Valesia holds her side, blood beginning to pool. "Pharx, that stung!" The Cladrasith rolls over to B2 and rallies her fellow hero. "Hold tight Max, we'll make it out of this alive. Now bring that thing down!"

"Will do" Max said while letting out third burst from his carbine. "How are you hanging on? Is it bad?"

Maximilian heard Soren's shout far too late to even think about moving, instead intent on holding fast alongside Valesia. He could do little but hope that the pilot would be succesful in drawing the drone's attention.

I'd try to move away, but since Rally requires the target to be adjacent, can't really do that.

Soren steps over to E5 and fires a third time.

Come this way, you big metal bastard!

WBD, do you mean B1? I'm not sure you can get to B2 with the drone there.

“There’s no way Max is getting out of there, better to help reinforce his position.”

OoC: Fixed, Valesia could move to E1 but that would leave Max stranded. Valesia could spend a turn meditating, but given the enemy’s low health, there’s a good chance a rallied Max and Soren could finish it off this turn.

Round Three of the Duel In The Deluga Dunes

Agents' Turn:

Max VS HC-288: (5, 4 + 1 weapon mod) 3 successes - 1 space for being out of critical range vs (5) 1 success = 3 - 1 - 1 = 1 damage to the HC-288.

Soren VS HC-288: (6, 6 + 2 weapon mod) 4 successes vs (4) 1 successes = 4 - 1 = 3 damage to the HC-288... KO!

...

The HC-288 was closing in on Max and Valesia rapidly, brandishing its drill arms as its depth charges tore up the dunes around them. Despite being outside of the optimal range, Max's shot still manages to kneecap one of the HC-288's appendages. Just as the drone is about to pounce, Soren rushes in and aims true. The robot suddenly goes still, as if trying to realize what just happened. It belches out smoke, shaking, until... BANG!

DFLuuwr.png

"ERROR! ERROR! ERROR!"

One of the depth charges in the drone explodes, blasting off some of its metal plating. The another, then another, then another, its own explosives going off like firecrackers in its chassis. It stumbles around in a panic, each explosion sending it reeling until it finally collapses backwards, inert and defeated.

All heroes gain one character point! From the husk of the drone, the party salvages...

The party may distribute the loot and then head back to the Verunia, or perhaps head to the other Points of Interest, when ready.

Valesia sits in the dust catching her breath. "I'll be fine Dearie, just give me a moment to meditate and then I'll see about healing myself up." The Cladrasith stares over at the drone. "My, that certainly was a might bit bigger than I was anticipating. Can't imagine how bad the bigger one by the lake must be."

"Fine by me aswell". Max gazed at the hydrocobalt shards. "Sure i can take those for now. And yea we should." He reminded himself that this had only been a distraction, and that their actual job might prove even more hazardous. "Then we can get back on track with our actual mission".

He couldn't help but feel a hopeful though. The team had certainly showed that everyone was willing to stand by their comrades, even before rather serious peril.

Valesia meditates, only the sound of desert winds and smoldering drone carcass around her.

(4, 4, 6) - 3 spirit regained!

And with that, she tries to patch up the wound that the HC-288 gave her...

(1, 1, 6) - 1 vitality regained!

And does so sufficiently. The party doles out the loot and heads back to Vurenia.

The trip back to Vurenia is an uneventful one. The guards nod in the agents and the three of them overhear a slight bit of conversation as they return to Aileen's office.

Pnd9cik.png

rDx8QVz.png

"...Squad C returned from the shoreline. Terra is all banged up and is being looked at in the infirmary. Clyde lost his prosthetic in a blast... Again."

y1rp7SB.png

"Dammit...And the pipeline?"

rDx8QVz.png

"Sustained some cosmetic damage, but we're dispatching a Tinkerer just to be sure tha-"

Tanabe hears the foot steps behind him and turns around. Aileen turns too, her face imperceptible.

rDx8QVz.png

"Well, hey, look who didn't get blown to pieces."

y1rp7SB.png

"I'm glad someone made it back safe today. Before we start giving out pats on the back, agents, you have something for me?"

Valesia hefts the battery casing onto the desk, glancing at the documents as she does so. "Right here, Hun. Took a bit of a fight, but we managed alright. I hear you say you've got some poor soul in the infirmary? Would you like me to take a look at 'em?"

The documents piled up on the table seemed to be some sort of log of serial numbers. Aileen takes the battery casing into her hand and scratches off some dirt with her finger, reading the serial number. She picks up the bundle of papers and flips through them, verifying that everything was as she suspected, before logging the serial number on the casing in her notes. Afterwards, she tosses the casing to Tanabe.

rDx8QVz.png

"I'll have the boys scrap this and then be back."

y1rp7SB.png

"Sounds good." Aileen nods, turning back to the party as Tanabe exits. "Well, seems like three actually did it. Congrats on bagging an HC-288, they can be a bit feisty. I'll give the guards at the wall the signal and you can drive in. You're officially free to set up that antenna of yours where you need to, to conduct your... weather study, was it?"

