Speaking of images, on Imgur I looked up your account and only found 2 images, and I’ve seen your Secutor and Dreadnought on Imgur but couldn’t follow you for some reason. Is there any where else you post your renders? Allegiance looks sick btw

This thread is the only place I regularly post stuff. I've historically used Imgur solely for image hosting and have never engaged with any of the social media aspects of the site, so I'd never thought about anyone trying to follow me there. Most of the images from this thread are hosted there but are only accessible via the direct link. I've justs set a bunch of them to be publicly visible, but I seem to have hit a posting limit, so I'll go back through later and get the rest of them. Pretty nearly everything there is already going to be somewhere in this thread, but that'll at least let people see all the pictures in one place.

Mild spoilers for Ahsoka episode 6 are below.

Spoiler

So, let's talk about Chimaera. The battle-damaged version is now obviously on my list of stuff to do (although it'll be after the Venator and probably some other stuff). I definitely will need to make instructions for the whole set, since the damage is going to be too extensive to easily retrofit into an assembled copy of 75252, so that's at least made that decision for me. But my immediate question is, could you make a stand for it that was just shaped like that tower? It would be doubly good because a higher stand would show off Chimaera's underside a lot more. I think it's potentially workable--it's not a good idea, mind you, from any kind of structural perspective, but the part of the frame right above the hangar bay is a reasonably sturdy attachment point, and with a bit of bracing (OK, a lot of bracing) I bet you could convince it to not immediately tip over backwards. It's still going to be extremely back-heavy, and it'll definitely put a lot of stress on the stand, and the part of the stand on the ground will have to be enormous to keep the center of gravity over it, and of course I can only speculate about it since I'm 14000 km away from my copy of 75252, but it would look nice...

Wow, I had the exact same thoughts watching that episode! I'm sure it can be done with a significant amount of bending, but I can't say I recommend it with any scale over Midi. You could of course cheat and keep some minimal stands where the rear stands are now, maybe with some clear technic beams?

you could pack bricks in the front section to counter the lack of balance when it is on the tower stand

alternatively, you could put technic beans inside the hanger going lengthways along the ship and have the tower clip into those to be more secure

I don't think there's enough space in the front of the ship to add enough weight to make a difference. With metal weight, maybe, but not just bricks. There's enough room inside the ISD to run a diagonal beam up into the terrace region to help brace it, but it's not going to be ideal however you slice it. It'd be super convenient if they'd bring that hyperspace ring down and dock it with the back half of the ISD while it's still over the tower. That would make a perfect rear stand. Just have to see. This is mostly just idle speculation, anyway; I don't think it's in any way necessary to make a nice model of Chimaera.

Will you make any Chiss ships?

There isn't enough information. No Chiss ship larger than a Clawcraft has ever been given an explicit size, and there's only ever been one official image of any of their capital ships (a single frame of Steadfast in one of the recent Thrawn comics), which doesn't give enough information to extrapolate the scale. I talked with Timothy Zahn about it a while ago, and he says that when he's writing the books he categorizes ships by relative power tier but not by size, so the information simply doesn't exist, even in his head. If that ever changes I'll be all over them, though.

Isn't the Steadfast image just a flipped Macross Valk, anyway? I guess that wouldn't really affect how you build it, but still, a funny weird detail lol

Hot diggity dog, they totally did it. I actually think this would be entirely practical from an engineering perspective. Having the attachment all the way at the rear is perfect; there won't be any need for complex engineering around the hangar bay. If anything it's probably more stable than the stand the model currently has. This would be a completely ridiculous thing, of course--it'd have to be the whole section of landscape, so like a 100x70cm base or something utterly impractical, but it'd be one hell of a display piece. It's a bit outside my wheelhouse, mind you, but definitely on my list to do.

