Hello there,

I am a newly registered user, though reading the forum for about a month. I am back to Technic for about the same time now (and it started because of my soon-to-be-3-years-old son) and my first purchase was the crawler crane 42042. Since then, I bought few used sets: 8069, 8049 (fantastic B-model), 8455 and 8297. Recently I managed to pick a box full of Technic (it turned out to have tons of classic bricks too) with 8480, 8485 and 8837 (plus some other unidentified sets).

I am the most excited for 8480 and 8485 but it will be a while before they are built. The parts came from smoking/very smelly and sunny house so all white bits are yellow/brown now (hydrogen peroxide is on its way) and 9V wires require new cabling. Would you happen to know what specification a substitute cable should have (NB: Euro specs please )?

Have you come across some interesting MOCs that utilize the control center from 8485?

Make something you haven't made yet.

Think of a set you liked, and do a better job.

Make something unlikely.

I don't want to ignite a purist vs non-purist debate, but I would like to get some opinions on using a third party string in a C-model for a set that doesn't have a string. Would you still consider it a real C-model? What if it was a non-Lego rubber band?

I'm still trying to come up with a mechanical solution to replace the string, but I'm curious what you guys think.

As a non-purist, I don't see any problem using third party stuff, and if it's similar to the part it replaces, like string, I say go for it.

Adding string when the set does not have any string, that's something else. Adding something that didn't come with the set in the first place, I would say that makes it more of a mod than a C-model, as I think a C-model is regarded as strictly using the parts within the set and nothing additional.

I usually do as I please though, I'm not really one to give a good answer.

Adding string to a non string set would not make it a C model but a MOC :)

I think you summed it up very well. I'll be skipping the string.

At this point I would like to make a contrary mention of set 6753 - which includes a string,hook and reel that are not used in the A model, but included solely for the sake of functionality in the B and C models - and add that even LEGO cheats sometimes :B

the string and hook still came in the set though. You can't exactly call something a C model, and expect someone to be able to build it if all of the required parts are not available in the set(s) you're calling out.

Where it gets tricky is what do you call a model that relies on multiple sets like nathaniel kuipers excellent supercar mods of the off roader and f1 combined. What do TLG call the equivalent truck made out of the two 42000 series cars?

so with that in mind buster, you could always incorporate an extra set with string and go for broke with the extra parts :)

If the part or item wasn't packaged by LEGO with the set, then it isn't completely a pure C model of that set. C models are basically alternative (alt) builds of a set.

Mixing sets would be analogous to what we call "kit bashing" in the model railroad hobby world. Taking parts from several different model kits and making a new model out of them.

Lego has combined two Technic pullback sets into a B model for two or three years. They're small sets, so it makes sense.

I wasn't sure about the third party string because it's an item that can be found in most households and is not expensive (as opposed to third party items like RC tires, or the SBrick).

In any case, I've abandoned the idea of using a string as it doesn't come with the set.

Not really, if it is a C model or a MOC should make no difference. The OP asked a question which was answered.

i got 2 sets of 8458 off Ebay for the Silver Champion as i wanted to build both the A and B model, that racing truck looks super cool!

i pad €87 for one of them but it had a few panels missing, luckily other sellers had the panels i needed. the A model second hand was €133 shipped.

like always i plan to get as many new parts as possible and have the models as close to as new as possible.

8448 had alot of parts like liftarms that i already had in my parts bags, i will wash everything and get to building :-)
