Typical movie tie-in sets, mostly underwhelming with license tax added.

I was interested in mechs and vehicles. Mech looks really bad 4+ range and Samson, well its somewhat OK but there is container without purpose for me.

Just imagine if one set will be just mech second set just helicopter. It will be perfect, well no.

At least there is stand for helicopter, kudos for that!

As much as I am excited to see the long minifigure arms and legs return, I'm even more happy to see that the Norm Spellman minifigure uses a printing-free variant of the long legs!

According to @Brick Clicker, this is what we can expect in January:

  • 75575 ($25)
  • 75576 ($35)
  • 75578 ($80)
  • 75579 ($100)

Glad there are some smaller sets too!

Agreed, although im kinda bummed there isn't a mid range price point. I was really hoping they do the scorpion-Samson hybrid chopper we see in the teaser, but I don't really think it fits in any of the price ranges. I guess 80 could work with a smaller side build, but then that may be muscling in on the current RDA site 26 set. As for what else we can expect, I'm not sure. We know little about the movies contents due to no official trailer, but from what we have seen, maybe a final battle type sort of set at the 100 dollar price point, with 2 water banshees (no clue what they are) and some RDA boats? Either that or the floating crescent looking things in that cove? Im hoping the 25 dollar set is that crab mech that we saw in concept art, I would love to get it and its been out on the internet for a while now. But it is concept art, so who knows if it will even show up in the final film? As for the 35 dollar set, I'm clueless. Really hoping they don't down size the Samson. As much as I hate to say it, I despise the current version. Its absolutely minuscule compared to what it should be.

Side note, is anyone gonna go see the re-release of the OG avatar in cinemas on the 23rd? Cant wait to be able to experience it on the big screen, I know my crappy old laptop doesn't do the film justice.

Honestly, because I love underwater sets, I could genuinely see myself getting most of the sets from this wave if they turn out to be in keeping with the whole water theme, despite not being interested in Avatar at all. I could always use more sea monsters and subs.

Ooh interesting prices, as far as creatures go I think we’ll definitely get an ilu and a skimwing (especially in a battle set). I doubt it due to size, but perhaps we might get a tulkun. A large set could be the base for the metakayina clan.

With LAN reviews out now, it's interesting to see that the long arms and legs are in fact new moulds. The legs are essentially the same as those from the original Toy Story line, just with different moulding on the inside, but the arms are slightly different in shape and a little shorter.

I'm still super sceptical of how well these sets will sell, but I'm casually interested in the Site 26 & RDA Samson set primarily for the minifigure parts, Letty to go with Dom, the new wheelchair, weird horse thing (though wish it had ANY articulation) and a well-finished repurposeable build in the command centre itself. It does look a tad expensive, but overall is a good package.

Seems like lots of opinions have been thrown around and while I do not intend on buying this theme I do want to put some input given I was interested in it at the rumor stage.

first I want to address the proportions. I think the flat faces with noses printed on played into why these figures look so awkward. I think the cat nose should have been a physical indentation in the mold for the head as opposed to printed on. I don’t think that was flattering.

As for the long limbs, yes its to be expected and accurate but something about these figures just seems awkward to me.

Some thoughs on the sets themselves:

75571 - the Thanator was built hideously. I love the head mold but the legs and feet look so bad. I would have rather specially molded legs with a different element for the webbed claws. The build looks like the claws can be popped off quite easily and the blocky shape of the legs and claws does not mesh well with the realistic smooth detailing of the head. The mech is close enough but wish it had thumbs.

75573 - best figs of the wave but I suspect this would not be $100 any other year. Its just not worth the price given other sets from more desirable themes at the moment.

75572 - fairly accurate and pleasing colors and builds used. This set made me realize Lego can decently adapt content from movies I liked and I wouldn’t necessarily want it. Just because the movie and set are fine does not mean I want to buy it.

all in all the builds, pricing, and competition for shelf space and money make this theme unappealing to me. The 2 larger sets are not terrible like the smallest, but still not my cup of tea. I saw the Lego group had these on preorder recently and I suspect they’re underproducing and letting the orders rack up to determine how many more batches of the set they’ll make. I suspect their trying not to overproduce this and scope it out for now. I can see this theme only lasting a year or so.

After rewatching Avatar through the 3D rerelease in theaters, I do think the selection for the current wave of sets is pretty solid.  There's a few noticeable omissions among the minifigure lineup (Grace's avatar, human Norm, Eytukan, and maybe more RDA soldiers would have been appreciated) and I would have liked to see how LEGO would have done a couple of the other creatures, such as the Hammerhead Titanothere and the Viperwolf.  Most of the other vehicles would have needed to be scaled down significantly to be made into sets, so I can see why LEGO skipped those.  Overall, I do think the most important stuff from the movie was covered.  Once the sequel is released, I'll be curious to see how the set selection of the next wave stacks up.

