The Battlefront 2 skins were an unappreciated set of designs that I really wish lego utilized. Course, we did get the 501st specialist pack last year, so maybe we'll see more sometime soon. (At the same time though, I hope we'd get generic commandos, TCW Arcs, etc before the BF2 skins.) The Jump Troopers would also be very cool. I think the newer design was in rebels or something, but the original 2017 design went just as hard. A Jetpack Cargo set with some rebel and imperial jump troopers, the cargo, and some Mos Eisley rooftops would be fun. 1 hour ago, ARC2149Nova said: I'm stealing your AOTC spotlight! I think it'd be a fun way to add something new/unique to the mid-sized and larger system sets for something where the generic guys are in a battle pack. Is it the clone commander? (If so, I'm gonna be honest, I get that gripe. It's so weird to me that they made the highest rank appear in multiple sets and didn't do any others. Hence why in my wave the rank scales with the cost of the set) Love the clone wars wave, great job. Good spread of seasons and battles. Battlefront 2 41st, but granted, I thought they WERE the 442nd, just renamed to be the same legion as the camo troops. Ha! I was just trying to get the largest spread of clones. I'd love a larger amount of 327th troopers too, but then we'd lose a legion. Ideally there'd be sort of a playground trade thing going on where the bricklink prices aren't that bad because people trying to buy up 327th are selling the other legions and vice versa, but clone prices on bricklink are never logical, so in this hypothetical scenario I'd just find a friend trying to army-build the 91st, 442nd, or galactic marines. I changed my mind on doing the CMFs, I had some trouble figuring out how to do new versions of obi-wan, anakin, dooku, grievous, etc from the films only and otherwise the CMF just ends up being noncombatant aliens and clone commanders. Which I'd love, but clearly isn't how they'd do a CMF, so I'm going to skip them. ArrowBricks Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 Rather than list sets I’d like to see in the future, I am going to advocate for a set of principles that Lego should adopt to help improve their sets. This is in no particular order. 1. Mid-scale sets must continue. This sub-theme has the potential to be great if they go all in and release 3 each year, every year. They can even tie in new ships from new content, too. 2. Release sets that go hand-in-hand. They’ve started to do this with the Mando S3 June 2024 sets (and they go really well with the 2023 sets, too from Mando S3). One really great modern example can be found in Harry Potter. Buying Hagrid’d Hut, the Ford Anglia, and the new Aragog set together all works super well. Add on the Hogwarts Express e/Hogsmeade station, and a fan of Harry Potter has so much to do with those sets. More broadly, the Harry Potter theme exists based on this principle with the Hogwarts expansion sets and the now Diagon Alley ones - granted both examples here are specific to the theme and less translatable compared to the first example. They all work well together. Star Wars needs to adopt this a lot better, especially for the main 6 films. 3. A move away from focusing only on iconic ships - with the Star Wars team trying to accommodate for an ever-increasing spectrum of fans and Star Wars media, the sets have become arguably risk-free. If we take a look at TPM anniversary wave, there’s only one traditional set and that’s a safe set too. Where’s the risk? What’s new for long-term collectors? Currently, I think they’re missing the mark. Granted, I liked the creativity in the Brickheadz pack line and the Droideka. An example of this is the 2012 Gungan Sub and the 2013 AT-TE. Queen Amidala and Coleman Trebor had no right being in those sets but they felt truly unique, a subtle gift for fans. 4. Make January great again. Releasing more sets in a January wave does a several things. 1. Bolster sales - children will be armed with Christmas cash to buy new sets. 2. Take advantage of new year sentiment which again bolsters sales. 3. If you get the January wave right, people will more likely remember the year in a positive light. Also, in my opinion, there is no need for a March wave. Instead, put the mid-scale ships for May, and the May-June stuff in January. Realistically, we should have gotten the Mando S3 sets and Rex’s Y-Wing in January. 5. Blend smaller re-releases, with larger re-releases. I can’t be the only long-term collector that sees the newer sets and thinks they’re worst than what I already own. Size is a big part of this. For some sets, it works. I personally think the Sith Infiltrator needed to be smaller. But the Star Destroyer is unnecessarily small. 6. Improve Minifigure quality. Whilst Lego fans aren’t exactly the best for standing up to mediocrity, they’ve lost sales from me due to the poor printing in the AT-TE and the Coruscant Guard Gunship, to name but a few. The quality is getting worse, not better. This is a frightening prospect given I’m spending more money on these sets. 7. Just because it isn’t labelled 18+ doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be the best version of that product you could have made. A growing concern I have is that sets being released for younger audiemces are not the best version Lego could have made. This can relate to size, pieces, functionality, minifigures (amount, design). 