Dragonator Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 With the games becoming so popular, it is becoming hard for hosts to figure out how to chose players. I like the idea of a host including both experienced players and also choosing a couple of new people as well to balance things. As another idea, what if we had two pools, with a "junior" and "senior" pool? Then new people could come into the junior pool, which would be based around teaching new people to play and involving them in basic yet still interesting games, and then work their way into the senior pool, which is for more experienced players with a wider variety and style of games. Or is that making things to complicated. I'm not sure if we would have quite enough interest for this idea though, so maybe not. Also it is nice for the new players to play alongside more experienced players. OK, trash that idea, it was silly anyway. I don't know, I just like playing the games. They are very fun, and we should be looking to encourage new people to play who are willing. Perhaps we should just leave it to a case by case basis, depending on what interest there is in each game?
Darth_Legois Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 OR We could go back to the old "First come, first server" thing. But timezones suck.
Adam Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 In complete contrast to the ratio discussion, I bring the news of a mafia game I'll actually have time to host, for once: As the name implies, I plan to host a mafia game based on the hit FOX TV show 24 in mid-May (or when one of the new games ends), one that occurs in the course of 24 hours - meaning that the first "day" becomes the first "hour," which can be at any point in the day, and that the images will be told from multiple points of view. I plan on sending a PM explaining the rules with a backstory to Hinckley tomorrow. Going along with the above discussion, I also plan on putting in place a sort of ratio system. The idea is to have two groups about the same size, one of experienced veterans and one with players new to Mafia games in general. I've decided that the best idea is to make the veteran group larger than the group of novices, so that they have multiple seasoned players to teach them how to play. As another idea, what if we had two pools, with a "junior" and "senior" pool? Then new people could come into the junior pool, which would be based around teaching new people to play and involving them in basic yet still interesting games, and then work their way into the senior pool, which is for more experienced players with a wider variety and style of games. This is what I mean about the player ratio, Dragonator voiced it perfectly. Perhaps we should just leave it to a case by case basis, depending on what interest there is in each game? I also agree with this theory - I don't think any unenthusiastic volunteers would be interested or active in the game.
Hinckley Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I plan to host a mafia game based on the hit FOX TV show 24 in mid-May (or when one of the new games ends), No, you'll take a place in line like everybody else...
Trexxen Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I agree with the idea of having two pools. It works on other sites (Mafiascum, for instance, plays similarly), and it's become obvious that there's enough demand for that. Also, would this index work for discussing tactics, hosting techniques, etc.? Or should there be a discussion for that, and only talk about future games and how to run them here? ~Trexxen

Adam Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 No, you'll take a place in line like everybody else... I thought games were scheduled by suggesting a general month you could host in, then working around the other times? Oh well, whatever you say.
Hinckley Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I thought games were scheduled by suggesting a general month you could host in, then working around the other times? Oh well, whatever you say. Seems to me like someone is clearly listed in mid-May...
Adam Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Seems to me like someone is clearly listed in mid-May... Woops! I must be going blind...
Ricecracker Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Woops! I must be going blind... Then why are you the lookout boy?
Hinckley Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Looks like I forgot to add Darth Legois to the list. He will go before Adam. Now I just need to remember to edit that in.
Shadows Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Looks like I forgot to add Darth Legois to the list. He will go before Adam. Now I just need to remember to edit that in. Added. He asked for a date in 2010, but I went ahead and put him after Dragonator (August 2009) and before Adam. If it gets there and he isn't ready, he can always be moved to January 2010.

Dragonator Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 I am about to begin preparatory work for my upcoming annual game in August, and I am thinking of a name change. Yes, this may come as a terrible and heart-breaking blow to those of you who participated last time, but with the rise in Mystery games on the forum, I thought it might be better to change it so as not to confuse anyone, for the name "Mystery Castle" does imply Mystery, rather than Mafia. For those people who loved the acronym though, it will stay the same. I have decided that rather than " Mystery Castle II", my next game shall instead be called "Mystical Castle". So, what do you think, does this sound like a good change? Or do you hate it, and if so, do you have a better suggestion? I've never been that great with naming things. (Hinck, if you could change this in the first post that would be much appreciated. )
Stash2Sixx Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Actually, I think Mystical Castle is a great name. Not only does it give you the ability to create your Mafia game in a setting similar to Mystery Castle, but now you have the option to incorporate in a fantasy sense, if you want. New powers for players, new skill sets, new abilities.....Good Call! I like it and would be VERY interested!

Also I doubt I'll be ready by August seeing as I need a new camera. But we'll see....
JimBee Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 OR We could go back to the old "First come, first server" thing. But timezones suck. I agree. The first-come-first-serve has usually worked well in the past. I don't like the idea of the host picking the players, because the decision is most likely going to be biased towards experienced players. Zepher Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Here's my promo. I'm hoping sign ups will start June 11th. I'll be picking players by past experience, and by applications, just as The Brickster did. I'm really hoping that the time chart will work out that way. I'm thinking that the game will start on like June 25th. Hopefully. I'm also hoping that The Brickster's game will be far enough in that I can start this then. Hosting a game would not be easy for me during the school year, so the summer two monthes would be perfect.
Hinckley Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 so the summer two monthes would be perfect. I think you should take Summer school... I hope it works out that way too. Lots of games going on makes me think we should reconsider how we schedule these. Probably shouldn't have so many going at once. *passive aggressive mode on* Especially ones that are so slow between days...
Zepher Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I agree. The Brickster just went ahead with his game without scheduling it, which is a tad unfair, but since the other games are slow, he seems to be getting away with it, simply by being active. As for summer schoo, I may end up doing that. I'm trying to fit more things into my schedule than I can.
Hinckley Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 As for summer schoo, I may end up doing that. Yes, you should definitely stay in schoo.
Zepher Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I caught my mistake, but figured it would be funnier to leave it.
Luke McAwesome Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 (edited) I'd like to do a sort of treasure hunting/mystery game, like with the "good guy" characters and the "bad guy" characters trying to find it. But I don't know how this whole thing works. Would someone mind explaining how this works? I'm not patient enough to read through all this. Edited May 22, 2009 by Striker™

But I don't know how this whole thing works. Would someone mind explaining how this works? I'm not patient enough to read through all this. It's here to be read and the explanation is quite clear in the first post. And members will probably not be allowed to run games on their own in the future. They will require a staff assistant, at least. I would especially be weary of a member who can't bother to read up about how the games work on his/her own...

Hehe, oh well, you're right, Hinckley, sorry 'bout that. However, are those the same rules for the "mystery" version of these games? "Townies" and "Scum"? Edited May 22, 2009 by Striker™
