January 16, 20214 yr So, I ended pulling the magenta piece that was getting obstructed and replaced it with a spacer and it works now.

And 2 pages in this thread just for one piece (now I understand why there is this colour "vomit" approach from Lego). Perhaps there should be some topic like 42114 problems and all those topics dealing with this set merged inside this one topic; what you you think @Milan? I know it is lots of work, but some of us dopes who do not have this set see several topics about more or less the same things...
January 17, 20214 yr Well, after calling Lego Customer service we determined something was wrong with their build or the motor. We did it correctly. The Magenta piece has no purpose other than to serve as an indicator. So, we excised that vestigial organ. The other option is to rotate that Magenta piece 90 degrees counterclockwise from the instructions. You shouldn't use so many exclamation points in a Lego Forum. Too loud and scary.

But without purple piece (cable holder) the motor would be able to determine it's position. What happens now when you try to calibrate the set?

January 17, 20214 yr Just now, VermontDave said: It works fine without the magenta piece. Does it calibrate at the start?
January 17, 20214 yr We haven't done a reboot of the firmware, but it works when we turn it on with the control app. No problems yet. Lego Customer service didn't seem to indicate that the purple piece was anything more than a visual aid.

Absolutely... i'm just staggered at the amount of problems a couple of people are having. Its not a difficult build. Though it has no colour vomit, so maybe it is needed after all... or people need to take more care following instructions, and show more initiative in finding and fixing... technic is a journey of discovery and problem solving, at least it is for me

No, making parts bright ugly colours DOES NOT HELP nor call attention to anything when Lego is all brightly coloured pieces, and it doesn't help with part orientation either. Instead, a part like the wave selector would benefit from having a little raised arrow moulded onto it, or a little notch, something physical so that a little call out can be made to it in the instructions. Things such as these that can be called out in the instructions (and more numbered bags, the 1989 batmobile goes up to bag number 24) would work way better than just making the part a different ugly colour. January 18, 20214 yr I disagree.. Its hardly a difficult 'toy' to put together. If something of that level is beyond people, then they need more practice or a different hobby. You can't keep dumbing down and dumbing down. Not everything can be accessible to everyone.. its technic not duplo and as such comes with a degree of difficulty. ps I have 42114 sat next to me... there is no colour vomit/coding. Thankfully.

Well, the magenta piece is magenta, the wave selector is bright orange, the 16t gearbox gears are bright red and the axles and pins are all different colours. So yeah, there's lots of colour coding. But I do agree there's only so much you can make a set more accessible to inexperienced builders. But I think there are some good ways to help with that, like making the red gearbox gears double sided so they can't be installed backwards for example. Moulding some indicator on the parts, like the numbers they currently have moulded onto the different panels and angle connectors is also a good idea. Edited January 19, 20214 yr by allanp
