8852 Robot renewed

This is my entry for the Technic Transforming Vehicle Contest (TC21). It is a re-interpretation of the 8852 Robot released in 1987 (the only model in the technic theme that year) with the following changes:

  • redesigned using contemporary studless LEGO pieces;
  • the transformation is motorized and remote controlled;
  • driving and steering is motorized and remote controlled (fun fact, the instructions of the 8852 B-model also contain the possibility to apply the 4,5 volt system for driving).

The challenge of this MOC was to fit the RC-functions in this compact model while staying as close as possible to the original, kind of combining the TC21 with the TC20 rules.
The features:

  • Remote controlled driving, steering and transformation.
  • Manual movement of the arms and hands with clamping fingers.
  • Renewed stickers for the tape reel eyes.
  • Fake HOG-steering to replicate the HOG-steering of the original

Entry Name : zCube
Description : a simple transformable vehicle with dual track that can transform from a cube shape into a parallelogram shape and vice versa.
Transformation can be done while moving.

This model use 2 PU L motor to drive each side of the track & a PU XL motor to perform the transformation.
The Technic Hub got 6 LiPo rechargable AAA battery as the power source.

Remote control created with the PoweredUp apps.

Name: Plymouth SuperBIRD

800x604.jpg

Description: This model was meant to transform a car into the most believable airplane I could. In the end, the car turned into the famous Plymouth Superbird because of its convenient shape. The functions included:

-Rear-wheel-drive with a PF M-motor and micro V8 piston engine

-Steering with a PF M-motor and working rudders

-Front independent sliding-pillar suspension

-Rear independent dual longitudinal link suspension

-Manual flaperons

-Transformation powered by a PF L-motor, including:

     -Width contraction with linear actuators

     -Nose "pinching"

     -Center roof lowering

     -Jet engine deployment

     -Wing deployment

Ivo Robić

Old little soviet tractor, kindly named Ivo Robić, had a hard life... Pulling heavy equipment his whole life, our dear Ivo needs a rollator now to sustain stability. Enjoying a sip of self-distilled Diesel here and there, he is wobbling home afterwards. Never been the quickest one, he has to move even slower in his old days, gone are the the years of high mobility.

He is driven by an angular M-motor, the transformation action is done by a PU L-motor. Source is a Buwizz3, giving him mild glowing blue eyes.

Entry Name: Container Truck

Description: A shipping container that transforms into a delivery Truck

gzdsgg1l.jpg

fhZnUtNl.jpg

Dimensions are equal to a 150% length Mack Anthem container.
There are three transformations happening in two stages:

  1. Reduce track width by 1 stud on each side
  2. Lower the container over the chassis
    1. The front face moves vertical (linear) by 3 studs
    2. The cargo area/container rear + sides swing in an arch to achieve 7 studs of height change

To achieve the staged transformation the drivetrain is continually switching the "main" modes when the drive motor is on.
The two chassis movements are coupled with a differential, this way always the "easiest" move is driven until it reaches a stopping point.

Unfortunately i couldn't take enough time for this project, so the transformation is very janky and needs manual help.
That's also the reason there is no cabin :pir-cry_sad:
I never built anything even remotely as complex as this model and implementing the switch and differential solution with only hours to go was not my best idea.
Still, i'm very proud of the dense geartrain with only two obvious design errors.

You might want to watch the video without sound, those slipping gears are heartbraking to hear.

Oh, nearly forgot the belly shot:
