I mean... obviously, but why not just straight up release it now in early 2022?

Because Lego's 90th anniversary isn't until August.

I would still expect an announcement of what theme was chosen before the official reveal, but we'll see.

I don't know about that... I feel like if the theme is revealed alongside a particularly good-looking set, it'll make the "loss" go down easier for fans of the other themes than announcing the theme on its own ahead of time.

I really don't think announcing the theme before the set reveal would be a good idea ... that's just added time for us to get up our expectations/hopes to be disappointed, and to gather the salt. Just look at the Nexo Knights 2016 thread, that was full of people getting hyped up for like a year about Fantasy Era 2.

If they would have revealed that they would have done it after the poll, but they made a point of not telling us as part of the surprise :shrug_oh_well:

Think if it is only a small 20$ GWP after all this hype

Given other ideas polls and contests I'd like to say that I think we'd have been told if it was a GWP but maybe not.

We had castle recently, we had pirates recently more than once, bionicle I'm not sure Lego would feel marks the anniversary properly. That leaves space. Since it's just a one off and is supposed to be special it's probably going to be pricier and aimed slightly more at AFOLs. So... likely a recreation of a classic space base + ship as the most iconic (if only for being the first) representation of Lego space?

I thought they got their fill with space with the currently inspired NASA lunar sets??  I’m all for Castle, Pirates or Space but I could had thought Bionicle topped the list quite frankly.

Since the original poll was said to be for "a single new product for the 2022 LEGO Adult Portfolio", I don't think LEGO would be too worried about it conflicting with their kid-targeted "play themes". So I'm not sure we have any grounds to "rule out" any of the four themes in contention at this point.

Plus, when you we get right down to it, I don't think we even know exactly what sort of set the resulting product is going to be! A lot of folks here are expecting it to be an "advanced playset" of sorts, like the Modular Buildings Collection, Pirates of Barracuda Bay, etc. But it could turn out to be end up being something else entirely, like a large-scale character sculpture or a mosaic kit.

I realize that sort of thing might be disappointing for a lot of people, but it would help explain how LEGO could have the confidence to offer so many different themes and subthemes as poll options without needing to worry about any of them being too heavily reliant on out-of-production parts or set-specific recolors.

And truth be told, would any of us really say no to a set like 76393 that focused on classic LEGO Pirates, Castle, or Space characters instead of licensed ones? I certainly wouldn't mind that sort of thing at all!

Personally I'd love to see a remake at some point of the LL928 Space Cruiser in the same vein as Black Seas Barracuda. Whether that or something similar should be the 90th Anniversary set though... Classic Space was 'my' era of Lego, but that is different for everyone. Whatever theme they go with will probably have more people saying 'why not something else' than in favour.

What a Space set could fulfill that wasn't covered by the Benny ship would be 1) being available in 2022, fully eight years after the Benny ship was released, 2) being part of the Adult Portfolio it should use more complex building techniques and details, whereas the Benny ship was a simpler playset aimed at kids, and 3) potentially being an intentional modernized remake of the 928 Galaxy Explorer, whereas the Benny ship was an homage with a very different suite of play features. That is, if the 90th anniversary set is Space, which we don't know.

Ah, I see where you’re coming from. In my head I’d imagined a Space set to be grey plates and simplistic. But would be interesting to see it brought up-to-date with modern build design whilst still paying unmistakable homage to the original.

I’m neutral to be honest, and just looking forward to it. Castle, Space, Belville, whatever it is.

For my two pence, if this is just to release a one-off set from a classic theme, then I don’t gather what can be fulfilled by a Space set that wasn’t covered by Benny’s spaceship.

Also, if it's between Castle and Space, there have been two very nice Castle sets still available at the Lego website, the Blacksmith Shop and the recent Creator Castle.

If it's between Bionicle and Space, well, Bionicle had a full theme when Benny's Spaceship was out, so I'm gonna call that a tie. I'm not going to count the two small sets from The Lego Movie 2 as anything; those were insubstantial except for the minifigs.

And if anyone says brings up City Space, I'm going to say Castle fans have Harry Potter, Disney, Hidden Side, etc.

