Hello all Technic fans, let me present you my tribute to the famous Mercedes-Benz G-Class iconic car series.

As a relatively new member, I must introduce myself. My name is Igor, I'm from Russia. Adult Fan of Lego, but I usually do this hobby with my 12 year old daughter. In fact, I'm too lazy to upload my MOCs anywhere, but this time I finally decided to do it. As it turned out, creating an instruction also takes a lot of time and is not as fun process as it might seem at the beginning.

My MOC is not really an original model. This amazing MOC by Artyom Gabbasov strongly inspired me to build my own MOD. For some reason, it looks like this MOC has not yet been presented here. Basically, what I built was a deep modification of it. I disfigured the hood with system and added a couple more motors. 

Here is a short video review so that you could form an opinion on the look and functions. Sorry for the video quality, I'm just an amateur with an old smartphone.

A few words about the details...

Body. Still, time goes on and it seemed to me that the old body was no longer cool, so the choice fell on the new body of 2018-2021. In addition, I decided that it would be a BRABUS tuning.   In my opinion, the 2018 body looks really modern and I really like it. The body of the G-Class is square, so it won't be possible to work it out on this scale. Therefore, I focused on such details as the bumpers, the radiator grille, as well as the rear of the car. I especially wanted to make the new optics of the car recognizable, so it took me so many LEDs. The hood was conceived in the BRABUS style, but how successful it is for you to judge. Perhaps some of the parts in the MOC will be rare, but I wanted to make the body as black as possible, without blue dots from pins, etc.

 

Interior. Here I tried to work it out as much as possible on this scale. Moreover, I wanted to keep the rear row of seats, so I managed to fit two BuWizzes in the trunk.

 

Wheels. I used RC wheels in this model because they looked better and were more suitable for drifting. I'm sorry this is certainly not original Lego, but the choice of 62mm Lego wheels is not as huge as we would like. 

 

Functions. The car was originally designed for racing, drift and fun. But after thinking for a while, I decided that converting the MOC into a boring regular version shouldn't be too difficult. As the extra functions, in the end, I decided to make the front L-motors removable so that you could quickly change the main transmission ratio. And I also decided that the quick-release rear axle would fit too. So that during the game you can change it to a regular axle (with a differential).

 

 

I also made two color variations of this car. I like blue even more, but some details in this color are even rarer (shock absorbers, e.g.)

Wow! Would you mind taking a picture with lego wheels and tires?

If you follow the links at the bottom of the article, Lego wheels could be found on the renders from the instruction (from the Stud.io). I have not taken real photos yet.

More about wheels. Apologies if I hurt the feelings of the Lego purists too much. I have added more photos of the original Lego wheels here. I also plan to shoot a video of off-road adventures on Lego wheels, stay tuned for updates in this topic.

Off-road. Having played a little with the regular version, I decided that it was too boring for off-road. So in the evening I have built two removable portal axles. Rides well and the new tires from buggy definitely suits this car. Getting ready for the weekend in nature.

Could you please try it on Defender wheels?

Maybe it will look cool like Squared Gelanewagen...

And exaust pipes like on the last image - out of model, real car has straight pipes mostly I assume.

This is a special off-road exhaust (to prevent water from entering).

@Igor1Let me guess the tyres are smaller than DEfender ones. Do not cheat 

And I wonder how will look Unimog tyres also.

There is a good chance to create a G 4*4 Squared here :)

I think the Defender and Unimog tires are too big for this model.

The upcoming G 4*4 is not only about big tyres^^... unlike the previous model it will have Portals only on the back axle - and very long independent liftarms on the front:

This should allow much higher Autobahn Cruising speeds... hence they are testing it - on the Nürburg Ring.

In fact, I cheated here. Since in 2018 body should also have an independent front suspension, but I left the axle.  If someone builds and improves this MOC, I would be very happy about it. Also, I d'not exclude that this someone can be myself.

This model is the perfect example to show how the choice of wheels is important in a car model.
With RC wheels it just looks wow!

I agree! Wheels are 50% of the look. That's why every time we look forward to new LEGO wheels with such trepidation.

looks amazing , ever thought about putting chrome wheels on it?

Do not quote the whole block of pictures and text.

I don't have chrome rims. Also, I don't think it's a good idea to put chrome wheels on a black Gelandewagen unless it's black chrome.

The off-road continues. Last weekend I got a little sick, so the field trip was postponed, but not the carpet tests. After that I had to modify the portal axles a little more. The 6.5L red shocks were too stiff and had little travel. Which was not bad for drifting, but not at all suitable for off-road. I ended up swapping out the shock absorbers for longer 9.5L with normal spring. After that the suspension travel became long and realistic.

Despite the reduction of the portals (12/20), the model drives quite fast. And the power reserve is enough to even lift the hood up from the start. After all the modifications, the MOC became heavier by about 100 grams (1700g versus 1600g for the drift version).

The new wheels from the buggy (42124) turned out to be completely unsuitable for driving (very poor grip). In the end I decided to put wheels with a reference to the 9398 set, but with a slightly smaller diameter (82mm).

Due to the large size of the portals, the new axles turned out to be wider, so that the wheels protrude beyond the dimensions of the car. To keep the wheels turning the front bumper had to be trimmed a little on the sides. To make it look even more off-road I added a bottom bumper guard as well as a couple of off-road attributs (such as a snorkel and an LED roof chandelier). But not much, because such cars are usually needed for show-off, not for real dirt. But we'll light it up!

I almost forgot. Compare how much the car's clearance has increased as a result!

@Igor1 Maybe try to extend the fenders enough to cover the wheels width?

@Aleh I wouldn't want to greatly disfigure the original body, since the fenders will be 5-6 studs long each. In addition the front wheels will brush against them when turning. In fact what happened to build is more like a lifted truck.
