I voted for Space - Ice Planet and we do have the ice planet torsos. *fingers crossed*

Something Ice planet would be nice for sure , the torsos are a good start.

Brickset lists Trans-Neon Orange as Retiredhttps://brickset.com/colours/status-Retired/type-Transparent , but that's probably only because there have been no parts for 2022, and the 2020/2021 sets with it have retired.

Trans neon-orange is one of my favorite colors (I just recently sorted my transparent spare parts into a transparent sorting case) and in normal daylight, the neon orange, neon green, bright green just have this extra glow to it.

Nexo Knight and later first wave of 2020 Monkie Kid used that color heavily, but after 2021 (1 snowflake part in story of nian) , it hasn't been used since. :shrug_confused:

I'd be sad if LEGO did something ice planet with trans-orange, just isn't the same.

As for Bionicle, I don't think it's something that defines 90 year of LEGO compared to something brick-based, but it still was a long lasting theme/genre that made a sub-section of LEGO community.

Just for 2022 we got multiple references

- Classic Space figure in 80035: Monkie Kid's Galactic Explorer / 80036: The City of Lanterns  (stickers)

- Bionicle 80036: The City of Lanterns   (sticker)

- Znap 80036: The City of Lanterns (sticker)

- Galidor wingsuit reference 80030: Monkie Kid's Staff Creations (box art) + build

Hidden Side School bus had both Blacktron II (torso) and Bionicle (sticker) references in the school bus.

I honestly think one of the hardest parts with Bionicle is what they would make. While it's easy to make a classic castle or space location, Bionicle has enough iconic characters and such that inevitably someone would be very disappointed with what they did or didn't make (unless they did all 6 OG Toa or something, which would be pretty sweet).

Hmm... I wonder if the 90th anniversary promo could be something similar to the 60th anniversary one where there are four vignettes for the four top voted themes, with the main set being the final chosen theme... That would be a sort of appeasing to people who wanted one them or another over what actually got picked, and it would give opportunity to still represent all four of the popular themes in the vote...

Trans-Neon Orange apparently did actually retire last year. We had seen hints of that earlier (a Lego color chart spotted in a video listed it as due to retire at the end of 2020), which seems consistent with the Lunar New Year set being the last set to use it. It is a shame—though I'm glad that between Nexo Knights and the first year of Monkie Kid using it heavily in its final years, it went out with a bang rather than a whimper.

They didn't use trans-neon orange for the lanterns in Ninjago City Gardens, despite it being used in Ninjago City and Ninjago City Docks and having an Ice Planet ice cream shop. The conclusion was because it was a retired colour, so they had to use something else instead. So I don't think that it's just because nothing has used the colour recently.

So the discussed rumours a while back in the Color thread ended up being true.

But couldn't 'trans orange' be retired and replaced by a nearly identical color of 'trans bright orange' or something? What color is the dome on the Monkey Kid Moonbase set?

It's regular Trans-orange but it looks a bit saturated in the product photos with the kids.

Brickset says the dome in the MK set is trans bright orange. I'd be fine with that color even though it's ironically not as bright.

Yeah I looked it up, Trans Bright-Orange (Brickset/LEGO name ID182) is the same as Trans-Orange (Bricklink name ID98)

Yeah the names of colors are confusing. What we all call teal is 'dark blue-ish green' or something silly like that.

It would be odd if the 90th anniversary set is any one theme honestly. I fully expect some kind of mashup, or a microscale architecture-style display with some of the most recognizable items from past X themes.

I know I am setting myself up for disappointment here, but I am only interested in Castle and Pirates and expect something similar to B-bay in size and splendour. I have no interest in anything like 40290, then I rather wish that space or bonkle wins so those fans can get a set they want instead of something like that:pir-murder:

In my wildest dreams! But how would, say, a magnificent space set do justice to the anniversary? They want to celebrate Lego, so they just make a regular Lego set that has no special tie in to the anniversary except it's from a past theme?
And if 60 years of the Lego brick was just a small promotional set, why would this be epic? After all, 100 years anniversary is just around the corner so it would make sense to go all out on that.
Recently Lego has been opting for the compromise road like never before: please everyone... somewhat, but no one truly.
A great space/castle/bionicle/whatever set when you don't expect one would be just that... make one+ fan group elated, but somewhat miss the widest audience.

You may be right, but:

  1. there was the fan vote this time that made a lot of headlines and we get a lot of sets now we never would have got even 5 years ago..
  2. they can make a lot of stuff to celebrate the anniversary in addition to this so why not give the fans what they want :shrug_oh_well:
  3. it is 10 years to the 100 years so would not say just around the corner and anyway why would that stop them from celebrating now?
  4. A great space/castle/bionicle/pirate set would make that dedicated fanbase really happy and sell a lot to them, probably sell to someone outside that core group as well. Compared to say a football stadium how many do buy that who are not fans of the team?

