Honestly I have a hunch that LEGO's poor treatment of the Indy franchise this year (despite the excellent quality of the few sets we did receive) is a product of Disney's poor marketing of the new film. I don't think Disney has a good handle on the franchise, which could explain why the merchandise rollout was perplexingly uneven.

I think this was definitely Disney. I've been collecting the Hasbro figures that have come out as well and no figures other than Indy and Short Round came from Temple of Doom for instance, so they have absolutely clamped down on what to portray from these movies as to not cause any controversy. This makes sense when we see what happened to the Temple of Doom LEGO set. I wanted that set so badly, I also try not to think about it...lol.

Don't get me wrong but Disney might end Indiana Jones franchise. Now they try to change Star Wars something completely different, no one knows what. ALSO we will se fall of Marvel (but that is a very good thing). Disney had this animation movie "Buzz Lightyear" and it had 1 very good set. XL-15 spaceship.

About that temple... I have heard that there might be some license issues. Some think that movie too violent because they rip the heart of. Also Disney might fear this political era where we are now - that it might upset some tripe somewhere / and activist. This kind of thing happened to Jabba the Hutt's palace. It almost destroyed LEGO's excellent reputation biggest toy in the world.

...

Here is 1 of the best videos I have ever seen about lego set.

Would like to see it continue, but I personally don't need another line. One set of Indy is enough for me, glad I waited, finally picked up the Raiders of the Lost Arc set for under $100 at Costco. $50 off!

I think Disney owns rights for Indiana Jones movies and tv shows... and TLG and Disney work together. So I would be surprised if won't see anymore IJ sets. I am planning to buy 2 Golden Idol temples and make some kind of MOC out of them.

Disney has so many Films, Series and Franchises, that I don´t think they care about this one in particular to get released again - I mean they even dumped the sets for the new film so I am pretty sure that it is done for the near future at least. Maybe Disney decides to make a relaunch or series of Indiana one day and we get sets for this. But for now, we won´t see any I think.

I finally got all three Indy sets for Lego Insider Weekend last month but didn't get around to building them recently. I just finished the Temple of the Golden Idol diorama last night and that's probably one of the best sets I've built all year. Really, all three sets were incredibly solid and intricate. I don't want to sound like a broken record and complain again about how Lego dropped the ball with this reboot, but I just would have loved to have seen more Indy sets with this level of quality.

@peter.keith on Instagram is planning on posting instructions for the cancelled Temple of Doom set on Rebrickable so if you're craving more like me, be sure to keep an eye out.

Well Indiana Jones is the Adventure movies franchise. A massive thing... it would be very weird to let that go. Same with Star Wars.

Generally speaking, i always thought about Indiana Jones as one of these franchises that will go on forever because it's well-established and famous worldwide. So sooner or later it should continue, maybe with new actors, maybe with spin-offs. Because it would be dumb to let go of such a brand, right? That's why we keep seeing things comming from LOTR, Harry Potter, GoT, POTC, Star Wars and other franchises.

When it comes to Lego, there is always a chance that we get sets of any of these franchises (bar GoT) when a new movie or show is released. Or maybe there will be anniversary set or big AFOL set like Rivendell.

Hope it's not to much wishful thinking on my part and that it does not take a decade before we get new Indiana Jones sets (Or a new POTC movie is released :pir_laugh2:). Fingers crossed!

I think Disney will reboot Indiana Jones after Harrison Ford has past away. Will they fight against Nazis, maybe?

With James Bond they are rebooting the franchise. It is interesting to see how much they will change eventually. Indiana Jones is whole adventure genre. It has taken ideas from other movies BUT it is unique thing. That temple, Golden Idol is probably the best set I have ever build. Let's hope that we will get more sets - BUT even more I hope they will start whole franchise again.

Maybe Indiana Jones junior, age 14-15 and then he will grow up movie by movie. Also Marion, I hope she will get a BIG role. Like that LEGO figure in new Orient Express train. Which is also very much an adventure set. Hercule Poirot and so on.

Yeah. I know I’ve kept harping about it since March, but it’s still true: this has been by far TLG’s biggest mishandling of a major franchise  The three sets are among the best released this year no doubt, but the fact that this puny wave is all we’re ever gonna get and that they made us wait for an additional year for NOTHING still maddens me :hmpf_bad:

2023 was a great year for LEGO, actually my favourite ever, but 2024 might already top it, mostly thanks to Barad-dûr, the Dune set, the new Hagrid’s Hut, the Snow White cottage, Animal Crossing, the Mando S3 sets, and the SW anniversary figures. If there were Indy sets in 24, it would definitely beat this year. Since there won’t be any, it’ll depend on the licensed CMF series, the 2HY sets for Marvel and HP, and whether the Zelda set gets made. Still a fairly good chance!

No, actually not. Dune was mishandled even more. The only thing we get is one crappy 18+ set (sorry, for everyone liking it but it's really one vehicle for horrendous price) that has at least good minifigures but the build is really weak. Dune is a definition of a franchise that has to bu a full theme.

In fairness to Lego, it was likely Disney's fault the theme ended as abruptly as it did. They did very little merchandising across the board and they cancelled all other Indy projects so that Lucasfilm could focus exclusively on fixing Star Wars. And Disney's mishandling of Dial of Destiny's release pretty much doomed any chance it had of doing well at the box office. Once that underperformed there was pretty much no chance of any additional sets.

