jdubbs Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 I'm not saying Lucasfilm/Disney isn't secretive about certain plot points, characters, etc., to the point of saying "you can't release this until X date". Of course that happens; we saw it happen with The Child, and with stuff like Luke's appearance at the end of TFA, Kylo/Ben's appearance in the final battle of Exogol, Rey's yellow lightsaber, and so on. But that is entirely different from them saying "we're not going to let you do a Cobb figure, full stop." Or, "We're not going to let you put out prequel sets any more." Or, "You must release this many X-Wings and that many landspeeders each year." Which is what a lot of people here seem to think... it's just part of the same tired, false narrative that evil overlord Disney micromanages LEGO into all the bad decisions LEGO makes... The far more plausible explanation is that Cobb doesn't appear in the set because a) LEGO didn't know about him in time to do a new print for a Jan 2021 release, or b) LEGO is cheap and didn't want to budget a second new fig print in a $30 set, or c) LEGO felt the Tusken actually fit better in a set with two Tusken-specific builds, or d) LEGO just didn't see the appeal of a fig that seemingly appears in just one episode, and looks a whole lot like Boba/Mando/the 4 Mando figs released last year. Take your pick. Quote

Sure, it seems like they're selling well, but "like no lego sets ever before in the history of their company" might be a bit of an exaggeration. As for why we aren't getting many sets for the extremely specific list you've made of every on-screen canon besides the OT and ST: Rogue one and solo each had at least one, (with solo having 2 and rogue one having a fair amount of sets in the january wave) wave(s) of sets, like the sequels lego is going to wait a while before making more for them. We have a mandalorian set coming out. Rebels and Clone wars are animated series and lego doesn't usually do many sets for those after they finish airing. The CW movie 1) was almost as bad as the holiday special, 2) got a massive wave of sets upon it's release and 3) is another animated property, so I'd imagine the same rule applies as with the shows. I knew someone would was going to cite the AAT and 501st sets as reasons for more prequel sets, and I wanted to bring up the flip side of that argument. There aren't really any other sets that would sell that well at all. The primary reason the AAT is selling well is because of the figures. I am all but certain people aren't that excited to buy an AAT that looks okay but not incredible, people are primarily getting it for the 332nd and Ahsoka figures. If the figures were like, Anakin, Obi-Wan and two droids, I would bet that set would be sitting on the shelves all year. So next year, if they stuck Ahsoka in a similar set, I highly, highly doubt it sells that well, unless it comes with another exclusive figure. Ditto with the 501st set, they could re-skin that as a 212th or Wolfpack set and it'd probably do well, maybe not as well, but people would still hoard it. After that, there aren't going to be any prequel sets that the demand is so high that it'll fly off the shelves. Most of the highly requested prequel sets are large price point items: Jango Fett's Slave I (you don't need multiples of those), the Geonosis arena (you don't need multiples of those), an AT-TE and a Republic Gunship (which I think would sell well, and I think they should get a re-release, but for whatever reason at those price points I think Lego just sees an AT-AT or a Falcon as more of a sure-seller. We only get one or two sets at a high price point during each wave, and yes, I think they should've made room for those, but it honestly might be better if they wait until now, since an X-Wing was like $80 two years ago. I shudder to think of what an AT-TE or Gunship would've cost at those prices). And when it comes to stuff that has almost direct comparables between the OT/PT, it's sort of the same issue. An ARC-170, Republic Y-Wing, Venator cruiser, etc all have almost exact copies in the OT and ST, I'm not saying that's a bad thing, that's how it was designed. The issue, like I said with the Gunship/AT-Te, is that people aren't going to buy tons and tons of them because they're prohibitively expensive. So if most prequel/CW fans are buying one, maybe two of some of those, there's also going to be a handful of OT fans that aren't buying it because they'd rather an X-Wing, Y-Wing, Star Destroyer, etc. I think that they should make room to replace an X-Wing with an ARC-170 every 4-5 years, but I can understand why they don't. An X-Wing is likely to