I went and saw the rerelease in theaters, too, and I agree. The selection for the first wave is exceptional. That being said, I feel like this is a common pattern where if a wave is based on movie(s) that have been released for a while the wave is solid in that sky’s the limit for Lego to design pretty much whatever they want (Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Infinity Saga). I don’t believe Avatar 2’s wave will be as solid as Lego has really only concept art to work with and has to worry about potential spoilers in the movie.

I just saw the sets on store shelves for the first time here in the U.K., at a SmythToys in london

Interesting, wonder if they will show up at my local toy store. I doubt I’ll grab the bigger sets at full price but I wouldn’t be opposed to getting the AMP suit set.

They are in John Lewis now too :)

I have also seen other Avatar non-Lego merchandise in smythToys for the first time too, interestingly they are also doing as Lego has done: making packs of figures, creatures and scenery based on the first movie

Wave 2 images of avatar 2 mcfarlane toys have been released, these have revealed a new rda crab suit and seawasp. Creature wise an ilu, skimwing and akula, which all could be in the wave 2 for lego (I’m hoping for a tulkun but probably too big).

What I think we will get for the first 2023 Lego Avatar wave :

a set with Jake Sully (or another character) riding a skimwing from the battle scene of the first Avatar 2 trailer (with an opponant maybe ?),

- a set with a Metkayina house that we can see in early pictures (with the childs of Jake & Neytiri maybe ?),

- a set with a RDA vehicule, I think the "Crabsuit" submarine vehicule will be perfect (with a coral reef part for display solution),

- a set with Neteyam riding an Ilu (with a coral reef part for display solution).

What I would like to see done by Lego for the Avatar theme

- +18 / adult / UCS sets ? Valkyrie shuttle, Dragon assault shuttle, ...

- more RDA mercenaries, we only get Colonel Miles Quaritch for Avatar 1 sets, one RDA guy for 13 minfigures for the first wave...

- more Pandoran creatures / animals (in one mould, like the Lego Jurassic World dinosaurs),

- minifigures blind bag series (I know I am dreaming...)

Would absolutely love to see more RDA stuff, despite being the "bad guys", really the whole reason they're out there millions of miles from home and risking their lives on a hostile alien world is to save a dying planet and their species. Sure, their methods aren't exactly ethical but considering they're pretty desperate, their multiple humanitarian and ecological crimes can be overlooked. Also they have the coolest freaking tech in any sci-fi movie, bar maybe the Alien series. The sea wasp, the heavy Samson from the trailer, the submarine and the crab suit all look amazing so far. I know lego wants to focus on the hero's of the movie but id love to see more of the human side. Hopefully the sell out of the RDA Samson and site 26 set will show its worth to lego.

a page from the new art book for way of the water also shows of a "sea dragon" vehicle, looks to be 1 man submarine not unlike the skirmisher from the black panther 2 throne room set, it looks very intresting. Cameron is really coming through with my favourite part of the franchise, the tech!

If we're wishlisting RDA sets, I'd like a $150 Valkyrie shuttle and a $70 microscale ISV Venture Star.

I was about to say these would never happen, but considering how much lego is throwing at crappy expensive licensed D2C sets I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we got something like this. Only we would be the people the sets are supposed to appeal to. Still struggling to find the audience for those 2 new marvel sets. They're cool, but who are they actually for?

Dream set would be an A-Wing scale Samson, from the first film. Would look amazing on a shelf or mounted on a wall. maybe at about £200 id actually consider getting this.

I think how in-depth this theme gets largely depends on both how well the sets sell (I'm not quite sure how well the current wave is selling), and how much TWOW makes at the box office (for what it's worth, I think the recent rerelease of the first movie made over $70 million at the box office).  If Avatar can prove it can sustain being a big franchise beyond one movie, I wouldn't completely rule out stuff like UCS sets or a CMF series.

I wasn't able to get to see the re-release, I'm not sure if I can still go see it but I'd love to if the chance is there. Anyone seen the new page leaks from art books on German amazon? some amazing stuff shown off.

Spoiler

Theres a human city thats been built called bridgehead, looks amazing, I'd love to get something like this in set form, maybe a small part of it with a sea wasp or new Samson. I've got to get to building my own crab suit now, but that cockpit is gonna be a pain to deal with.

Lego just posted a teaser for the new avatar sets, it’s a Lego-ification of the way of water poster, with one of jakes children (I believe her name is kiri?) in minifig form. I cannot wait for this movie or the sets. Really hoping we get some Mako subs or sea wasps, or the crab suits.

Looking good! Nice that we seem to get some additional hairpieces :classic: The two we currently have are great, but we do need more variety.

Interesting that they’re already teasing the new sets, as they’re supposed to be released in January