8. Sets need more functionality. An unintended consequence of more detailed models and 18+ targeted sets, is the eroding of LEGO’s ethos. You only have to look back at Lego Star Wars reviews from 2008-2015 and you’ll see the ingenuity and innovation in those sets. Today’s sets are bland, predominately tailored to the pillars of displayability and realism. A better balance is needed. Certainly the sets from back in the day didn’t compromise on detail and realism. I’m looking at you Magnaguard Starfighter and Bounty Hunter Gunship. I will be very interested to hear other people’s thoughts. If you want me to elaborate anything above, let me know and I will. More than happy to be challenged on anything too. After all, I quickly typed this up and haven’t fully considered everything, including what isn’t included above. Quote
icm Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 (edited) My quick thoughts on your quick thoughts: 1 - I'd be happy to see steady releases of two or three midi-scale starships each year, but no more. 2 - It was a lot easier to release sets that go hand-in-hand when there was a lot less Star Wars content, and a lot fewer new releases. It's a lot easier for Harry Potter, since the source material for that is a single series of tightly-linked movies that returned to the same locations over and over and over. 3 - I've been collecting LSW since 1999, and I've only really ever wanted the iconic vehicles. I've usually not been very interested in obscure stuff I've never heard of, nor minifigures that don't belong with the rest of the set. But that's just my personal preference. 4 - I always thought sales were lower in January because kids and parents have spent their money before Christmas, and that's why the January wave is small. 5 - It's rare that a remake is better in every way than the previous version, or worse in every way. I personally think the Sith Infiltrator needed to be bigger, and the set as released really works a lot better with the Ron McPhatty rebuild if you pretend it's a midi-scale Starship Collection entry. I think the Star Destroyer looks a little bit small, but I don't mind because it still looks really good to my eyes. More generally, I don't quite understand what you mean by "blend small re-releases with large re-releases." Do you mean that some re-releases should be smaller than the previous versions and some should be larger? 6 - YES 7 - YES 8 - I've been collecting LSW since 1999. I've always wanted both more detail and accuracy, and more play functionality, but given the choice between the same vehicle with more detail and more functions I would always prefer more detail/accuracy, ever since I was a kid. Certainly a lot of sets from 2008-2015 had good detail and good functions, but a lot of them compromised accuracy for functions too heavily and ended up looking like crap - janky, fragile crap too, a lot of the time. I agree that LSW sets from the Disney era often focus on detail instead of play features, but not always. I mean, look at the new Sith Infiltrator. That trades looks for play with the big spine for the droid bay. The E-wing has nice retractable landing gear, which I always appreciated as a kid. The Yavin IV rebel base is all about play, not looks. There are the LSW mechs. The Justifier had this great big retractable landing gear mechanism, the Razor Crest is stuffed with play features. And there's only so much you can do to add surprising and unexpected functions to most SW starfighters and speeders. Edited May 25, 2024 by icm Quote
ARC2149Nova Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 @ArrowBricks I agree with most of what you said, but I will say to point 8, I've never been a fan of gimmicks in toys, even as a kid. It felt too restrictive. I, too, tended to prefer more straight forward "realistic" designs, over something that had a ton of play features, as I never used said features. 3. Stale is a word that comes to mind. Part of what made LSW exciting back in the day was the feeling that almost anything could be released next. Now, it's the same old boring-A cycle. And worse, the figure selections seem even more uninspired. Part of that is Disney's fault as a licensor, but if Hasbro can go ham with The Black Series, surely Lego can figure something out. 6. This really grinds my gears because Lego has definitely taken steps backwards in this regard: the 2014-2016 Hoth Rebel Trooper and Snowspeeder Pilot minifigures compared to more recent releases. It's one thing if they never "got it right" so to speak, but to pay attention to detail just to change due to cost-cutting laziness is mind-boggling. I feel the same way about the new clone trooper and stormtrooper designs. 2014's designs were perfect, but nope, got to change just because. @icm Point 4: I have to call cap on that, Christmas money, aka money kids received for Christmas, is prime for spending on the January 1st Lego releases. Not saying we need $80+ sets in the winter wave, but these 2 and 3 system set waves ain't cutting it. Besides, if Christmas burnout was a real concern, just release in December. I just want the old style winter waves to return: 2 battle packs, a $20, $30, $50, and $60 set, plus maybe the occasional oddity (midi-scale, microfighter, etc) Quote