Disagree hard on this. Yeah, it’s just one set, but it’s a lovely build and all the major characters people wanted are represented here :sweet: With Indy, we only got three of the 10+ sidekicks, just one out of five main antagonists, and no named minions. At least minifig-wise Dune with its one set is better represented than Indy

Only doing 3 sets in total must’ve been a mutual decision though. I doubt Disney outright prohibited TLG from releasing more :laugh_hard:

I’m surprised we haven’t received any additional context around why this theme was approached the way it did, both in terms of the Temple of Doom as well as Dial of Destiny. Lego has been more open as of late (e.g. stuff like Fan Media Days) but I suppose they want to keep this particular topic close to the chest.

We’ve all seen film tie-in sets in the past that seem like low effort but the Indy wave was straight-up fantastic all the way through. My feelings on DoD are certainly mixed but at least one tie-in set would’ve been nice to see.

Posted (edited)

If you think about it, 2 of the sets are for kids to play. 1 for adults to display.

More playsets would mean also MORE villains. That might be problematic for TLG and Disney. Even if they want to make more sets, they have to think what if Indiana Jones comes very popular in lego. AND why would you want to stop whole franchise for this 5th movie...

That’s one thing, but the question I want answered more than any other in regards to the entire Indy debacle is: where did the four set numbers (77016-19) that Promobricks reported on come from? They were the only source to ever bring them up, leading me to believe these never existed in the first place. Was this a misunderstanding? Did their source lie? Did the sets exist at some point, but were cancelled before anybody else could catch wind of them? EXPLAIN YOURSELVES

You could ask maxbautde on Instagram. He recently asked for Q&A questions. Don't know if this is still running (I don't use Insta). He is from promobricks.

Yeah, I want to know as well.

With the ToD cancellation, there’s at least a reason that’s most likely the case (LF pulling the plug last minute, as it appears Hasbro also cancelled a Mola Ram figure in the 11th hour), which would also explain why LEGO was more open about that cancellation than most (I feel like them allowing LAN members to show leaked pictures could’ve been a very subtle way of saying “hey, we were all good to release this”).

But I’m still thoroughly confused why we didn’t get any DoD sets at all.  A super easy 4 wave series could’ve been a cheap parade scene with horse and motorcycle, a $30-40 tuk-tuk chase, and then 2 of Archimedes’ tomb, the train from the opening, Voller’s plane, or Renaldo’s boat.

That’d knock out essentially every major character with costume variants of Indy and Helena, and I think even if someone didn’t care for the movie (I happened to love it), the builds would still be unique and exciting enough to entice people to buy it.

Well, there was The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, sadly the DVD version got rid of Old Indy, played by George Hall. On DVD and other digital media, it can be found by the name "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones".

My point was that Indiana Jones Franchise is BIG. As James Bond is, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Batman and so on... Ghostbusters. It would be terrible idea to just forget that character.

If we think adventure movies - we have to compare Indy to those movies. There is Lara Croft and National Treasure, Mummy and many others BUT Indy is in different level. TLG don't want that children play with I.J. legos. They could make an adventure animation series for kids about indy and the nazis. It does not have to be war - it can be greatest adventure ever.

Sure, let's turn a PG film franchise into typical Saturday morning kids fare - featuring Nazis! You know, the guys who killed MILLIONS of innocent people and started a whole war because "reasons"? The same guys who brainwashed an entire population and subjugated many other nations because they wanted to rule the world and destroy anyone who thought / looked / sounded different than the their idea of the ideal human? Believe it or not (there are people who don't, sadly), we are all still feeling the repercussions of WWII, it's immediate aftermath, and the Nazi's policies.

Don't think this idea of a TV show featuring Nazis' hasn't been tried before: The show old show "Hogan's Heroes' managed to turn them into bumbling idiots - and it could not be made today. And if you think the Soviets would be a better idea as villians, I want to bring your attention Stalin's infamous purges and the artificial famines of the 1930's in the USSR, along with the removal of anything and everything from the satellite countries to bolster Russia after the war. (They removed entire FACTORIES from the Russia controlled zones to the USSR.... and I mean whole buildings!) Stalin was cut from the same cloth as Hitler, and probably killed just as many of his own people, but in different ways.

Forget it... it isn't going to happen.

I never liked this idea, personally. Star Wars, for instance, can be immortal because it's more about the world than any specific character. Indiana Jones is a pretty standard world aside from, well, Indiana Jones. And Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones. I don't think you can have one without the other, nor do I think they should try. (Though they will.... I gurantee you we're less than a decade out from a reboot)

Just make an original adventure movie.

I dunno if it was just the release, I saw PLENTY of marketing. People who hadn't seen the first four were asking me if they should go see it. I think the movie itself just wasn't as good as people were expecting.

No. First of all, a working ornithopter as an official set is incredible (and what were you expecting the set to be, if your issue is that it's one vehicle? Did you want multiple, worse ornithopters? The much less iconic larger ships?).

Second, Dune really skirts the edge of what lego can do maturity wise. While the movie skirts around some of the sexual references regarding the baron's interests, it's still a much darker and more mature film than your average marvel or star wars movie. And maybe a bigger difference than that, it's not a fun action or adventure movie. Dune is a tragedy. And when people are killed, it's generally not blasters or lightsabers. It's knives. I'm pleasantly surprised we managed to get even an icons set.

Yes, they were both terrible groups. No one is disputing that. (I mean... no one here, anyway. I've met a good number of people who deluded themselves into disputing the latter group and I know there are some who somehow dispute the former).

But I don't think there's anything wrong with them showing up as villains in animated shows (Obviously not preschooler shows, but you get the point).

Why does it have to be Nazis? Indiana Jones is about Adventure, not about Nazis. You can replace them just by any generic bad guy (and especially in a series made for kids you don´t need to have one in every episode). For instance you could just have someone that wants the treasures for his own collection like the opponents in Lego´s inhouse-Adventurers series.