I'm still alternating structural stuff for Executor with thinking about greebling and smaller details. These are a couple more concepts for what some of its weapons might look like. I showed off the three in the back a while ago; the back left is LEGO's version of an ISD1 turret from 75252; the back center is my design for an ISD2 octuple-barrel turret; and the back right is a vague idea for a heavier turret of approximately that size. No obvious turrets are visible on the Executor studio model, so there's no direct reference other than extrapolating from what other Imperial Navy turrets tend to look like. In the front row, the smallest gun is intended to match the shapes of some of the greeblies on the edges of the hull panels on the studio model; there might be a couple hundred of those along the length of the ship. That also happens to be pretty close to the size of the main turrets on a Victory, so I may use that or a very similar design when I eventually get that ship finished. The two next to it are slightly larger than an ISD's turrets, and could possibly correspond to some of the squarish lumps scattered across Executor's surface, but more probably would be situated around the cortical regions. Finally, the big turret would be part of the super-heavy anti-capital battery that Executor supposedly has but never seems to actually use. Those barrels are each about the size of the big spinal cannons on a Munificent-class frigate. A gun of this size definitely ought to be visible on the studio model, so it's hard to say exactly where these things should go on the ship, but my tendency would be to nestle them down in the cortical regions where they'll blend in with all the random antennae and spars and stuff. From a tactical perspective it doesn't make any sense to put your guns down there, obviously, but the model is what it is; there's nowhere to hide the kind of weapons Executor is supposed to have on the surface of the ship.

Hi Kdapt-Preacher first of all, I want to tell you that I love your designs, and I have already replicated some of them.

I would like to change the turrets of my Monarch ISD to your ISD2 octuple-barrel turret design.  I think it would look much better with them than with the ones that the Onecase MOC comes with.

Do you have the PDF manual, the list of parts for one of them or the Studio file? I would like to try to see if they fit in the holes of the original ISD turrets.

Thanks!!

I haven't made PDF instructions for them, but they're small enough that you shouldn't have any trouble. The Stud.io file is available here. Oddly, the largest of those turrets isn't in that file, and I'm not sure what's become of it--either I didn't save it or (more likely) I have a different version of this file saved somewhere else. If you need that I'll look for it, but it sounds like you only need the ISD parts, so hopefully this'll be fine. It looks like those turrets will be about the right size for Monarch, but I have no idea how Onecase's turrets are attached, so I'll be interested to hear how that goes. Report back!

Thank you very much, the stud.io file is enough since I only needed the design of the 8-gun turret. My doubts were how you had joined the two rows of 4 cannons, and the total number of pieces each turret needs, both doubts already clarified.

Originally the ISD Monarch mounts fixed turrets, although in my case I modified them so that they could rotate, in a design that I found on reddit, I upload a couple of photos of the modification, in case you are curious.

As soon as I have the necessary parts, I will upload some photos of the result ;)

Thank you very much again!

Ah, that looks like it'll work out well. The 4x4 round plate isn't really structural to my turrent; it's basically just sitting on a jumper plate already, so it ought to mount on the exact same base you've got there, with the 1x2 plate in the middle supporting the 1x2 slope with cutout. I look forwards to seeing the pictures!

Have you thought about the Republic Medical Station, where you could dock a couple Peltas in it?

I have thought about it, and even started a prototype model like two years ago, although I ended up scrapping it and haven't gone back yet. At the time I wasn't satisfied that I could get the angles on the outer ring sections to make the overall shape appropriately circular, but I've learned a lot since then and I'm much more confident with it now. I have a vision of using a trans-clear 6x6 radar dish with the Jurassic World gyrosphere print to achieve the ring of blue lights at the top of each of the joint column cylinder things, but I'm not certain it would end up looking good in person. I dunno. I'll get back to it at some point.

what part is that on top, i might try that for looks (ive got the gyrosphere part)

It's this 5x5 dish. I don't completely love it, since it's a lot more pointed than that part of the station actually is; I'd rather have a 5x5 radar dish. But there isn't a 5x5 radar dish, and I don't think the 4x4 radar dish looks right (it shows off way too much of the transparent dish underneath it). That's part of why I'm not totally convinced this is actually a workable idea. But by all means, play around with it; you may well get it working better than I have here.