I will be very interested to hear other people’s thoughts. If you want me to elaborate anything above, let me know and I will. More than happy to be challenged on anything too. After all, I quickly typed this up and haven’t fully considered everything, including what isn’t included above. First, thanks for the kind words on the lists- I had been wondering where you were with this thread flaring up again! 1. Completely agree, so long as they're alongside dioramas, not instead of them. Star Wars is developing a bad habit of creating and then quickly dropping new sublines, and the dioramas are excellent. 2. While difficult due to the increased amount of content, I agree. Whenever there are multiple sets in a year from the same battle, or that CAN be from the same battle, interactability should be a feature. 3. While it would be nice, I'm not going to "agree" here, just because with the amount of content, I completely understand why they're having so much trouble getting more niche stuff out there. I'd love more niche ships- but not at the expense of kids being able to buy their x-wings and ties and jedi starfighters. I think the solution is to simply put out more sets. 4. Totally. This brand is massive- and this'll tie into 3- it can afford to produce more sets in general. A good way to do this would be to- while keeping the new may wave of 18+ sets- start up a january wave, and get rid of the weird little march wave with like 3 sets. 5. Yeah, totally agree. For something like the X-wing, when it gets too big, it makes sense to scale it back (2018 to 2021). But the star destroyer should only be made smaller if you're trying to make it more affordable- and they clearly didn't have affordability as a priority with the new one. 6. A lot of this is subjective, but lego's notorious inability to print lighter colors on parts isn't. Fox's torso, all batman and captain america heads, etc. It's a company large enough to afford using a tiny bit more ink on each torso. 7. I actually disagree. Sets should be a good quality, yeah, but things aimed at kids are for kids. They're not supposed to be Hot Toys levels of detailing. 8. I agree, but feel like this sort of cuts into some of your earlier points. Lego can't make all their sets 18+ quality, large amounts of highly detailed minifigs, playability/functionality, and larger than previous ones without drastically increasing the prices. And ironically, my biggest issue with lego right now is that the sets are prohibitively expensive. Quote

Speeder Bike Showdown ($29.99): 2 speeder bikes, two tree builds, and a small build with a fallen trunk. Comes with Luke Skywalker (Endor), Princess Leia (Endor), Wicket, and a Scout Trooper. AT-ST Takedown ($79.99): AT-ST and two large trees with a log trap to smash something between them, as well as an ewok hut up top. Imperial Shuttle ($139.99): Largest- yet system imperial shuttle. Comes with Luke Skywalker (jumpsuit), Darth Vader, 2x Imperial Pilot, The emperor, and 2x royal guard. UCS/MBS: MBS Battle of Endor ($399.99): Build includes a large endor bunker (interior rooms include entrance hallway and control console room, generator, an armory/barracks, and an equipment room built up like the bunker rooms in the lego star wars game) bracketed by two large trees. Each tree contains a small portion of ewok village at the top, with the huts, roasting stick things, drumset, etc. Also included are two speeder bikes, an Ewok Glider, and a midi-scale AT-ST. Figures are 2x imperial officer, 2x imperial navy trooper, 1x AT-ST pilot, 2x stormtrooper, 3x scout trooper, Princess Leia (endor), Han Solo (endor), C-3PO, R2-D2, 2x rebel commando (one of whom is clearly Rex, down to the gauntlet printing), Paploo, Wicket, Teebo, Logray, and Kneesaa. Oh hell yes! May I also suggest an additional add on kind of set to your Battle of Endor idea so that people with not as large a budget will be able to get some kind of imperial bunker. Endor Imperial control post (£109.99): 2x stormtroopers, 1x scout trooper, 1x Death Star trooper, 1x Ranked Death Star Trooper, 1x imperial army officer and 2x rebel commandos. I will add that Lego have done a really good job this year at point 2. We have the buildable C3-PO and R2-D2, the Mando S3 sets in June, and the ‘Rebuild the Galaxy’ sets. I think I’d have liked to see a Battle of Naboo sort of set to go with the Sith Infiltrator and Droid Carrier GWP, say a Gian Speeder/Flash Speeder, or a Naboo Starfighter. Part of what made LSW exciting back in the day was the feeling that almost anything could be released next. Now, it's the same old boring-A cycle. And worse, the figure selections seem even more uninspired. I just want the old style winter waves to return: 2 battle packs, a $20, $30, $50, and $60 set, plus maybe the occasional oddity (midi-scale, microfighter, etc) Thank you. Completely agree on everything here. And ironically, my biggest issue with lego right now is that the sets are prohibitively expensive. I was reading from afar. I love creating set ideas, but I’m a little uninspired as I think LSW is rather stale right now. I don’t have the optimism or hope to be blown away by LEGO’s choices. All feels a bit safe, but I hope the summer wave really squashes this sentiment. 