I think the £120 set will be a brick built Fawkes the Phoenix. It could be a bit bigger than Hedwig from last year and also come with the Sorting Hat and even the Sword of Gryffondor.

Fawkes is very colourful and unique- looking so I reckon the designers could have some really interesting building techniques when designing him. It’s also recognisable outside the theme and even other fantasy fans of birds of paradise admirers might want him. I also think a lot of the other ideas on here would be kinda monochrome and Fawkes could even have a flying play feature

Gotta say, while I understand the disappointment, I'm super stoked for the Chess set. I've wanted a giant LEGO Wizard Chess set ever since I first saw Sorcerer's Stone (how I first saw it) well over a decade ago, but it's something I never thought they'd ever actually make.

While I am disappointed by the lack of Gringotts, the difference is that Gringotts was just deferred- even if it's not coming in 2021, there's no way they'd just skip Gringotts entirely, and, judging by Marcos Bessa's attitude on the matter during the recent livestream, it seems as though it's in the works as we type. On the other hand, the Wizard's Chess scene is something LEGO has no obligation to make, and it's something that could have never happened at all. So, with the 20th Anniversary of the film that made me love Harry Potter (my mother didn't let me read the books), I'm so happy that this is what we're getting.

For the build, all of the pieces have to be brickbuilt for scale, and I'm really excited to see how they've interpreted them. The only exception is the little statues which ride the Knight horses, which I imagine will be minifigures, both for scale and because the horses need to accommodate a figure so Ron can ride one.

As for the potential of other chambers, I think it's fairly likely. The set will probably have some form of backdrop, and I imagine they could have the Chamber of the Winged Keys on the reverse. Also, I imagine the exit door at the far side of the board will lead to the Mirror Room, as some have guessed. Since that already features a wall of fire, I could also see them plopping the potions table in there at the top of the stairs. We'll have already had Fluffy and the Devil's Snare in the Forbidden Corridor set, so that would be every challenge (Except the dead troll, but I somewhat doubt that'll be included).

As for minifigures (in addition to the aforementioned Horse Riders), I imagine we'll get new versions of the Golden Trio. I imagine Ron and Hermione will use their same torsos from the Forbidden Corridor (Hermione will have a new print, Ron will reuse Harry's torso from 75953 and 75968), but Harry will have his battle damage. Harry and Ron also need new faces: Harry has a big cut on his face (or, a second big cut, rather, haha), and he'll probably get new expressions (angry frown on one side, "NEVA" shout on the other). Ron needs a face for after he's been knocked unconscious, and his other face could be a determined look. Hermione doesn't require a new face, but I could see her getting one, just so that she's not left out. If that's the case, I could see one side with a teary smile for the "Books and Cleverness" scene, and the other being a puzzling expression for the Potions challenge.

For other figures, Quirrell is a near-definite, presumably with a new centered Voldemort face to match the golden variant. His main face could be a more cruel look, which would fit the scene better than his timid face from 2018. McGonagall would be a good pick, since it is her chessboard. And I still think the D2C will include a Golden Dumbledore.

Also, while I won't write it here, I think @sebastian666 has made some other great points regarding why this set is so great, and why it will likely sell very well.

Overall, super excited for this one, and I think it has the potential to be one of the best LEGO D2Cs, period.

I definitely agree @Retro Brick Reviews. This set could be fantastic if done well. So much potential for such an iconic scene. I could even see them including sort of "vignettes" of all 7 of the tasks he had to get through that would go underneath the Chess Board or be small modular on the side. (Snap Task, please!). This could account for the "in-between" aspect of the set.

Pipedream for sure but I wonder if we could also get a new stand-alone Voldemort in the set. Voldemort right after Quirrell turned to dust and Voldemort was a spectre. He could have be completely opaque and with a Dementor "leg" and a dark opaque torso and head. A dream perhaps better served in a CMF series?

