Hi all

Coming out of my dark ages, I was super keen to put together a lego city (being a big fan of Jang and his amazing city).  Here's my first attempt, combining a number of themes spanning 40 years - Classic Town, City, Lego Ideas, Modulars and a few builds from the classic 6000 ideas book.  Still very much a work in progress, but pretty happy with it!

Second round will be to try to include trains, but that will be a challenge!

Now that classic town area looks amazing! My parents talked about how they grew up with those sets back when they had every single type of building imaginable as the sets actually focused on town life where it should've been instead of all this explorers stuff. Even when they knew the set wouldn't sell, they made it. You should go on Instagram and follow max_timebuster. His town is full of classic town sets - though recently, he's been doing Adventures sets with Johnny Thunder and Sam Sinister.

The combination works really well - this looks excellent!  I particularly like the petrol stations out the front.

perhaps try using 1 kind of baseplates

Many of the classic sets used here have specific baseplates required for them - special ones that only appeared in that set or a few from the era.  There used to be far more specialised baseplates in sets than there are now.  However, these are quite hard to find, and don't work great with the new sets - with larger cars, the roads need to be wider, and the greys have actually changed.  As the classic sets require classic baseplates, the realistic option is to keep both, just as @Moz77 has done.  There are big YouTubers who use both - Alex Nunes, who has 88k subs and a 350 square foot city, uses both kinds extensively.  @Moz77 - I think the use of both kinds looks brilliant.

No bad.. you have several good vintage sets + good MOC from book 200 and 6000...
But the road plates are little bit odd.. it maybe better to have only using 1 pattern of road plates...

My town/city is much bigger than your one but I use 1 set of road plates.. and it looks definitely better.

Thanks everyone for the useful feedback and kind comments.

Re: the road plates - yes, the intention is to have them consistent (or as much as I can given that some sets sit on unique plates).  I ran out of the types I needed (hence the use of a space landing pad!).  They are only temporary until I acquire a few more.

Hi Moz.. this is what I mean for using same type of road plates... that looks much clear....

Thanks again bright22 for your suggestion re: the road plates.  I took this on board, acquired some additional roads, and made them all consistent.  I agree that the results look much better - see below.  Quite happy with how this looks.

The next step is to re-arrange the whole thing and start incorporating 12v trains, stations and the airport shuttle...

This is a great thread, as it really shows the different aesthetic of Classic Town and more recent Expert sets. As far as layout is concerned, I think there's merit to keeping each distinct style somewhat separate, if only to appreciate how sets from each period integrate with each other - as they were designed to. My only suggestion would be to invest in some bulk orders of greenery (trees, etc.), and either carefully group them on the emptier road plates (atop of green or brown plate designs to denote soil), or create a large park area. It helps to soften the presentation of the town, and diminishes the open slabs of grey road plate that draws attention to open space (I understand there may be open spaces where more sets will be place, but still...)

I see a few 'Lego Ideas 6000' buildings on Moz77's layout! Always loved the cinema and supermarket! Were these built by reference to the 6000 book, or has someone made instructions somewhere for them?

integrating the monorail wont be too bad as you can make it run above street level and even straight through a modular as this builder shows:

Monorail passthrough 1

btw. nice looking city! i like the light gray roadplates with the modulars more than them with the dark gray ones

Build a circular island in the center of the pad and it becomes a roundabout.

Wow! That’s really good! I like how it’s a cool blend of new and old! I saw some old sets that I didn’t know existed (is that a movie theatre in image 7872?)! Really awesome! Good job!
