January 15, 20241 yr YES! But now things take time to change because Star Wars. Have you heard the latest NEWS... TLG might know this. That SW is going slowly but steadily down. (TLG own space theme could be a cure for that).

Sorry to drop in here like this, but whatever you think about the quality of the recent star wars content, the sales of star wars legos are still pretty high. Lego's not abandoning that cash cow anytime soon. That doesn't mean that TLG can't have their own space theme, though. So long as it's not too similar to star wars, they can coexist without cannibalizing eachother. Brightly colored ships with a different aesthetic, a focus on other aspects than combat (though I'm sure there's ways to make a combat-oriented space theme that doesn't feel like it's aping star wars), etc.

SW is a massive commercial property in the U.S., and I suspect in other parts of the world. Even with some short term downward trend in sales, it comes back up with the next series. Even then, it doesn't take new content to keep the franchising going when it's as large as it is now. Let's not forget that Lego licensing SW was one factor that saved the company from bankruptcy in the early 2000s. There's not doubt at this point that Lego knows what sells (unlike the late 1990's early 2000s). With just the sheer number and variety of sets, it's clear SW sells. In fact, strong SW sales will help Lego do things that are less profitable. It's probably obvious that without SW sets, Lego would be no where near the size of company it is today. Lego's financial size and health is what has let it introduce new themes and try new things like the crosscutting Space theme we are seeing this year. The only question is whether the Space theme will be multi-year, or if there will be a new crosscutting theme each year. I have no expectation that Space will come back as its own theme like 1978.
January 15, 20241 yr I have to agree with Space here. While without Star Wars we would obviously have more production space for other Sets, it wouldn´t mean we would get other space sets. Likely they would rather try other licenses. And we really shouldn´t underestimate the role Sgtar Wars plays for Lego and that not only financially. In the end Star Wars IMO is one of the main things that helped Lego getting popular and accepted by Adults.

However, you make a point on SW sales as of 2020s.

Well... yes BUT then they would have other possibilities. At the moment people will buy sets they see in stores. If you go and look the product line in BIGGER store... mmm... I see: Friends, City, Minecraft, Technic... some Harry Potter and Jurassic Franchise,,, and all kids go!!! WOW! AND yes there is also those boring SW sets - also over priced. BUT huge difference at the moment (2024) is that there are some 1-5 CITY/Space sets, and maybe, only maybe they will sell well. And then maybe, we have 10-15 % change to get 2-3 sets more and that was our space wave. Still I think this whole thing (CITY/Space) is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