outsell an ARC-170, and they only have room for one in a wave. I get that there's underrepresentation for some of the background ships/vehicles in the prequels, but realistically, I don't think it would sell that well. Stuff like the Naboo landing craft, Galactic Marine tank, Padme's ship from Episode II and III - they didn't really play a largely significant role in the story. Heck, something like Anakin's podracer or the AT-AP were warming the shelves for basically all of last year at stores around me, and those hadn't seen a release for at least 8-10 years. If something as well-known as one of those models wasn't a sure-fire seller, who's to say that a $120 set that ultimately was even less significant to the film would sell well either? I have no idea about actual sales numbers, obviously, but that's just what I saw anecdotally. Even the OT doesn't really get background vehicles like that, the only real examples were the TIE variants or something like the Imperial V-Wing, but the era in which we were getting those was one where we also were getting tons of Clone Wars and prequel stuff. I guess the Skyhopper, but that's only one set. And lastly, about the Cobb Vanth thing, we got Cara Dune in a Force Friday set last year, which was over two months before she actually appeared. If I remember right, she didn't show up until the 4th episode, which premiered in like December. I agree that she might've been less spoiler-y than Vanth, just because of Vanth's armor, but I think they could've included him if they really wanted. Of course, that's assuming that Lego knew about him, since it appears that they don't always get complete descriptions/concept art for new characters/ships. So this Jan wave I expect no surprise characters or scenes from Mando. The summer wave however, that's when I expect to see some of those additional characters and scenes. Especially with LEGO sets leaking months ahead of time (we're almost 3 months away from the Feb launch) it can easily be the way stuff is "announced" and if the Feb mando set was say something from the final episode, well then huge spoiler. Just like how the Razorcrest was rushed in with The Child so they could get that out as soon as they could but late enough that it wouldn't spoil the show. However 3 months out from the summer wave means that all the episodes have aired and people are wanting Mando sets and have already bought the ones on the market. Then those sets won't be huge spoilers because the episodes have already aired. Also they may want to see how much something or someone appears for even future waves. Like Cobb Vanths speeder, if he's in a few episodes and he'll likely be in Season 3 then I could see a microfighter of his speeder ore being in a set but if he's a one episode appearance then they may not want to go through and make the prints for a microfighter figure and just choose something else. I don't know any other sub-theme within SW that repeats one of the main character in all sets. To be fair, it is called “The Mandalorian”, so having the titular characters in most of that sub-theme’s sets does make sense. Lego does the same thing with most of their themes, not just Star Wars, like The Lego Batman Movie or Harry Potter for example. And technically speaking, he hasn’t appeared in every set from this sub-theme. He wasn’t in the Battle Pack and wasn’t in The Child set. Besides, the difference between this and other sub-themes is that the show follows Mando around intimately and almost exclusively so nearly any scene that gets turned into a set has to include him. Solo, for example, didn’t exclusively follow Han around the entire time, which is why he wasn’t included in four of the system scale sets from that movie. Of course, I’ll probably be agreeing with you if I wind up having over five of the same Mando minifigure like I do with Emmet from The Lego Movie. 56 minutes ago, jdubbs said: This is not the only Mando set in 2021, so it's certainly possible Cobb will appear later in the year. It’s a real shame that Lego isn’t capitalizing on Mando’s success as much as they could be. Funko and Hasbro have done a fairly good job covering the show. I guess Lego’s somewhat limited on vehicular sets they could do (Gideon’s TIE Fighter, ITT, more speeder bikes, Cobb’s speeder, and some random stuff that made brief appearances) and they don’t seem to like doing playsets in Star Wars too often, which probably have more set potential. (The Nevarro cantina, Mandalorian covert/forge, the lava river, Kuill’s farm with the Blurrgs, or the ice cave with the spiders.) Maybe the poor Rebels set sales scared Lego off from doing too many sets based off of the shows? Edited November 12, 2020 by The Stud Quote

