LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion

Yeah, as much fun as it is when you're a kid to dream about having or building the biggest, best Lego spaceship ever, the really big ones aren't great toys. They're just too big to swoosh, crash, and rebuild. There's a reason the physical size of the playscale spaceships tops out at about eighteen inches.

Speaking of spaceship dreams, the new dual molded Concorde windscreen is just about perfect for my childhood spaceship, but I still don't think the parts library can quiiite do the ship justice yet. Wings, fuselage, tail fin, rocket engines, and now windscreen, yes. But I still haven't figured out how to do that tapering nose cone at a satisfactory play scale.

But that's neither here nor there. Sorry for getting off topic from 2024 sci fi sets!

I actually prefer the smaller sets. Large sets feel like a burden to me because there's so many pieces to keep track of and it's a very long process to rebuild them. And when it comes to spaceships, smaller ones are more fun to play with. I think the Lightyear ship might be the best spaceship they've ever released. I would love to see them put that kind of effort into a whole wave of original space sets.

I think both big and medium sized Sets have their charm - bigger might just be harder to design than the medium sized ones. The XL 15 is my favourite Lego space ship so far too. I just love that design.

I also love the tiny sets. The Benny's Space Squad vehicles were great.

That Set certainly had it´s charm, alone for the minifigs and also for the classic vehicles - they are very retro. But honestly, while they have their charm as retro-vehicles, I don´t really think they are looking good and would be expecting a way better design from nowadays sets.

Lego has just started to do unlicensed space sets again. We got the Galaxy Explorer and next year we will hopefully get the Blacktron Ship

Yep, and it's almost 2024, now go back 5 years and in 2019 we had Benny's Space squad.

Hopefully they make more Space sets going forward but I'm not counting chickens before they hatch.

The colours aren't exciting on these, but I might be in a minority for wanting Coral and Neon Yellow.

But I LOVE

Chris Foss designs. I have a portfolio collection of his artwork, the Terran Trade Authority books and a weakness for weird SciFi paperbacks.

So, of course, I plan and build weird shapes with strange colours.

That looks more like the new reddish orange than it does coral - I wonder how the colour will look alongside neon yellow. 🤔

It looks like the SPACE banner is being used across themes (not just for City) - Interesting!

Technic Space sets are starting to show up on Instagram in high resolution. They have the same Space banner as the leaked City sets. I wonder if the rumored Icons and Friends spaceships will also have that banner. If so, that's smart cross-theme branding.

I expect so, along with the Space CMF.

And perhaps the 3-in-1 31152: Astronaut in Space set as well (price and piece count very similar to the buildable minifig set) , so maybe it's an actual buildable figure with a spacesuit .

The concept of a 3-in-1 astronaut actually was done this very year with 31134: Space Shuttle having an astronaut as it's alternate build, but at smaller 144 piece scale, and not 650 pieces.

And there's also this space themed Classic 11037: Creative Space Planets.

All seems to make sense with 2024 / 2025 being years of Artemis 2 and 3 missions, and if succesful, the first manned moon landing since 1972. (and due to delays, LEGO might have been planning this ahead)

Oh man. All of these Technic space sets are great. I saw the rover and the orrery a little bit ago after icm mentioned they were on Instagram. I don't have an Instagram account, so I could only see the top few posts, and it just showed those two sets. Now they've been officially announced.

I love the gray tires. Everything about these sets is so cool. I think this is the most excited I've been for a space set since UFO. Alien Conquest had some cool stuff, but I think this is better. I'll have to buy all of these.

I showed the orrery to my son before he went to bed. A little while later, I walked into his room and he was building an orrery out of Duplos with the lights turned on. :pir-laugh:

I just saw the Technic sets a couple hours ago and they all look awesome. Unless I'm mistaken, aside from the Perseverance rover, we haven't gotten much Technic Space before. I remember being really surprised when the set names first leaked. The orrery is right up there with the dropship as my favorites so far. Out of the 4, I'll most likely get the orrery, dropship, and small rover. The larger rover is cool, but perhaps a bit too big for my shelf space and kinda "bland" compared to the others. Ugh, I can't stop thinking about that dropship, it is the right amount of futuristic scifi for me :pir-love:. Next year is going to be hard on the wallet for sure but as a space lover I know it's feast or famine.

It's not just that particular ship, I mean the artist has a lot of brightly coloured work. That one was just an example.

Space is going to be a massive focus for LEGO in 2024, and we can see some of it here, with 4 out-of-this-world LEGO Technic sets that look futuristic and unlike anything we’ve seen before from Technic, which has traditionally been very rooted in reality.

Looks like sci-fi to me.

It might get lost among the actual new space-related sets in the Technic theme, but there's a new 1x2 tile with a cut corner in Speed Champions (used for various sets) and in the BMW set it appears in trans-yellow for headlights and trans-red for taillights! Could be useful for Space MOCs, especially microscale ones.

I have lots of thoughts after seeing the Technic sets.

  • I like the small rover and the VTOL designs. They seem more interesting and futuristic than the city designs we've seen, IMO.
  • The white, new orange, and trans black windscreen scheme is pretty cool. I wish the city spaceship that leaked had more of the new orange and had a trans black windscreen (it appears to be trans clear but hard to tell from the pics).
  • I like the purple & blue space background from the promo pics with the kids playing. Why couldn't that be incorporated into the Space banner background?
  • Pretty wild that we're getting the cross-theme Space branding. I wonder if we'll see the same branding in Creator, Friends, or even Ninjago?
  • The cross branding is another reason they should have come up with a better Space banner.
  • It's bitter sweet that Space has no home of its own and has to live in other themes.
  • I really have no hope of getting anything in 2024 that is similar to traditional/Classic Space themes. Everything so far has gone the Artemis/NASA concept route.

With high-res pics of the Space banner, I don't mind it as much. There's some nice bluish-purplish outlining on the lettering, the letters themselves aren't quite as boring as they looked before, and the background is more of a silvery color than a plain boring gray.

I wouldn't call the VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship something from the Artemis/NASA concept route. It looks more like the aesthetic of the Alien universe or any number of video games. It's not my style, but I'm glad Technic is doing something new and unusual and conceptually creative.

The smaller rover with four wheels is a really cool upscaled Technic version of the old Life on Mars and Mars Mission three-wheeled rovers.

The big rover with six wheels is a really cool "Watney rover" with a good amount of functions and some nice interior and exterior detail. However, it's clearly going for form over function - the mechanical functionality is simple and limited.

I can't wait for pictures of the Space sets from City, Creator, and Friends. I hope they come out by tomorrow.

I'm actually finding the opposite. Specifically, I dislike the font more, and I also don't like the wide kerning.

The more perceptive among us will see what's wrong with this 'c':

Hmm yeah I think you're right. That one is especially sci-fi. And yeah, nice to see that sort of thing in Technic.

I do have hope. So far we still know of two Space Sets coming under the Icons Licence - at least the Moments one should be similar to traditional space - since the other is only known that it is space, it might aswell be Nasa though. And actually with that many space this year I would be really surpised if we wouldn´t get a retro space gwp aswell.

As for the technic sets, I really like the spaceship. Actually would be great if the city sets would look more like that one.

I know right? It's my fave of what's been revealed so far but I don't generally buy Technic.

I think I will buy my first 3 LEGO Technic -sets. Looks sci-fi and I am a big fan of movie The Martian. Where is Matt Damon. I really hope that we get something similar LEGO City / Space -sets and minifigures.

Not surprising but the Creator Set also has the Space Logo. Only have seen a pic of the box so the alternative builds pictures are quite small but the spaceship you can build looks quite good IMO.
