Inertia Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Here we have the odd Blacktron Sub-Orbital Guardian, a sort of Mecha-like Blacktron set, the wings that make up the feet of this vehicle can move thanks to a system of turntables. Here's the front view showing the guns and dishes. A lot of Neon green in this set... Side view, what an awkward way to drive a vehicle, wearing a giant harness, considering the lack of control panels, I'm guessing this is what lets him drive... Front view again, with the Canopy open, another shot of the pilot in his harness. Rear view, showing the AA guns and the way the dishes are held. Again, I would like to stress that I prefer the idea of getting singular vehicles and not the whole 'Good guy, bad guy' concept TLC have at the moment... The 6878 seems like a re-hash of the Blacktron I 6876 Alienator... In conclusion, I'd give this set 3 out of 5, mainly beacuse it is a little strange and it's just a revamp of the Alienator.... Also it has an extremely awkward way of driving, that would sorta be cool... C and C welcome. Thank you for reading... Quote
Adam Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Great review, Inertia! I honestly had no idea that this set existed! Quote
CP5670 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I have this one and agree with your review. I don't think the design is as good as the Alienator, but it still has a number of useful and rare parts. As for the lack of controls, the set actually comes with a 1x2 computer tile. It's normally supposed to go into the container, but it can be used in place of the white grill as a control panel. Quote
Inertia Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 Great review, Inertia! I honestly had no idea that this set existed! Neither did I until I saw it on eBay and bought the Allied Avenger with it too... I have this one and agree with your review. Interesting, the alienator also has more guns and rockets and the like... Quote
KDog Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Was this set released worldwide? Or was it an exclusive of some sort? Quote
CP5670 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I'm pretty sure it was available in all of TLG's markets. I got one as a kid and picked up a second one off ebay a few years ago. Generally, the sets with the 1xxx numbers had limited availability in some way while all the others were available globally, although there were a few exceptions to that rule. Quote
Inertia Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 Was this set released worldwide? Or was it an exclusive of some sort? I think Worldwide, but I got it cheap for 8 pounds, no one really wants the set on ebay, I dunno why... I think it's pretty cool. I'm pretty sure it was available in all of TLG's markets. Yeah, like the SP II Robot and the Crater Critters sets, they both have a 1xxx number Quote
Plastic Nurak Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 This was my last LEGO set until spring 1999, I bought it for 1993 "Befana" (6 January), I was interested in Blacktron II theme and I played a lot with this set and I modified and MOC-ized it, before mixing parts with others I had. When I see it, nostalgia comes back inside me . I was 12, the maximum age for LEGOLAND Space (and City, Castle and Pirates) theme , but I wanted still all! Ah, the found memories ... Quote
Artanis I Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Typically the number 6xxx for space sets represented sets that were available worldwide and listed in standard catalogues. 6954 Renegade is an exception. Sub-Orbital Guardian walker kinda looks like a helicopter on top, with Alienator feet. I agree to many previous comments over the years about the similarity to Alienator in the function of the feet/legs - but I don't think over all they look much like each other so I refer to it in its own right. For me, Alienator looked too much like AT-AT ripoff anyway. Cool set though. The minifig isn't wearing a harness, it's a jet pack. Why is he wearing one inside a vehicle? I don't know. Quick getaway I suppose - I always imagined walkers to be quite slow. Lack of controls in this set is a bit annoying, you just have to pretend. Neural interface or something. Maybe a touch screen comes up on the windscreen. At least it doesn't have a steering wheel like some space ships - that makes no sense. Cute little set, good one to have a few of. (And with the old idea of one faction in a set, you could buy a bunch without getting a bunch of the same alien enemy fig on a flying carpet! SP3 I'm talking to YOU) haha Quote