1. Yes, but those sets weren't unexpected... in fact, it was odd that they didn't come sooner and that there weren't more of them, given how many things move cyclically and start catering to fans that are now grown up and have more money to spend.
2. I'm all for this, but unless one theme won by quite some margin...
3. Not stop... but certainly you wouldn't want to outdo yourself given how significant "100" sounds compared to "90" :)
4. This ties in to what I said for point number 1. I obviously have no idea what Lego fans around the world want. Just because I cannot find much interest for a football stadium in the groups and forums I'm a member of, doesn't mean half the China won't buy it without my knowledge :)

Those sets are not just made for retail sale. They are great (free) advertising pieces for "look what you can make out of LEGO" in worldwide press. Plus the Barca one coincided with the opening of the Barcelona store, so great advertising to get people in and buy something even if not that set.

Plus they appeal to non-traditional LEGO fans, so lead to sales to people who would not normally buy LEGO, while LEGO fans can choose from the hundreds of other more traditional sets.

Yes I know that , but how many traditional sets from space/castle/bionicle/pirates can the Lego fans choose from now a days :sceptic: One 200$ set from one of those themes should be possible for the 90th anniversary right :shrug_confused:

Exactly my thoughts and the main reason imo why Bionicle won't be picked as the theme to represent 90th anniversary.

The only thing I dread is if they do a compromise and try to mash up 4 themes into a single set. I believe it's still optimal to just go all in on one of the themes. It's probably going to sell well and maybe Lego will take a hint that they should do more of these outside anniversaries. One can hope at least.

Yep. Another set like the pirate bay and I'm buying that day 1. I don't even care what the theme is, with the probable exception of Bionicle.

Well, just to play devil's advocate, Bionicle is after all, one of the main reasons why we still have LEGO around as an independent company today in the first place. I do agree with the notion that it doesn't represent what people traditionally think as "LEGO" but at the same time, I think it is worth acknowledging the theme that enabled them to survive and became what they are today, which is something they have never done before.

But to be fair, I think the main reason they won't pick Bionicle would have more to do with them not really being sure what kind of set to produce and not having any of the old Bionicle molds available anymore. They could theoretically make a System-based Tahu set, but even that would require at the very least bringing back one of the old mask molds or creating a new one.

For the record, would LEGO be willing to bring back any older molds or create new ones for a set like this? This applies to all the potential winning themes. I'm sure Castle fans would like to see the return of the older pre-fab Castle walls, or Space fans would maybe like one of those older cockpit pieces and so on...

Back when the poll was first being held, everyone would have said "no" because it is a D2C set, but things have changed quite a lot in the area of D2C sets in the past year, so...

I do agree that Bionicle played a big role in company's survival in early 2000's but then again, last year was the 20th anniversary and what did we get? I don' think it was realistic to expect any anniversary sets since those usually apply to themes that are more or less continuously run (Harry Potter is a slight exception) for X amount of time, but at least a mention/post on social media would be nice. On the other hand I realise that people would loose their "bricks" and would grossly exaggerate importance of it which might be a reason stayed silent. Overall I'm of opinion that Lego isn't very comfortable with Bionicle right now.

As far as I understand it, Lego destroys their moulds after some time, so they would need to reverse engineer them by using original pieces form original sets. I'd love it if they actually went that far though

I hope the answer is no. The anniversary set should be a modern set, celebrating the history / historical theme rather than trying to remake an old theme piece by piece with old parts.

I doubt this individual D2C set would have the budget for bringing back old pieces on its own. Even though there are certainly D2C sets that have had unique molded pieces, a big factor in that is whether or not other current part designs (or for that matter, a new part design that is more novel or versatile than just a straight reissue of an older part design) could work better. For licensed D2C sets where capturing the exact likeness of a licensed character or vehicle is essential, that might merit a new part. For a set based on a "generic" classic theme where other parts could be used to achieve the same overall aesthetic hallmarks, that's significantly less likely to happen. AFOLs have been showing for a long time how "neo-classic" space or castle aesthetics can be not just recreated but made even more impressive and detailed using modern parts and techniques. So I see no reason why Lego would deem it necessary to do differently, especially since whatever budget a set like this does have could go that much further if it were instead used on useful printed pieces or recolored parts that cost a fraction of what a new or refurbished mold would.

I also doubt a lot of retired parts would be considered one way or another. Beyond just being retired, many of those parts had designs that were replaced in no small part due to design issues with the original designs. For instance, growing up I remember plenty of times where the "plate" section extending off the back of the old castle wall panels would get bent or damaged from being stepped on—I have little doubt that that's a big part of why the newer versions used in more recent Castle or Pirates sets are flatter and simpler. The same goes for many old hinge types used for most old space cockpits, among other parts.
