Ok wow I don't know if this is news but I just heard of this

Spoiler

This is a time travel movie

Pictures from the filming location show roman soldiers fighting. And gladiators as well.

Like literally...

You know what this could mean for LEGO sets

You know, this come back would be nice if we got sets based on the first 4 films this summer, around 6-7 sets as a tease before Indy 5 sets in 2023. Though I'm not sure if Lego can do it, I still don't undertsand what's going on with the merchandise rights side for the first 4 films between Disney and Paramount Pictures. Like I get it, PP has distribution rights for the first 4 but I'm not sure about merch.

Ok, I decided to post this. Take it with the BIGGEST GRAIN OF SALT EVER, because even I don't know if it's legit, but Today, I went to a Lego store, the manager is a good friend of mine, he is one of the reasons I got out of my dark ages, and while we were discussing about the sales of the sets, in which he said Mario and Marvel were the most popular, he told me that he heard Indiana Jones will return this summer with multiple sets, and I asked him if he means Indy 5 sets, which I told him it got delayed to 2023 and he said he knows that but these sets are not based on Indy 5, they are based on the original trilogy. That's all he told me, he heard we are getting, and here it is, 6 sets based on the original Indiana Jones trilogy, this summer. I trust him and told him he better not joke about this and he said he is sure about it. If this turns out to be false it's all on me, so take it with a BIG grain of salt. But if it's real, well this is a good Christmas gift, I guess.

It's good enough. If this turns out to be true (which I really hope), then hail the lord.

If this is true, 2022 could be an amazing year  If there‘s one theme I wish I could resurrect, it‘s this one

I would like LOTR, but Indy is second and more likely. If any known leaker can look into this, if they heard something similar, it would be appreciated.

As for possible remakes, a new temple of doom would be nice. Though I will be dissapointed if we don't get Indy 4 remakes too, since I actually like it.

Since I was a little boy, I had a fantasy of going into the Lego Store and buying all the sets from a theme immediately. I thought that was what would happen when Lego Mario came out, but we all know why that might be an exception, regardless of quality.

If this rumor is true, I will fulfill that dream.

However, I have a lot of reservations about this. I think that the original sets are so spectacular, with Temple Escape and Temple of the Crystal Skull as the two highlights, that I am not sure of how much I COULD like these new ones. There are ideas this theme did which have never been officially done before or since. Indiana Jones as he exists now is one of the very best minifigures ever designed and I don't think any new interpretation could match.

I can already see the new Temple Escape being $80-100 instead of 60 and being a smaller set densely packed with detail from tiny parts, unlike the earlier one which was cheaper and larger but with a lot of BURPS and 16x16 technic bricks.

The more I think about it, the more I think this would have in common with Batman I vs DC Superheroes. Yes, the new line has granted us many great things, but (maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia) just about all of the original sets are such great designs. Were there a lot of great ideas for sets that never came to be? Yes. Were they limited by the older-style of set waves/pricing and could have easily benefitted from having today's giant D2C sets? Absolutely, but no matter how many new DC sets they make (which will probably still be very few with the way things are going), and no matter how great and obscure the figures get, the 2006 line is held in high regard for a reason.

Basically, remember how when Batman finally came back, that first 2012 wave was almost nothing but remakes of the original sets that were both smaller and worse looking in just about every aspect? This is what I DESPARATELY hope they avoid with an Indiana Jones reboot.

If we do get sets based on the original 3 films, there would pretty much have to be remakes in there.

Off the top of my head, the only major scenes/vehicles that we never got were:
Raiders - map room (I could see this as a set), submarine/boat (unlikely), Nepal bar fight (possible but not super likely in my opinion), opening of the Ark (highly unlikely) and some of the vehicles in the truck chase (which wouldn't warrant a set, they would just be in a truck chase set)

ToD - cargo plane (possible, but if they were going to do a plane, I would bet they do the plane chase from Last Crusade), bridge battle (I could see this as a set, similar to the $20-30 Star Wars duel sets), Pankot Palace (I could maybe a set based on one of the sleeping rooms with a secret passage...but that doesn't seem super likely), and Club Obi-Wan (unlikely as a set)

Last Crusade - circus train (possible but unlikely), Panama Hat's boat (highly unlikely), the library in Venice (unlikely), tank chase (not going to happen), Temple of the Grail (I could really see this being a set), and Castle Brunwald (I could maybe see a set with a fireplace build and an escape hatch or something, but I don't think it's as likely).

