The LEGO.com "Play Zone" page for 60434 refers to them as "new crystal-botanic batteries", and in this image you can see both a computer screen showing how the batteries are made using alien plant life and crystals, and a machine being used for that purpose.

The pages for other sets like 60430 and 60431 refer simply to "power-generating energy crystals", so it's possible that the purple fuel cells are weaker ones that use the crystals alone for power, while the pink ones are stronger fuel cells that also incorporate organic compounds from the alien plant life. Alternatively, the different colors may simply indicate whether the batteries have a full or partial charge.

The batteries on the space station all appear to be pink.
Since the screen in the 4+ set shows a crystal directly powering a battery (and the set only includes purple batteries), while the one in the base shows the combination of crystals and plants (with pink on the display and a pink battery being created/studied in the lab), I am assuming that purple are crystal-only batteries and that pink are the crystal-botanic batteries.

I was just looking at some more images of the City range, and here is my current understanding of the spacesuit colors:

  • Warm Gold: Admiral (this one is confirmed in 60434's Play Zone page linked above)
  • Earth Blue: Blue team leader. She has a face tattoo of a constellation.
    • Dark Azur: Blue team crew and robots. This team seems to be made up of scouts, explorers, and pilots.
  • Earth Green: Green team leader. They have a scanner or microcomputer of some kind over one eye.
    • Bright Green: Green team crew and robots. This team seems to be focused on scientific research work (like geology, botany, chemistry, and xenobiology).
  • Dark Orange: Orange team leader. He has a face tattoo of a lightning bolt.
    • Flame Yellowish Orange: Orange team crew and robots. This team seems to be focused on mining, construction, and repair work.

There are also four unique members of each team (not counting the leaders), and no head overlap between teams.

I would like to know what is the story behind this purple crystal. You can mine violet crystals and collect purple plants BUT what about that mega crystal.

"Join the space crew on their search for a super crystal with enough energy to power the entire space base"

Since crystal-botanic batteries are still being researched/manufactured (and all of the vehicles use purple batteries), they seem to be a new development. The super crystal is surrounded by plant life, so perhaps it is some kind of naturally-occurring crystal-botanic battery, and this is how the team discovers that plants and crystals can be combined to make more powerful batteries? 🤔

Great points! Thank you all.

What about this LEGO Friends set... it is in Mars... also we have LEGO Technic set Mars Crew Exploration Rover... BUT where are the crystals? Aliens are bit different... is it still the same universe?

The alien is the same species as in the City sets, as this figure in this is reused in the City Space 4+ set. Considering that the alien is arriving at the Friends base on Mars via a meteorite, however, the City sets are in a different part of the solar system (as the aliens seem to be native to wherever the City astronauts are).

Good point once again.

Actually when we look LEGO CITY/Space sets as whole ... we can say that those characters, vehicles, bases are very advanced. Way more advanced even than in NASA concept images. AND they have discovered a way to make "power" for the BASE from super crystal and for vehicles other "power source" plants, crystals, combination of those two.

Leg print, that red marking and red triangle is same than in LEGO CITY/Space sets from 2022. It might be that those characters took Moon for them and some of them continued to Mars. BUT now this "theme" is actually further away in time. It is planet where asteroids are near, there are holes full of purple light, friendly aliens which I like a lot, violet crystals, purple plants, even super crystal... also some of the minifigures have advanced technology attached to their heads.

I am like a small child. This all is a DREAM come TRUE! This feels like almost own space theme.

I think these City sets fit well with the 2019 series. Where as the 2022 series does not with either that well. Im glad that I skipped those.

But I might do a color swap with 2022 and use some things with the 2019/2024 sets.

I might do a color swap with the Friends set to match the new sets.

You still have a plent of time… next Christmas then!

I also would need to wait until next Christmas ( but with a $100 budget.)

While the product pictures of the City 60406: Race Car and Car Carrier Truck , make it seem the truck headlights could be Trans-Neon Green (same as 41946: Extra DOTS - Series 6), I wonder if it ends up being just regular trans-yellow.

However, 2023 sets still did have the neon colour, like the lightsaber in 40658: Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama

If the color is not "dead" it could still mean LEGO can tap into M-tron or Blacktron 2 etc at some point (M-tron probably easier to reproduce with existing moulds, but no magnets, while Blacktron 2, misses quite crucial shapes like the 8 sided windows, which would not look the same if bubble canopy would be used, altho an aproximate 8 sided shape is seen in the City Space Base control tower, so perhaps that's the better alternative)

It looks like trans-yellow in other shots. 🫤

I start to understand how big this thing is. Space is everywhere...

Kids when they see stars in the sky for the first time

Yes! They just show those Technic space sets, all 3, close... with designers. I will buy also those all.

Thanks for posting that link, very interesting!  Actually, I think that Friends space set is more appealing than most of the City and Technic sets to me.  The kitty in a space suit is adorable, and is a must have for my 6 year old.  I’m sure I’ll be getting that set.  Might buy one or two of the City sets, but will pass on the Technic sets.

Nice to hear.

We might see even more Space sets in different themes. Dreamzzz is another one which makes things a little bit different than CITY/Space. Technic makes a bit different and  Friends. Even the CMF serie is full of all kind of characters. VERY interesting year coming 2024.

Please WATCH this episode. (LORE)

I know a lot of people are probably saving up for the massive wave of Space sets, but if anyone is looking to get something else before the end of the year and hasn't gotten last year's Monkie Kid's Galactic Explorer set, I wouldn't sleep on it. It's currently 30% off on Lego.com and is an amazing spaceship set with some very nice colored windscreens.

I am waiting next monday. 1.1.2024. Then I will buy whole theme.

It worked for me. I think he's talking about this shot:

Not a peep about the Icons/Moments black spaceship in quite a while. Hmm.

Its a Black(ops)Tron operation...

YES! That is the image I was looking for.

. . . . . Well don't be angry BUT it is highly possible that we won't see so called "black spaceship" this year. LEGO tries to look in the future - AND it very much seems that LEGO CITY/Space is the thing. City subtheme are a very high level.

- Space

- Exploration (Arctic, Deep Sea, Jungle)

- Police (lego C.S.I. + Alcatraz in 2024)

It might be that LEGO CITY/Space subtheme is our SPACE now and in the future. Good thing is that it is very high quality like other City subthemes above. BUT it is not own Space theme. And that might be because of Star Wars.

Do you have a source, or is this just your speculation?

Don't get me wrong. We got 90th ANNIVERSARY set. Other was Galaxy Explorer and the other Lion Knights' Castle. THEN we got 2 GWP's Blactron Cruiser and Forrest Hideout.

Ok! If you think those 4 set as an own thing. 90 years of LEGO thing - then that so called "Black Spaceship" could delay, be even CANCELLED! Which theme it is? Which subtheme it is? Is it the Moments set? What is Moments? Don't get me wrong - I really hope we get space sets as many as possible.

LEGO puts 100 % Space subtheme in 2024. That means also that this Black Spaceship won't get that much resources. Also I really hope it is not a Blacktron 1 ship because that colour scheme of the faction is not good. It is the colours of German flag. Very UGLY colour scheme. (Germans are amazing, their flag should be changed). Blacktron 2 is my favourite faction BUT this new (2022) and now (2024) is probably even greater.