To be honest, if it's space, I'd sort of rather it be a moonbase rather than just a ship. Benny's spaceship has already shown how well a classic spaceship in isolation can be modernized, but a well-developed moonbase would truly stand out from previous Classic Space homages. A moonbase could also include rovers and even a launchpad with a spaceship (albeit maybe not as large as a standalone spaceship would be), allowing a set like that to better capture more of the breadth of the Classic Space theme's aesthetics (not unlike what Barracuda Bay did with its combination of a ship and tropical island).

We have a moon station set in City theme that is just released this month.

I really think it’s a moon base as 90th annniveary set, in my honest opinion.

Speaking of that moon base, check out those trans blue panels ... if we get a recolor in trans bright green or trans neon green all I can see is Mega Core Magnetizer, Magnetizer, MAGNETIZER! But that's just a wish that probably won't happen.

I was watching a review of that moon base set and it struck me that the main thing that makes this 'City' Space is the figures. If they were swapped out for Classic Space minifigs it would go most of the way to making it a 'Classic' moon base, with the classic inspired logo already featuring prominently in the set. Although, the white and trans blue colour scheme of the base is more Futuron than the blue, grey and trans yellow of Classic :snicker:

Pirates/Castle seem less likely due to their recent Ideas and Creator sets.

A possible “compromise” would be for the anniversary set to be BIONICLE and then also release a Creator 3-in-1 based on Classic Space to go alongside 31109/31120.

My theory on that is that they mostly threw those other options out as a means of doing some market research among hardcore fans about what kind of stuff still has appeal and what doesn't.  There were definitely some really weird choices on there, namely the fact that they had Divers as a separate subtheme, and that they separated out certain themes into different subthemes (Castle) and some only split into a couple of different subthemes (Pirates and Imperials, and if I remember correctly they had Space, Ice Planet 2002, and Mars Mission, but no other Space subthemes?  I know that technically Rock Raiders is set in space, but that doesn't really count since there's, at best, one space-y vehicle in there).

Anyway, I have to imagine that they knew the finals would end up with Castle, Space, and Pirates, maybe with a decent shot for Town, Adventurers, and Bionicle, but I can't think that they expected some of the more obscure themes to win.  I was pulling for either Adventures or Model Team, so my hope is that at least Adventurers proved that there's still a fanbase there and we could maybe get some sort of soft-reboot of it in the future.  I assume Model Team is a lost cause, though, because I can't imagine it did all that well in the vote, and we have the Creator Expert vehicles that are similar-ish to that line.

Why would their be a "compromise", this is a one off fan vote should not matter what else is on shelf's, but what fans voted most for right?!

What would have been most interesting is if they had made 4 sets so fans could put their money where their mouth is

They did not think it true enough that was why there was so many strange would not say categories, but divided themes, space had several:

  1. Bionicle - 24799
  2. Classic Space - 18171
  3. Pirates - 15884
  4. Trains - 14855
  5. Adventurers - 13988
  6. Classic Castle -12603
  7. Forestmen - 8056
  8. Lion Knights - 7117
  9. Imperials - 7012
  10. Town - 6610
  11. Black Knights - 6427
  12. Model Team - 6397
  13. Dragon Knights - 6334
  14. Space Police - 5738
  15. Rock Raiders - 5298
  16. Studios - 5179
  17. Blacktron - 5088
  18. Ice Planet - 4503
  19. Black Falcons - 4244
  20. Aquazone - 4051
  21. M-Tron - 3555
  22. Alpha Team - 2807

Agreed. Not so much about Benny's spaceship (although it was pretty good for what it was), but a base/vehicle combo is the best way to satisfy everyone. Maybe resurrect one of those legendary baseplates in brick form? But it would be hard to capture the imagination of classic space and not just make it like a city moon base, but in different colors. That's the main part.

I think this would tie marvelously with what I've said in the previous paragraph... make a moon base and throw in some wild looking vehicles like the MCM, make it really look "out of this world", but with more detail than we've had before.
They wouldn't have to look far in terms of inspiration, there are simply wonderful MOC's in this regard.

Because the same thing has been happening for god knows how long already? :)
Me: "Wow, if they make this it'll be great, and if they make this it'll still be great in a different way, there's no way it cannot be amazing in some way."
Lego: "Hey, you want this thing that's a mashup of every possible idea we could have realized but each of the ideas in here is only like 20% developed to make room for all the others?"
Me: "..."