2. I think it needs to be considered above most things when considering what to release to celebrate anniversaries etc. The collection of sets for TPM celebration wave or all so individualistic, where I really think they needed to prioritise connectivity. The Sith Infiltrator has nothing to go with it, like it needed a new Naboo Fighter or better, a Naboo Royal Starship. The GWP troop carrier could have been great if there was a Naboo Forces Battle Pack or something similar on the shelves, too. 3. Completely fair response. Maybe including a niche character in an iconic set is the way forward. The Gungan Sub and AT-TE from 2012 and 2013 are again perfect examples for this. 5. Completely agree. The Star Destroyer should be a set that I personally want. The Coruscant Guard Gunship is another. I missed both sets back in the day, but these new versions just don’t cut it. That’s where my problem lies. 6. Yes, look I don’t like the helmet holes all that much but they’re fine. They most certainly don’t stop me buying the product. What stops me is laziness, clear inaccuracies, or just a worse product. This is becoming common. 7. I think what I mean is that they should be of a high standard, regardless. Just because a child is buying it doesn’t mean they should cut corners. They never did back in the day. 8. I will disagree with you here. They absolutely can strive for this, and bridge the gap between what they are doing right now. I’m not asking for larger sets, in fact I’d happily buy a set if it was slightly smaller. The problem is the sets are smaller, have bland figures, lack ingenuity and accuracy, yet cost a lot despite this. Quote

Well let’s ask the question, how could Yavin be improved? 1) Increase to ages 10+ so the set has more detail, and better building techniques 2) Reduce the price by £20-$20, minimum. Clearly, in my view, the issue is the playset felt too far away from 18+ as per above. Adults dig playsets, especially with fun building techniques and features. Just look at Boarding the Tantive IV. Good price, good features, accurate build. It can be done! Quote

I was thinking more so sets like the coruscant gunship which has a very clean, tiled off finish, and squeezed many more parts per square inch than its predecessors, but lacks any innovative interactive features, while still managing to look wonky with its jagged nose, protruding panels, and gaping carry handle hole, none of which were an issue in 2013. Sure, the snot techniques used to create the rounded front are more advanced than years past, and features a lot more pieces, but the result still looks decidedly worse. I like these ideas but I have a few things to note. Unless RTG is going to be a huge success I think that Lego’s going to be done with it after this August. I know that I’m beating a dead horse with this statement but I would honestly prefer and think it’s more likely that there’s a normal Stormtrooper battlepack next year. It would have been 6 years since the last one and 2025 has 3 significant things going for it that makes stormtroopers extremely relevant. 1) 45th anniversary of ESB, 2) 10th Anniversary of Rebels and 3) Andor S2. I don’t think Rey’s Speeder warrants a 4+ set. The design and build are simplistic enough already. I definitely see a couple of Acolyte sets happening. Or maybe just one. I think you are bang on the money with those MIDI scale predictions. For May the only thing that I think is unlikely is the UCS B-Wing. I feel like that slot is going to go to a UCS Jedi interceptor. I could absolutely see the Kashyyyk Battlepack happening. August I’m not sure that Lego will make a cloud car by itself. Simply because l’m not sure whether it’s a vehicle kids find cool enough by itself. I doubt there will be a FO Tie Fighter. Since we’re getting an imperial one which is too similar in design this August. Whilst I would love a republic Frigate I honestly see there being a Turbo Tank next year for £159.99. Figs being: Commander Gree, 41st Clone Trooper, Tarful, Luminara Unduli, Yoda (Preferably Quinlan Vos though) and B1 Battledroid (x2) Hoth is a very good shout. It’s been far too long. Though after Yavin’s backlash I don’t know whether they’d actually do that before making an imperial equivalent. Edited May 28, 2024 by CloneCommando99 Quote