Next up, the MC30c frigate! At long last, a Mon Calamari ship. These things have been kind of intimidating me for a long time, so it feels good to have one finished, even if it's just a small one. This also fills a much-needed gap for a mid-sized Rebel ship to counterbalance all the Imperial stuff. Like with the Strike cruiser, I'm pretty satisfied that this is finished but I can't currently build it IRL, so I'm going to hold off on publishing instructions for the moment.

I have made this model irl using the stud.io file, and it is very solid with the exception of the rotated fins at the middle of the ship. the two by two inverted piece does not connect well to the two by two wedge, and tends to jiggle a lot. It is the same for the ventral fins, although to a lesser degree. The two by two inverted still has trouble connecting to the two by two wedge.

Ah, excellent information--that's exactly the kind of thing it's hard to figure out from the Stud.io file. Thank you for testing it!

In the short term I can think of two relatively non-invasive fixes. Option A is to replace the 1x2 tile there with a 1x2 plate and add a 1x2 ingot to connect that to the 2x2 wedge, which gives it a second point of contact to the 2x2 inverted tile. Option B is to replace the 1x2 tile and the 2x2 wedge with a single 2x2 plate, and then use a pair of curved slopes on top of that to get the wedge shape back.

Spoiler

Option A:

XuXEgvR.png

Option B:

Bf4L27G.png

Both of those would apply to the rear fin just as easily if need be. I think they'd both be sturdier than what we started with, but neither one looks quite as good IMO; they've lost a bit of the smoothness there. I'll put some thought into reinforcing that area from the underside. There isn't a lot of room there, but it might be possible to take a chunk out of the ship's spine without losing too much structural integrity.

not the most elegant of solutions, but what about a 1x1 bracket attached to the thrusters?

Hmm. I interpreted The-yukio's post differently, I think. The way I read it, the connection to between the wedge plate and the main body of the ship is fine (via the 1x1 bracket that's already next to the one you've got in purple there), but the issue is the 2x2 boat stud immediately behind it. Those boat studs are always problematic; the studs on them aren't quite full-sized (they're clipped to accomodate the circular shape), so they don't have the same hold as a regular stud with some pieces.

Do the 2x2 turntable bases have the same thing? I tend to use those instead of the boat tiles, as they're slightly lower profile and more visually interesting. Can't remember if the clutch power is that different between them though.

That's a good thought. They have full-size studs. I've never used those for anything, but they'd probably do the job. Do they ever come from LEGO disarticulated from the base? I'd be curious whether disassembling them is technically illegal.

I don't think the top half has been in LEGO sets disassembled, or if they have I don't recall it (I have a feeling the bottom half has). I'm almost certain you can get it disassembled in Studio though.

As for legality, I guess it depends on your definition... I always took that to be connection methods that put undue stress on a part when connected. After all, minifigure hands don't come disassembled from torsos, and they're definitely fair game for me!

They come disassembled, part 3679 is the upper part. I'm 99% sure i've seen them used separate like this in an official Lego set, so I wouldn't say its illegal. I replaced the boat stud with the turn plate on the MC30c and it fits wonderfully, no shaking whatsoever. Would you consider replacing the boat studs with the turn parts in previous builds? For example, I think they would do better at stabilizing the Immobilizer plates at the bow.

The bottom half is definitely used on its own (in 10256 Taj Mahal, for example, and probably other places), but I can't think of any examples of the top half either. I dunno. Very much a grey area. I don't use minifigure hands, personally--I know the majority of the community is cool with that, but it always seemed like a bit of a bridge too far for me. Using the turntables isn't as far, but I'm still not completely comfortable with it. I may get over it. We'll see. In the meantime, I fully support anybody else using the turntables if they prefer.

I've been looking and haven't come up with an example of them being used separately in an official set. If you can think of one, that would make up my mind immediately. In the meantime I'll think about exactly where I draw the line here. If I decide that it's legit, then I'd definitely consider replacing the boat studs on the Immobilizer; you're almost certainly right that they'd work better for some of those angle plates. It's moot for the moment since I'm not going to be able to make any structural changes to anything until I'm back in the US and have access to my physical bricks again anyway, but if you have the Immobilizer assembled and want to make that change I would completely encourage you to do so.