Of those sets, I only see three (Map Room, Bridge Battle, Grail Temple) that would really work well as stand-alone sets and would be recognizable enough to where they'd be popular.  Most everything else is either too niche, too violent, or doesn't have enough "stuff" happening to warrant a set.

Putting my predictions in a spoiler below, just to save space.

If we did get six sets, my prediction is that we'd get the Temple Escape, Truck Chase, and Motorcycle Chase for sure.  From there, I think there has to be at least one ToD set, so I could see either the Temple itself, the car chase (that might be too many chases in one wave), or bridge battle.  I'd personally pick the bridge battle scene, and then reserve the largest price point for the Grail Temple ($130-150 set).  The last set would need to be something mid-sized ($50-60), so I would say either a remake of the Well of Souls, the boat chase or the plane chase, or maybe the Nepal bar fight.

In a vacuum, I'd agree, but for selfish reasons I'd go with Indy  The main reason is the current set-up in my LEGO room, if LOTR ever came back I'd have to rearrange an ungodly amount of sets and I wouldn't much fancy that

Replace one of them with a KotCS set and this would be an excellent wave

I’m still hoping for new Lego Indiana Jones sets in 2022/2023. My wallet on the other hand? Not so much.

I really regret not being as interested in the original sets when they were still available.

I wasn't even thinking of that, but that would be perfect to fill the $50-60 price slot in that hypothetical wave.  A remake of the River Chase or Jungle Cutter would be pretty nice, and a good way to get Marion, Mutt, and Irina Spalko.

I would absolutely love for this theme to return, its second to me behind LOTR for a return. I’ve always thought about buying the retired sets but have been holding hope since the new film was announced that we’d get more sets. If we don’t, I may just have to buy all the classics anyway.

If we get new Indiana Jones sets, I hope Indy will have a hat+hair combo.

Am I the only one who finds it crazy that all three of the moulds created specifically for the original Indy minifig (fedora, shoulder bag, whip) are still being used regularly more than 10 years later?

That said, you’re right, it’s time for an update. Technically, they already have a piece they could repurpose (namely Rex’s hair/hat combo piece from the TLM2 CMF series), but I’d expect a completely new one. As for the whip, they should use both of the existing ones, based on the scenes depicted (or just include both in every set). The bag can also stay the same :classic:

What should be updated are the face prints and some of the pieces used for the other characters. Henry Jones Sr for instance should receive a proper hat this time, rather than just a recoloured pith helmet

YES! Exciting news indeed :excited: If the info about there being 6 sets is correct, that means they must've planned quite a big wave originally, considering that Indy 5 was initially supposed to come out this year. What this also shows us is that they must be quite confident in the theme  Of course the delay is to blame here, but releasing sets without a film around the corner is pretty rare

These sets will sell like crazy. I am so hyped for James Cameron's Avatar 2 sets too.

The only two things I'm a bit worried about are the films they're covering and how they will handle the villains. As for the former, I know KotCS is a sore subject among fans, but I hope one of the sets is still based on it :classic: Personally, I like the film a lot. Regarding the latter, they should be able to get away with including Nazi and Soviet soldiers by removing any emblems and symbols and naming them "enemy soldiers", just like they did in 2008/9. If not, some of the sets would be pretty weird without any henchmen for Indy to fight

I really hope we get KotCS sets down the road, I like it. I love the 50s alien conspiracy era so much.

Fantastic news about the Indiana Jones line returning! Now we just need Lord of the Rings to make a comeback.

Hopefully KOTCS gets at least one set. I'm not sure the film is popular enough to warrant another set as grand as the Temple of Akator but a remake of the River Chase or Jungle Cutter would be a great way to represent the film at a moderate price point and cover most of the primary characters.

Regarding the soldiers - I'm more than happy to go without them if it means getting all the primary villains this time. Too many of them were missing from the original line.

That would be a good trade-off  But who would drive vehicles like the RotlA truck or the KotCS jungle cutter then? :head_back:

So, if there are 6 sets in total, the ideal distribution would be 2 sets based on RotlA and TlC each, and 1 set each for ToD and KotCS :classic: Sounds fair to me

Yeah, maybe we do get a set based on KotCS, we shall see.

I also wonder if Lego will do war planes like they did with the original theme, the scene based on Last Crusade. Last time they did such s plane from WWI with Wonder Woman 2017 set.