If we got an ITT, it'd probably be based on the scene from the trailer in S2, which would include him, and the only enemy vehicle that they'd probably do would be Gideon's TIE, which I think would make a ton of sense to include Mando in. I guess if they did a New Republic X-Wing they wouldn't need to include him, but I don't really see them doing that when people would likely rather get a Rebellion/Resistance one with Luke or Poe or Wedge or whoever. I disagree there are ton of PT and CW sets that would fly of the shelfs, just make any clone bp and you are literally printing money, example wolf company. Those simple old cw clones made 20000 $ worth of sales just in last 6 months on BL alone(and thats just 1 variant of them). You can see people making thousands by selling custom minifigs and sets cause lego wont make them. Any clone or separatist vehicle would sell like hotcakes example MTT,and if lego has doubts they can just throw in highly wanted figure like rex or cody phase 2,fives etc in 120$ sets. if they cant afford new molds they can re-release old figures or add more details. I can write a 10 page essay for figures solely based on their last 6 month bricklink sales, and lego has this data cause they own the site now. AAT is incredible imo and yeah some people got them for figures, but most people buy sets only for figures, just imagine if razor crest didnt include the child their sales would be cut in half while brickbuilt the child would sell twice as much. Not cause 1 set is better than other but solely cause of 1 figure. Also without ahsoka or her clone set would be 30$ and people would still mass buy it. I disagree with your definition of large price point cause jango fett slave 1 would cost only around 70$-120$ which is 1/8 of actually large price point sets like 800$ star destroyer, most of PT fans are in mid 20ies +/- 8 years, they have their own jobs and money now to buy those sets. And yeah you dont need multiple jango slave 1,but that argument makes no sense cause you dont need multiple boba fett slave 1 and i am sure it would be sold the same or better. I am pretty sure more people would buy 120$ gunship/ and multiple of it than 120$ AT-AT thats on sale now. I wouldnt call them background vehicles from PT,we have 0 lucrehulks that appeared in 4 movies and 12+ episodes of 2008 cw with 0 sets and we dont know if it would sell well cause they arent giving us a chance, they made horrible ucs set back in 2010 of obi wans starfighter that should not be in ucs form in the first place, and didnt even include a figure,it flopped and they gave up on us. And you are calling at-ap significant clone vehicle,it is so unsignificant they didnt even care to put it in any of the clone wars episodes, and was basically irrelevant in movies. Quote

Even though I'd prefer dark metal grey - silver would be more accurate and I think it does look lighter. No way to tell for sure though; even with clear pictures a colour can look different just due to lightning.. Torso and leg look like black and armor prints + helmet + arms in either of the two metal colours. Which I think is how they should have done it. The questions are: will the helmet be updated? (please please, otherwise I gotta order from 3rd party which I avoided now for ever...) and: Jetpack yes no? If so - different cape? Unfortunately I cannt make out anything from the pictures. _______________________________________________________________-____________________________________________ about the complaints: from the OT we just now get certain obscure characters rarely as a side figure, like Dondanna or Bail Organa. We just got 1(!!) Mon Mothma so far (which was years ago with competely not special parts. She was literally one of just 3 women in the OT who had lines...). From Rebels, TCW or the smaller movies, there's characters we never got and likely will never get: Saw Guerrera, the Solo villain, the awesome feminist droid, Jyn Ersos father, ... Guys and gals: it's a toy company. I think characters like Dondanna are really just a treat for a minority of fans, due to the high popularity of the OT sets. And the fact that they seem to sell anyway. I mean we didn't even got an aunt Beru yet. For Rebels there's soooo many characters and updates we NEVER got. Not even a season 2 update for the protagonist. So I'm just happy we did get Thrawn and blind Kanan and that I dont have to somehow MOC them myself. Cobb whatever will likely not be such a striking character. If the Mandalorian really gets cult status, maybe we do get a Kulil at some point. Edited November 12, 2020 by Kim-Kwang-Seok Quote