This may be something specific to Finland, or maybe just one store near you, but the majority of stores that sell LEGO anywhere I've been in the US or the UK have a wide selection. If it's a really small store (or, more likely a small LEGO selection in a non-specialist store), then you are most likely to get a Creator, City, and Friends set, and then if there is a fourth, probably Disney princess. I don't recognize your characterization of most stores selling only LEGO Star Wars. I have to say, it really does feel a like a bit of a broken record at the moment. I love the enthusiasm, but you keep making the same point over and over, and not moving the discussion on. I say this not to be negative, but that you may not be aware how your posts seem to come across. That in turn may be because of language, and I'd hate to pick on that. Again, not trying to be critical, and I love your enthusiasm and passion for LEGO.
January 16, 20241 yr Well I meant there are many stores which sell many themes. BUT most of the stores, there are these main themes in BEST place in self. Kids will have a bit hard to find SPACE sets from stores. EVEN they are under LEGO CITY. That is not good for space fans. ... Well I repeat myself BECAUSE like you see... SW makes 40 sets a year. We don't get that much COOL "sci-fi" sets. We get Marvel and SW. Are those sets good quality, well boring at least, some of them are fine. For example ... This is SCI-FI for me. They are trying to find meteorites under sea? Under ICE? And what are inside of those "stones" from space. I hope we get LEGO sci-fi sets and it means that we really have to buy all those space sets. Sorry to say this!
January 16, 20241 yr Arctic is not ScFi? That is certainly a lot more like Town/City and actual modern day operations by polar scientists. In other discussion: Got to the LEGO store yesterday, currently displays were geared to the upcoming Valentine's day so most of the built models were the floral sets. But there was a lovely selection of the space sets to choose from. I wonder if this new space push will result in some Build-a-Minifig parts and PaB pick'n'build to choose from? That would be nice and worth the visit in the future.
January 16, 20241 yr I absolutely love the old Arctic sets, but they are certainly closer to the real world (and a better fit for the Town/City themes) than this current crop of Space sets. Personally I wouldn't describe them as sci-fi. Some of the stores in my area didn't get the new sets in until the second week of the year, but nonetheless they didn't seem to be any more or less prominent than other sets or themes. I will say that when I visited a LEGO store in the UK at the start of the year, the Space sets did seem to be popular with the kids (I had to wait my turn to be able to grab one!). This is the target demographic for LEGO, after all, so that gives me hope we'll get a second wave at least.
January 16, 20241 yr The closest the old arctic had to current sci-fi is that it has those transparent meteors with neon spiders in them. I mean, we still see an Alien in a boulder in 2024. Otherwise, it's pretty much just Town's version of Arctic, 2014 Arctic continued the Polar Bears and Boulders, while 2018 Arctic was more about animals (which makes sense as 2016 Volcano and 2018 Miners pretty much covered the boulder/mining parts) The vehicles did look a little space-ish in 2000 Arctic but not unusual, just many vehicles in Town used space shaped windows , even long before town junior, in the early / mid 90s vehicles used those : Edited January 16, 20241 yr by TeriXeri
January 16, 20241 yr Well if we are beeing honest he didn´t wrote this is Sci-Fi, but it would be Sci-Fi for him, and he even explained what he meant with that. In the end Sci-Fi doesn´t always have to play in space and if they are searching the polar region for meteorids in his scifi-world, then why not. Let them find some Alien ship and you already would have an Sci-Fi-Movie ;). Additional to that, if we take the above picture, take the icebear away and add an landing place with an spaceship that could aswell play on an different planet with similar atmosphere to earth ;).
January 16, 20241 yr 2018 Arctic subtheme does have “liviing” prehistoric creatures (saber-toothed tiger and woolly mammoth) so that subtheme is not exactly sci-fi but not realistic neither. Like kids can revive those prehistoric animals with scientists’ help in their own imaginations. Obivously, prehistoric animals are found dead as ice melts in our reality. Neither sci-fi nor realistic. Just imaginative.
January 16, 20241 yr If you look image closely... from space there comes asteroids... ACTUALLY those space stones went under WATER and under ICE. Reason: Arctic and Deep Sea Explorers... NOW under LEGO CITY/Exploration. Look closely what they found inside asteroids. YES!! Space crystal. Where do you see space crystal 2024? exactly... And like to 1 guy said... what about animals which are related with dinosaurs like T-Rex or Triceratops... and so on. Sci-fi is complex thing. It does not mean SPACE = sci-fi.
January 16, 20241 yr You guys say Arctic isn't Sci-Fi but wait until you see the Arctic Drill Mech and the Seal Rescue Hover-ski.
January 16, 20241 yr Could people use the report function and not confront others in the thread? That way staff can come in and tidy up. @legoturtle you need to keep away from those subjects. It is bad enough you hold them personally without you broadcasting them on an unrelated site. If you find you can't resist it, you will find you can't continue on the forum. Benefit of the doubt is being eroded by all these issues you are creating.
January 16, 20241 yr What is the problem... this is a sci-fi topic and arctic is SOFT sci-fi theme. Simple as that. LIKE CITY/Space at the moment... - ok, BUT good news, now we know release date "black spaceship" and also we get SpaceX rocket, is that sci-fi then...!?
