God I'd kill for a smoke kit like that in Lego. It gets particularly amazing when it starts draining out of the cylinders. Can you imagine doing something like this in our medium? I have to imagine that the piping would all need to be aftermarket, but I am still really intrigued.

Meh, it needs to alternate coming from the front or rear of the cylinder depending on the stroke. And only for starting out.

This is your lucky day, because such a device exists! It's part of the Mould King 12012 Christmas Train set: It's an ultrasound vapor generator that turns water into... (cold) vapor.

I have no idea how good or reliable this device works though. It seems to be pretty big (4 wide) so this won't work very well for 6w steam engines.

I posted details on my ultrasonic mist "steam" generator several weeks ago here:

After a lot of trial and error, it seems reliable. I made it 4x5 studs because it fit my application but being 3D printed, it could be made 3 wide without difficulty, it depends on how much water (run time) you want and what space it has to fit. The ultrasonic disc I used is about 19mm in diameter.
