Jim Posted November 13, 2015 Author Posted November 13, 2015 Please tell me if this is the wrong place to ask: When I connect the pneumatic pump (rotates using a motor) to a switch and a valve, after few rotations one hose blows! What should I do to absorb the potential extra pressure of the pump when air has no way to escape? I know from 42008 that this should not happen but couldn't figure out how. This topic is ok, but there's also a dedicated Pneumatic General Discussion topic. I have added it to the Index. Quote
Samer Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 (edited) Have you tried a different hose? Perhaps that blown hose didn't have the same amount of grip as the other ones. Or there is grease or dirt on the connection. No dirt everything is fine, but few hoses come from very old set, I'll check if I isolate them. After isolating the old set hoses (from set 8462@1998), the problem seems gone, thanks for the hint. This topic is ok, but there's also a dedicated Pneumatic General Discussion topic. I have added it to the Index. Yes, I saw that too late, sorry. If the conversation is moveable there, please do. Edited November 13, 2015 by Samer Quote
Samer Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I notice in the reviews page most sets say "review needed". Is that current or out of date? Quote
Saberwing40k Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 It's probably current. If you have the sets and boxes and stuff, you might be able to change that. Start gripe. I'm still fuming a little bit over not being able to enter the Lego Mercedes truck of the future competition, which was partially due to the fact that they ended the competition at noon rather than midnight, which is literally what everyone else does. Also, I feel like they picked the ugliest entry. I'm not saying that mine would have done better, but there were several more worthy entries. and, I'm disappointed that there are not Technic competitions more often. Also, the new parts for 42043 are still not available on the parts site. However, I was able to score a used 8275 for a reasonable price, i just forgot to use a coupon on it. End gripe. Quote
Rishab N Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Just wondering what are your opinions on the 8285 Tow Truck? I got interested in this set recently. Is it a good set and is it worth paying extra for the metallic version? Quote
zux Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 8285 is a tricky one. This set has multiple variations. Wheels only have three varieties: 10 metallic wheels, 6 metallic + 4 LBG, and 10 LBG. Having all 10 metallic wheels doesn't guarantee all other parts will be metallic, as my copy had LBG connectors used for exhaust. So if you are looking for full metallic version - keep your eyes open and check pictures if required parts are in desired colour. Quote
bonox Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 if you want to play with it, go with anything you can find. If you want to collect, the metallics were the originals of the run and probably a little harder to get hold of, but have slight value addition because of that. A lot of sellers (particular those not on bricklink) won't have any idea about the differences and the prices tend to be similar for all types. I like it as a play set, but it's capacity is pretty limited without bending parts. While I generally prefer manual models (ie not remote control, manual pneumatic pump instead of compressor), dikkie klijns blue american wrecker is much more fun to play with and look at in my opinion, and cheaper and simpler to build than andrea grazi's version of the 5571. If you want cheap(er) and a TLG set rather than a MOC, the 8285 is certainly a set with presence! Quote

Is it a good set and is it worth paying extra for the metallic version? 8285 was and still is my holy grail...took me several months but i gathered all the prts save for a small handful in brand new condition. it is a stunning set, the best set ever released imo....the build experience is amazing. i do recomend you try get the metallic silver version, alot of those parts can now be found in brand new condition save for the 4x4 radar dishes and the 75535 parts...all the other metallic silver stuff can be found brand new condition and cheaply. you always see sets second hand pop up on ebay, it seems to be a very common set....i guess it sold a ton of copies during its sales period. Moz Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 - 8285 ... you always see sets second hand pop up on ebay, it seems to be a very common set....i guess it sold a ton of copies during its sales period. It was also available at a decent discount for a while, I bought 4 copies from a German Bricklink seller for a lot less than they were retailing here, helped by the 50E/30kg shipping that German post offers (and, conveniently, the $AUS was up against the euro too). It's also a nice set purely as parts, although I also bought a bunch of 8043 because you couldn't beat that set for power functions. Then I built a ridiculous road train :) Quote

You can look for the parts/condition/price you want. Quote
Richard Dower Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) 43898 is a common part now, several sets from recent years have them: http://www.bricklink...colorID=67&in=A 4073 is very easy to get...loads of them on Bricklink and Ebay in Metallic Silver, same with 2412b: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=4073&colorID=67&in=A as an alternative to the eight rare 75535 parts you could use the more recent 62462 in Metallic Silver: http://www.bricklink...colorID=67&in=A the handle bar i got from 8642...they pop up on ebay all the time: http://alpha.brickli...8642-1#T=S&O={} the metallic silver wheel hubs....there are quite a few avialble via Bricklink and ebay, save a search as they routinely pop up. the hardest part is the 3960 4x4 radar dishes....crazy expensive, as such you might have to go with LBG. here is what i did.....i bought a second hand set cheap off a local buy and sell, the guy had no clue about its value. i dumped pretty much everything save for the pnrumatic stuff and metallic silver parts, the parts i dumped i sold as a lot so got some money back. i cleaned everything, then i bought as many of the parts brand new as i could find....95% of parts are very common and widely used today....there is just alot of them. for example i has to get 28 Red and 32 Black 1x15's! zux Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Yeah, there rest of the pieces are quite available now, but not the wheels and 4*4 dishes. That's why I've asked for cheap wheels, as you mentioned metallic pieces are now easy to get for cheap, which wasn't really true. Quote

Epic Technic Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Has anyone one ever built a working 3 axis gimbal out of lego? I wanted to record stable videos and thought that the gyro sensor for the ev3 coul see help make a good gimbal. Quote
BusterHaus Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 (edited) Has anyone one ever built a working 3 axis gimbal out of lego? I wanted to record stable videos and thought that the gyro sensor for the ev3 coul see help make a good gimbal. That would be a very heavy stabilizer. The EV3 brick with the motors already weighs quite a bit, and you need to add all the connecting bricks to it. Mounting it on a MOC will be difficult. Also, the motors are noisy, which will be a problem if you need the audio track from the camera. For hand held shots, a purely mechanical solution is a much easier way to stabilize your videos. It all boils down to a weight suspended below a camera (you can actually do it in reverse, too, for low angle shots). There are lots of examples on YouTube.
