who reference for the win!)

(For those who are interested, the 1979 serial featuring seven original copies of the Mona Lisa was called "The City of Death".)

 Well you will be sad for sure becuase i don’t think there will be some Doctor Who references in Monda Lisa set… Same for Starry Night Ideas set.

It actually looks surprisingly good—the shading, color blocking, and relief texture all do a great job of evoking the detail of the original even with the inherent blockiness of Lego as a medium. And it's nice to have another "fine art" set in the Lego Art theme, which can otherwise tend to be dominated by pop-culture iconography.

Starry Night, then Great Wave off Kanagawa., and now this Mona Lisa! Fine art is what I was hoping for out of Lego Art collection!

i figured Mona Lisa was the safe oen for Lego to make as it’s not a religious one from Italian Renaissance period. I wan, I love Italian Renaissance arts but most of them are religious that Lego won’t touch (ironically, they are dong Notre Dame set now). 

I am sure Da Vinci smiles as he sees his famous art ri comes into lego world! I still don’t know if ona Lisa smiles or frowns….lol.

This Joconde looks just awful! The face in particular is so ugly... they should really fire the person who designed it.

I think if you're saying something as drastic as insisting somebody be fired, you ought to put your money where your mouth is and show us your own version. Surely if you're going to be that rude about it you must be able to do better?

I think the reason pop culture and pop art works in LEGO is the reason this one does not. They have the general shape of the Mona Lisa correct and it probably cannot be bettered at this scale. Yet it, and especially the face, doesn't look right. The blockiness and narrow colour palette makes this look more like a pop art version of the original. It looks such a jumble of styles, more Picasso than da Vinci, but then it also has touches of the 'Jesus monkey'. I doubt many could do better at this scale, but then the question might be should they do it, when it doesn't look particularly good. 

I'm glad it is not a mosaic. They have become so common in LEGO form now, they are just badly pixilated images at low resolution that happen to be made from LEGO. I guess it is nice they tried to get shaping from parts, but for me, it just doesn't work so well.

Personally, I feel like this Mona Lisa looks very good. Yes, it's abstracted somewhat through the inherently blocky medium of Lego, but it's still recognizable and (IMO) attractive as an art piece. I don't really see the comparisons to Picasso or the "monkey Jesus"—to me, it reminds me more of the sort of pixelated depiction you might see in a game like Picross.

But mostly my comment was because I feel like hoping somebody loses their job over something as petty as you not liking the toy they designed is a nasty, cruel sentiment regardless of the merits of the complaint.

While it propably is a decent attempt at recreating it without resorting to prints to better capture the face/facial expression... this is fuel for nightmares.

It's like "Mona Lisa, but she looks angry because of a horrible alien growth on her forehead".

Her torso is fine, the background is fine, but the face and facial expression are just completely off, imho.
Even leaving the shape of the forehead aside - having the entire forehead elevated by one tile creates too much of a brow, which gives her eyes a mean expression that is nowhere near the soft, peaceful look she has on the original.

Im not sure why some people expect some printed pieces for Mona Lisa’s face? Is it really expnsive to print something “realistic” for Munda Lisa?

I’m with Lyichir on medium, I do not mind blockiness.

Obsessed with the Mona Lisa reveal/leak!!! I think the set looks amazing and looks really fun to build! It’s almost reminiscent of a puzzle the way the pieces fit together! So excited for that release.