"As for Terra, that's awfully kind of you, but even I have my limits on what I like to ask of outsiders. Although we are running a bit low on..." Aileen pauses. "Forget it. You're under no obligation to do so."

Soren tips his head in acknowledgment. Thanks for the permission, he says, somewhat begrudgingly.

Now, I think we're on a tight timetable. We ought to be going.

"Your assistance is... Much appreciated. Tanabe, show these two back to their skiffs. Valesia, I'll take you to the medbay."

Tanabe walks Soren and Max back to the front of the settlement, where the skiffs were still parked, no worse for wear.

rDx8QVz.png

"See? Not a dent. We took good care of you guys."

A green light on the skiff's dashboard was blinking, indicating that the skiff was near where the antenna had to be set up. Now that they had Aileen's blessing, they could drive into town and set up the equipment at their leisure.

The sniper in the tower kept their red dot trained on the skiffs all the same as Soren and Max inspect the vehicles.

"Hey! Outsiders! One of your machines wouldn't shut up! I had half a mind to take a shot at it..."

Indeed, one of the antennas was reacting...

YFQbt81.png

"...Invi... eve... ago..."

rDx8QVz.png

"That's some weird weather equipment, fellas. What's it even... What's it even saying?" Tanabe says, looking at the device, puzzled.

---

Meanwhile, Valesia is led by AIleen across another rampart, into a frankly undersized and understocked medbay. The patient in question laid wincing in a scratchy, undersized makeshift bed.

x4a5k2a.png

Painkillers, disinfectants, and bandages. That's all this place had to its name in terms of medical supplies. Meanwhile, poor Terra had to keep her leg elevated, her left leg badly seemingly badly injured the way it was being kept elevated. The real offender was her hand, caked in blood, dangling limply from her wrist. Her fingers hung loosely from the same hand... It resembled a marionette with one of its strings cut.

Terra turns to the sound of footsteps.

siqv5Iq.png

"Aileen... That you?" Whatever they had her on to mitigate the pain left her foggy. "The HC-288, we got it, but..."

y1rp7SB.png

"Yes. I know. Rough outing," Aileen says dourly, before turning to Valesia. "What can you do for her, doc?"

Beats me. I just plant the tech and let the meteorologists do the work, I don't know how any of it functions.

Valesia covered her mouth in surprise at the damage the human had sustained. "Oh my, hold still, Hun, it'll be alright." Valesia examined the wound, trying to ascertain with her medical knowledge whether magical healing could undo the damage already done, prepared to cast sustained healing if it could.

"Beat me too." Tanabe laughs. He keeps listening in, and even under the mask his body language suggests befuddlement. He snaps his fingers when he finally places it. "So you're just hired help, yeah...? You don't look like labcoat types. I'm sure your thingy is acting normal, but, well, I was just trying to place where I've heard a noise like that before. You're not one of those Conqueror's Kin weirdos, right...?"

siqv5Iq.png

"Huh? What do they have me on, who are you, where is there a tree in the medbay?"

Medical Knowledge Check: (5, 4, 1, 6) vs DC 1 -  3 successes, passed!

Valesia determines that it would take some heavy concentration, but the wounds that Terra had suffered didn't look too much unlike her own. The shape and size of the gash... Terra had been caught by the drill of a HC-288, just like Valesia did. That meant she could transfer what she already knew about healing such wounds. She gives Sustaining Healing a try...

Sustaining Healing - (6, 6, 1) -  Terra is substantially healed.

Valesia's magic pools into the gaps in Terra's hand. She watches wide eyed, wincing in pain a little bit at first, as her skin starts to mend. And then, the holes close, and the woman is able to curl her fingers up into a fist. She clenches her hand, unclenches, clenches again, looking up at the Cladrasith.

siqv5Iq.png

"They, they told me I wouldn't ever be able to use this hand again..."

y1rp7SB.png

"Now there's something impressive," Aileen murmurs. "Where did you learn that one?"

Even the advanced prosthetics these days can't measure up to the real thing. Go easy on it for the next few days though, you've been in shock and while your body might be healed, you've got to let your mind readjust."

"A Cladrasith's connection to the Æther tends to be closer then most. It's like a scent that plays on the air to us, or an unheard melody that runs between all life. Over time one finds ways to redirect the harmonies or adjust the bouquet to achieve the result you're hoping for. In her case, I'd liken it to modulating the sounds of sorrow and pain from the wound and transforming it into a fugue of health and hope, the flesh responds in kind." Valesia looks around the clinic before offering her plasma potion to Aileen. "Your stock is getting low, this should help the next time someone's in dire straits. Make sure your friend takes some time to recover."

Max turned to Tanabe with a curious look on his face: "You know what that strange static is?". Most cults die out with the leader, kind of impressive they 'pparently just got stronger.