My opinion on the D2C set is pretty neutral and I’ll reserve judgment until pictures get revealed. HOWEVER, this would not have been my reaction if we hadn’t received these warnings by @Guyon2002 and @Falconfan1414. I’m not sure what it would have been like exactly, but trust me, you wouldn’t have wanted to be near me  So my deepest thanks to both of you for preventing me from torching something in anger :laugh_hard:

Oh, and of course thanks to @KA1 as well for providing us with the set info :sweet:

HAHA, I assume many would have tried overturning their tables if this info released out of nowhere and we spent months speculating on how Hooch would have fit into the Gringotts Bank set. I myself am more excited than I thought about a Chess Set and hope it turns out at least ok.

If nothing else, it could be a good parts set to make a good Battle of Hogwarts MOC

I remember that few months ago, when Guyon said we should lower our expectations here was a joke that D2C is a chess set xd

Looks like it was more than just a joke

I mean I wouldn't mind a buildable Fawkes for the brick built creature :shrug_oh_well:

Probably the only one that justifies a $120 set :shrug_oh_well: Personally, I would have prefered a Niffler, but at a much lower price point of course

Yeah I 100% understand why they went with the chess set. It'll appeal to HP fans (obviously), non-HP fans who like chess, and if the build looks as cool as it did in the movie, it can introduce non-HP fans into the theme. While I wished for a traditional minifig-scale set, I think at the $250 pricepoint they'll be able to do the chess set justice (and more). I even have a wizard chess set from 2001 which was probably the first piece of HP merchandise I ever owned, so this set would hold some nostalgic value for me :)

No one said buildable creature is $120 set. Moreover, we aren't even sure that it's true, since Guyon hinted that it isn't correct.

Yeah I wouldn't expect the $120 to be a buildable fawkes...

Shoot, I'd actually thought of that, but just forgotten to type it out. Yeah, that's another figure we could potentially see, since it would only require a new torso and head, and would be a super special figure to get (just as special and cool as Golden Dumbledore imo).

Fawkes is not the $120 set

...but instead the $70 one? :laugh_hard: Jk of course

But the $120 has to be something that’s not minifig-scaled, otherwise KA’s comment and the PPR wouldn’t make sense. Plus Guyon called it the worst of the bunch

Thanks for clarifying, it’s going to be very interesting to see what it turns out to be!

To be honest I’m quite happy the D2C sets could both be non-standard pieces this year. In the last 12 months I’ve bought the Hogwarts Clocktower and Astronomy Tower, all of the CMF and Diagon Alley (tho I split the price of that one with my brother!) As I’m definitely getting at least the Chamber of Secrets, the most expensive Hogwarts system set so far, I could really do with a cheaper year of Harry Potter (for me at least!)

Were microscale sets ever debunked this year? :oh:

1. I totally agree that the pixie should be sand blue but I still like it. Hopefully there will be at least two. I guess this means we no longer have to speculate about a Lockhart CMF?

2. I'm very happy about the D2C being such an easy skip and if this is the best set from August then I could be saving quite a bit of money.  Some people have mentioned including the other challenges with it but I really hope that doesn't happen. Sacrificing all of the customers who would be interested in a generic chess set (I imagine the set will be like the noble collection set which is generic enough) probably isn't worth dedicating parts to chunks of the chambers in an attempt to win over HP collectors who can ignore the set otherwise. I do hope we get all of the other challenges though at some point, hopefully including a condensed chess board like the 2001 set, and if we're really lucky a reference to the potion chamber.

My main fear with the chess set is that LEGO will make the challenge variants of the trio exclusive to that set and not include them with the forbidden corridor remake. If LEGO does feel the need to include exclusive figures with the chess set I would like to see torn/bloody variants of the trio with clean versions included with the forbidden corridor.

There’s only one D2C set though, the $120 one is just a normal set. Well, at least in its availability

My main worry that I previously had with getting a Chessboard Challenge set was that it would be too undersized to do it justice, but at a $250 pricepoint, that shouldn't be a concern.

Keep low your expectations and you'll never be disappointed :snicker:.

Sort of common people wisdom.

Even if I prefer dreaming...

I thought the build able Hedwig was decent, and I thought the Monster Book of Monsters was cool (would've maybe got it if it wasn't a gift with purchase) but I don't think we really need anymore buildable creatures.

The only times we see Fawkes is in Chamber of Secrets (and a tiny moment in Order of the Phoenix), and whilst the puppet is a fantastic animatronic, I don't know if Fawkes has the iconicity that Hedwig does.
