Well again it’s not confirmed to be a expansion but I don’t think it will just the chess set

I don't see Hogwarts Chess being an expansion to June sets. For a good movie appearance chessboard I think that at least a 32x32 baseplate is needed. Wouldn't the chessboard be out of scale compared to other sets? Obviously one can always put sets as he prefers :snicker:

But yes, I think like you that it won't be just chess.

It will be a hard waiting till the next infos .

I have been saying that its long overdue to have a CoS and Fluffy and a chess set so actually this wave turned out alright. The only thing I dont like is they made them very different to the existing sets so it would be difficult to combine

Do you MOC your sets, Juve?

My thoughts on the $250 being a chess set? At first I didn't care for it. I like to think they will make each chess piece buildable and they will be decently sized because of the price. Hopefully, the board is more than a flat board and they make it, for lack of better term, "very HP": a few columns and bits of fire pieces to surround the board maybe?

I agree, looking at the pictures of the chess scene only the pawns are actually life-sized, all the pieces are much larger. Personally I think it could be really cool if you have these massive buildable medieval statues that can tower over the minifigures. I also think the chess board won't have any sort of Hogwarts built onto it or as a backdrop as Lego probably want to attract casual chess fans as well as the Harry Potter fandom. Like it will probably be a big black box with just the chess pieces advertised on the front and then the Harry Potter action features on the back, with maybe a tiny Hogwarts facade which serves as a minifigure stand for the trio plus golden Dumbledore - I think there is going to be a smaller set with Quirrell and Lego won't shoehorn the flying keys, devil's snare or Mirror of Erised into this set.

I hardly think so, the Lego employees are not stupid and they would not make it if they did not think it would sell a lot. I am sure a lot of adult HP fans that are not into Lego yet would love a piece like that :shrug_oh_well:

Are we watching the same LEGO company? I hate to be cynical, and I love LEGO, but let’s not pretend that they haven’t made some stupid bone-headed decisions in the past. Hell even now we have ideas like Vidiyo and Hidden side, both complete flops.

it’s just so sad to see HP, a theme that has since now been on a hot streak, take a complete other direction that isn’t satisfying anyone. The best thing that can happen imo is that this year flops terribly so they realize what was already working

I can already feel the frustration trying to explain to kids at the LEGO store how there are two different Hogwarts styles now and why half of the sets look completely different from what is there now.

Isn't he posting a joke rumour that originated from a user on here about the sorting hat? :pir-sad2:

Haha yes. I think I can take credit for that one. It was my suggestion after we heard how “disappointing” the August wave. I said the worst possible set we could get would be a brick built Sorting Hat, because no matter how you design it, it will inevitably end up looking like a poo emoji: 💩 But it was just a joke @Ashnflash! I have no insider info to suggest this is actually happening. :laugh_hard: If we do end up getting a brick built Sorting Hat, I will have to buy some lottery tickets.

Dang, I wish I had your ability to predict the future, like the sales of a theme that came out a mere three weeks ago  “I don’t like it, therefore it stinks and sells poorly” is not as logically sound as many AFOLs may believe

I feel like this is a bit overly dramatic... How can you say the new lineup isn’t satisfying anyone? I, for one, am thrilled at the prospect of a beautiful LEGO Wizard’s Chess set and the other sets and minifigs are growing on me daily.

It may be the case that you are not satisfied with this lineup, but you are not the target audience. The audience is - first and foremost - kids. What LEGO has cleverly done this year is expand the target audience by intentionally including young parents (late 20s, early 30s) who are nostalgic about Harry Potter and want to share the magic as a family.

This was the primary theme of the LEGO Harry Potter live event over the weekend - these products are designed for you to build together as a family. I believe you mentioned working for LEGO - doesn’t any of this ring true from your employee training?

Yes, I hope they realize that they should continue with 2018-2020 style of sets but I kinda fear that this year anniversary sets will flop so hard that it could end this theme.

And yes we are not target audience but even most of the kids wont buy $250 chess set or another Great Hall if they already own one.

Least he didn't write like a treatise of paragraphs like I did a while back on disappointment. :P While I agree, I am actually pretty excited about a Chess Set since I absolutely love both the scene in the movie as well as the book. Add to that the Queen's Gambit giving a new found appreciation for Chess!

Given how much money they raked in last year, I'm very curious how they are looking at their future lineups. Given the leaks here, and elsewhere in the other themes, as well as the seemingly increase in D2C sets, it seems there is a complete and fundamental shift in their strategies. I wonder if HP seems to be bearing it a lot lately for better or worse. Curious if this "Build Lego Together" strategy is a large part of it.

Yes because obviously every kid on this planet already owns the 2018 Great Hall. What kind of school did you visit that gave you this perception of logic and reality?

That makes no sense. First off, you do realise that next year's sets are already in development as we speak, yes? Secondly, the success of a single wave does not determine the fate of a theme, especially not a large one. SW surely had waves that sold better than others, and it's still alive and kicking  Thirdly, why would these particular sets flop? Just look at the minifigs and creatures included! For instance, the Basilisk alone will guarantee good sales for the CoS set

And you know what I think? Devil's snare will be included in the third floor corridor, then in August we will get room with flying keys that can connect with this corridor. Next to the flying keys we will be able to connect chess set and maybe there will be Harry's and Quirrell's final battle set for $40 ($30 is flying lesson, $60 is most likely Fawkes and $120 is too big). And we will be able to connect them all

I believe it's still being sold in a variety of web stores, still available at lego.co.uk, and  in the US and currently only "temporarily out of stock" at lego.com. Should be retired this year due to this new one coming out. I'd imagine that is what @Metanoios91 is inferring.

I certainly hope not, solely because the minifig selection would be the most boring thing in existence  Why would anyone want three to four sets with basically the exact same 3 minifigs?

No 43179 is the Mickey and Minnie Mouse buildable figures. I think he is hinting at a July 1st release?

Or the buildable figure set ffor 120 is actually a pair of figures

Oh no... I could see a buildable Harry vs Voldemort statue (like the one Funko recently did) being a possibility. That would be a hard pass for me personally.