I think the lack of connectivity between sets now has really gone down over the last decade. We had an X-Wing with no TIE fighter, Anakin’s Podracer a few years ago but no Sebulba’s podracer to go alongside it. We have an AT-TE but no Separatist ships to go along with it. I miss that connectivity we had in previous waves. On 5/25/2024 at 8:46 PM, ArrowBricks said: 3. I think there has been some effort to make sets more risky (The upcoming Dark Falcon and a Jedi Bob starfighter come to mind) and you have the diorama sets - but I get your point. I think the Star Wars line has become a bit stale over the last few years. Like I look back at stuff like the Freeco Speeder or Pirate ship or the Bounty Hunter Assault ship sets from the early Clone Wars line and wonder whether we would get stuff like that now. Just look at Bad Batch which hardly got any sets. Granted we do have a lot of content coming out but still. I also think there needs to be more innovation in sets. The 2006 Star Destroyer included an escape pod mechanism. The 2014 version included the bridge for the first time. The First Order Star Destroyer even included a mini turbo lift within the set! What does the upcoming version really bring to the table? It seems to be an almost carbon copy of the 2014 version. Quote

RTG - you could well be right, but I think given the creative freedom Lego will have combined with the inherent creativity of the story, we might see another set, or two. I would be very surprised to see a Stormtrooper BP purely because we have gotten them in the Tantive set AND likely in the rumoured October R2-KT set, too. Overkill. Plus, I think Night Troopers are highly likely and therefore two Imperial BP’s are, in my opinion, beyond the realm of possibility. Granted, I can acknowledge your rationale. The 4+ set was almost impossible. Maybe we could see something with Omega, instead. Again, unlikely. I’d be shocked if we see another Young Jedi Adventures set. I would be happy with a UCS Jedi Interceptor, but given I’ve predicted several ROTS 20th anniversary sets, and which Lego have notoriously undervalued past anniversary waves (see as late as 2022 AOTC, even TPM 25th Ann, and non-existent TPM 20th anniversary), I went against it. August was very difficult, and in there I struggled with my convictions internally. Your points are valid; back to the drawing board! However, I strongly predict a Turbo Tank will not be released. Lego are moving towards smaller vehicles, but many forget we had a Turbo Tank downscale in 2016, based on Kashyyyk too. Backlash, granted but it’s very likely the 2025 wave was pencilled in before the backlash revealed itself in its entirety. 11 hours ago, Tariq j said: Completely agree with this. We can also see it in the Mando S3 sets, and R2-D2 and C3-PO too. Even the Skiff - based on the configuration of figures - seems like it can pair with the UCS barge. Definitely stale - look at 2013 with the Jedi Defender Corvette, the Starhopper, and the Mandalorian Speeder. Heck, 2012 too with the KOTOR. Couldn’t agree more on your play feature assessment. A great example provided, too. Based on what you’ve said, I can tell our views and experiences of LSW over the years align. We want the same things in our sets and as a theme more broadly. I’d be really interested to see some of your future set ideas for 2025, and beyond with a focus on some of your comments/issues, too. Quote
CloneCommando99 Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 @ArrowBricks Sorry if my points came off as rude. But those are some good counterpoints. Anyway back to wish listing. In general things that I hope Lego does 1) Bring back the 3 battlepacks per year system. One villain BP, one Hero BP, and one super BP. Normal BPs release in Jan and the Super BP releases in August. 2) More Mechs that feel like vehicles instead of extensions to their figures. Much like this year’s X-Wing mech. Though preferably no mechs at all. 3) Imperial base sets that are compatible in a way akin to the Iron man halls of armour. Videogame CMF 1) Cal Kestis (Jedi Survivor): Dual moulded legs, arm printing, BD1 accessory, blaster and Blue Crossguard lightsaber. 2) Kyle Katarn (Dark Forces): Lightsaber, Blaster and moulded shoulder pad accessory. 3) Cere Junda (Jedi Survivor): Lightsaber, Holocron and Cape. 4) Nightsister Merrin (Jedi Fallen Order): Broken Crystal Ball, Hood piece, translucent green spell piece and Hair piece. 5) Second Sister (Jedi Fallen Order): Lightsaber, Helmet, Hairpiece and Holocron. 6) Dark Side armour Starkiller (TFU2): 2 lightsabers and Broken Vader helmet. 7) Boss (Republic Commando) 8) Scorch (Republic Commando) 9) Sev (Republic Commando) 10) Fixer (Republic Commando) 11) Rebel Iden Versio (BF2): Hair piece and Pilot helmet. 12) Darth Nihillus (KOTOR) Lightsaber. Novels and Comics CMF 1) Mara Jade 2) Random High Republic Jedi from comics 3) Abeloth 4) Senior Captain Thrawn (Ascendancy Trilogy) 5) Arc Trooper Alpha (CW Comics) 6) Grand Admiral Pellaeon 7) Jaina Solo 8) Jacen Solo (Darth Caedus) 9) Admiral Ar’alani (Ascendancy Trilogy) 10) Doctor Aphra 11) Mr Bones 12) Sixth Brother 2025 January predictions: Venator microfighter (£12.99): Admiral Yularen. Captain Rex Brickheadz (£12.99) Stormtrooper Battlepack (£19.99): 3x stormtroopers and a stormtrooper Commander. Acolyte Set (£49.99-79.99) Quote
