Just wondering about the name for this forum.  Having been a Technic fan since the Expert Builder series came out and have grabbed every Model Team kit as they were released I have a difficult time understanding where the conjunction between these two themes lies.  Technic has been on the more mechanical aspects of LEGO while the long-out-of-date Model Team line tried more to look more like the vehicles that were being modeled with little or no mechanical aspects.

They're both themes aimed at older demographics.

It confuses me too. A topic on a beautiful BMW i8 just got moved out to Scale Modeling, even though a case could be made it'd fall under Model Team. Perhaps someone cares to rebut that case..?

My best guess would be that all model team sets has some technic components...

I think that's true but nowadays almost every theme is using Technic elements.

Creator Expert cars/bike seem the most similar to the older Model Team to me nowadays.

Cars like the Mustang, Fiat 500, Harley Motorcycle,  mainly focus on the appearance like Model Team did.

But those are discussed under Other themes / Creator topics

The Creator Expert sets fit perfectly in the scale model forum. But this forum is nearly dead. To be honest it never really was alive.

I suppose part of the reason for having both themes on one forum is that oftentimes, fan models can be right in the middle of Model Team and Technic, and the split theme setup ought to make this no issue, because a contested model would still go on the same forum either way.

Look at it from this perspective: if you build a Technic core and cover it in Technic panels/parts it is obviously Technic, but when you cover that same Technic core with System parts it is generally not considered (pure) Technic anymore. The official Lego theme that comes closest to 'Technic core with System shell' has always been Model Team (back in the days...). In other words: it allows builders to freely mix system parts into their Technic builds and still display it over here without fear of if being 'out of forum scope'. Hence the double theme subforum.

With the scale modeling sub-forum and Creator expert sub-theme things got a bit more fuzzy though...

My impression is that "technic" spans quite a range of interests. There are people (like me) who are primarily motivated by interest in mechanisms, physics, and abstract kinetic art, and there are those who are mainly into realistic models of vehicles, with a lot of emphasis on aesthetics (and of course there are many people somewhere in between, and other variants).

Model team is a long way from the first category, but quite closely aligned with the second. While I don't have close personal interest in the realism focussed stuff, I can still appreciate it, and I don't object at all to seeing it.

I would also like to see the Model Team line come back.  Few of the model like kits since then have come close to the realism that the Model Team line reached.  Thus is especially true of the current line of Technic "supercar" vehicles.  They are far more Technic than Model Team, including the use of Technic body panels.  That's not to say they aren't all sitting on my Technic display shelves.  The Creator line is far closer to the Model Team, the 1989 Batman kits and the Aston Martin are as good as any Model Team kit ever released.  The Mustang and the Dodge, not quite as much.

I personally welcome anything 'Model Team'. I'd say it's still technic as long as there are interesting mechanisms in it. I have struggled with the 'where do I post them' question on my last couple of MOC's. I like both 'pure' technic and 'Model Team' and I think my MOC's reflect that. Besides, what about models by people like Efferman and Eric trax? We might not see them if it weren't for the 'and Model Team' heading. As mentioned in a previous post, the scale modeling forum is pretty dead.

Sure TLG have blurred the lines with the creator expert cars and many other official sets contain technic elements, but fundimetaly most people in this form look for technic mechanisms which 'Model Team' focused on alongside the aesthetics

It's a bit like music. Do you like jazz, rock, hip hop, electronic ....  No. I just like music!

Long live Model Team! 

 

 

I guess if your chassis is technic and bodywork is system then it should belong here. But if your chassis is system and your bodywork is system then it should be in scale modelling. 
But what if your chassis is system and bodywork is technic?

That is a fair question, but at least it doesn't come up much!
