Since it's missing the "comb" at the top and is quite minimalistic I think the mold is fairly well perfect, all it needs is some black and silver printing for the comb. Its the plainest printing of any mando helmet so far. I can see it could have been based on concept for the first release, but they should undoubtedly have revisited it for the Razor Crest and if they don't update it for the 2021 set I will riot. Quote

In Disney’s eyes, Star Wars is about making money first (mostly from toys), and everything else second. Sad but true, the mandalorian really is the first Disney era project to put story telling first. The fact that John Favreau had to fight to keep baby yoda off the shelves until this year is proof. The difference, as you say, is Lucas spent his time getting a wellmade story right first. Disney have made a sequel trilogy that was rushed out to cash in on their investment, a prequel to ANH and a solo film (pun intended) about the best loved charachter... yes you can see their ploy pretty clearly. This is reflected in the sets. Recolours and minor updates of Falcons, X Wings and TIEs. No wonder we afols feel like lego churn out the same stuff year on year. The creative deficit is Disney/lucasfilm's, not Lego's. I do believe the Sequels will become very poorly represented in future waves because they just don't have the staying power of the OT or even the PT. The Mandalorian will become the flagship of SW. Season 2 will be make or break. I really hope they make. Quote

Redroe Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 (edited) I have to say... unboxed my Ponda Baba today and I'm apalled by the torso print. I can't even tell what colour it's meant to be, tan or white. Research makes me think it's tan but it is by far the worst opacity print I've ever got. And this in a high end set. Also I wonder what makes them decide whether to go with the rubbery head material or hard plastic? I was surprised by Labria being rubber and expected Ponda to be the same but no. 2 hours ago, Guyon2002 said: Don't go blaming this on Disney only, Star Wars has always been like this. Most of LEGO's printing has decreased in quality over the last few years, just because it's an expensive set doesn't mean the prints are of a higher quality That said it's really sad how low LEGO's print quality has fallen over the last few years, especially something like Mercy's faceprint in the Overwatch sets was just plain unacceptable! With LEGO being as expensive as it is we should at least be able to expect the same level of print quality as advertised on the box. 15 minutes ago, Redroe said: Agreed but as I said George crafted a good story that was worth making toys of. It wasn't an example of ways the story could be improved, if we we're going to discuss that we'll never stop It's just one of the more well known examples of story decisions in Star Wars being driven by toy sales. I'm not saying Disney did everything right with Star Wars but I don't like it when people blame them for doing something that Star Wars has always done. Quote

As for the rubber vs plastic, I imagine it's one of two things: either the figure has features that would be liable to snapping off easily (Labria's horns, Plo Koon's tendrils) or the rubber is easier to get into a mould to make sharper details. Purely speculating though. Star Wars has always been about merchandising, but I don't think the Disney era has been all bad. Eckhart's Ladder did a good video on this recently where he talked about the new things in Rogue One in comparison with the sequels, and it's almost night and day. Solo and Mandalorian have some cool additions to the universe as well. I do think that Disney+ and the High Republic stuff will lead to the Mouse taking more risks with Star Wars as the financial stakes are slightly lower, which can only be a good thing. Quote

But the newest rebel pilot torso seems to have stronger printing than its immediate predecessor, unless i just got one from a good batch (I only have one of the newest so can't compare). Tan-on-orange is a new one on me, but I am so disappointed to see it so bad. 33 minutes ago, TeddytheSpoon said: I do think that Disney+ and the High Republic stuff will lead to the Mouse taking more risks with Star Wars They took a risk with TLJ and look what happened! Corporate greed is directly to blame for what seems to be agreed as the failure (not commercially) of Disney's Star Wars. If they had stuck to a single trilogy, properly planned and without the backstage bloodbath over directors, and with a proper production window between films, before going onto spinoffs, we would probably be in a much happier place. The rest of it really disappointed me. I disliked the political commentary being so to-the-fore, Finn and Poe are left without proper characters in favour of new faces like Rose and Holdo. Snoke's death was a shock moment but it would prove a narrative cul-de-sac (as TROS would prove: grandfather? Really?). Hux is rewritten from a zealot to an idiot, Phasma's part is edited into incoherence and the second act gets totally lost with really odd offbeat comedy from Del Toro. The good moments of it are really good but the bad moments are really obvious. TROS is less good overall but at least more consistent. And i know disney didn't start the marketing frenzy over SW, never suggested they did. What I do suggest is that they should have earned their investment back by making a quality product first and not flooding the market with undercooked content. Ok... PT quality is questionable to say the least but at least it is a story told with conviction. Quote

Overall I am pleased with the fig selection in the cantina but some big misses. No arm printing on Greedo, some bleed over on some painting, not a dual molded leg in sight. Lego’s decisions on new moulds in this theme confuse me sometimes, like designing a new Stormtrooper helmet but not an updated P2 clone trooper one that can support the various helmet attachments which have been in circulation forever. I concur it’s unlikely we’ll see a new mould for Mando, but the beskar variant should look fantastic as long as they print it correctly and perhaps recolour the helmet and give it some updated printing. I’m quite keen to see what the Mandalorian “Hero Ship / Transport” set entails. Figure-wise, Beskar Mando and 1 or 2 other minifigures are my guess. An updated Greef or Cara would be acceptable, but hopefully we’ll see characters not yet produced! The ITT seems like the perfect setting for this set, but I can see Lego reserving a vehicle like that for the £40-50 price point to include more Imperial troopers. On the topic of SW being driven by merchandise, I never particularly found it to be an issue in the past mainly because of the OT / PT / TCW having such fantastic vehicle designs that you’d want a toy of, and this extends to character designs too. I found the ST to be creatively stagnant in this regard, though that’s purely subjective. Edited October 23, 2020 by T21Typhoon Quote

For all the stick they get, the prequels were spread over 8 years, were properly planned and had a single creative vision behind them. The sequels were released within four years and with two or three different directions suggested by the directors. The result is what I'm gonna call story whiplash - going one way only to be pulled in another and then back again. They should've done something similar to the Mandalorian IMO and had a Favreau or Filoni in charge of the story, and you can have whatever director you want to give the film its own schtick. ANYWAY. I like the idea of the hero vehicle being the ITT looking thing from the second trailer. I reckon they could make it fit the $30ish price range well and you could easily have Mando, Greef, Cara and/or a scout trooper in there. I would also like to lend my support to anything GNK related. Kit Figsto Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 About the Mando set, I do think given how the other sets for the wave are trending, getting 3-4 figures in a $30 set is very possible. In the past, if it was a vehicle, I'd guess 3 tops, but I think Mando plus at least two other heroes and some sort of adversary is possible. Curious to see more details on it. Quote
