icm Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 JB Spielwaren has a review of the whale set from Avatar 2. The front segment of the whale’s body is built with a cavity large enough to hold a minifig, and it’s open at the front. Surely that must be intentional. @Modeltrainman, if you’ve ever wanted to build Jonah and the whale you could hardly ask for a better place to start. As an aside, it occurred to me today that two copies of Bowser’s Airship would be a pretty great start to Noah’s Ark …. Quote
Alegrispa Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 So, reviews for the movie seem to be pretty great. I wonder if this gamble will pay off for LEGO after all. Quote

All the ones I have read / listened to say "it's a big technical achievement that looks great", and everything else like the actual story (which no one including marketing material is talking about) and characters are middling, just like the first. I've read mixed takes on how interesting the design of things is too, from some saying it looks breathtaking and others saying the underwater world is exciting looking as a screensaver. Now, I also thought the first film was boring as all get out on every level and it went on to be the biggest film of all time, so this one might blow through the roof too. That said, I don't see heaps of kids sitting through a 3 hour 10 minute film to the point that it'll really support massive toy sales even if it does do fantastically well for itself theatrically. Did any big merchandising come out of the first one? Quote

Did any big merchandising come out of the first one? Answer to your last question about merchandising of the first film: short answer: No. long answer: kinda. There is a ride / area in one of the Disney parks (Paris, I think?) But I reallly don't think that counts as "merchandise". Personally, I think this film is gonna flop hard. All that money Disney spent on the nearly-completed third film and just-started fourth one will be wasted. This sequence of events will probably be later used as a warning to filmmakers and producers to not bite off more than they can chew. I mean, it's like betting on a horse that's not even race-ready to win the Kentucky Derby, and then upping the bet for several races after that when you haven't even run the first one. You can't tell me James Cameron isn't nervous about this film coming out... his whole future career is gonna be tied to pulling this off! Edited December 14, 2022 by Murdoch17 Quote

a guy from somewhere Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Also going to see it day one, cannot wait. From the spoiler free reviews apparently theres one thing in the movie that was hyped up in all the trailers and just didn't do anything in the actual film, I'm praying to god that its not the sea dragon. It looks amazing, but considering the presence and we know what will happen to it from the trailers, it may be the reason why we didn't actually get a set on it. That and the fact its freaking enormous. Still excited for this film though, and the music too. Apparently the song is releasing tomorrow, made by the weekend of all people. How fitting for a Friday movie release. it is a real shame the sets are releasing in January as well, i have a feeling hype may have died off by then. hopefully not. As for wether it will flop or not, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and im cautiously optimistic. I dont want to overhype myself and be disappointed for the big day. Can we also unanimously agree on no spoilers unless its specified and under the covered tab? This page is gonna be a flurry of activity soon, as will a lot of avatar related pages across the web, and I dont want to be dodging spoilers if something comes up and I have to reschedule. Quote
Killian Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 I'm starting to think that this theme may not sell well, wave 1 has been heavily discounted here for weeks. I expect Avatar sets will become rare and expensive on the secondary market in a few years. Quote

I’ve no interest in seeing it as the first one was nothing but a very pretty white saviour story. However I read a few reviews that gave away plot elements and frankly it sounds like a very pretty white saviour story. We already had one of those, and I watched it with my 3-D glasses on desperately trying not to picture Dances with Smurfs. Quote

Still weird that they release the sets after the movie, but at least it’s not that big of a gap Yeah, I’m not one to take sides usually but Cameron has specifically said that if it can be connected to a movie like that in this way, that’s not a bad thing, but moreover shows how he created what he wanted and this is why it’s a good story. I’ll have to find the exact Reddit thread, but movies being copies of other media is nothing new. So why does avatar get the hate? I am curious what you think of the sets then @Murdoch17, why bother spreading hate for the movie if you like the sets, and if it’s the other hand, why would you join a forum to talk about the sets If you hate them? It’s fine to give opinions about the sets, and it’s fine to say that you dislike them. Then we can move on. But all this arguing over this business is boring. Again, no hate to you. You have your own personal opinion and that’s fine, but I’m curious to why you bother convincing people like me that avatar will flop, when it’s pretty clear that almost all of us here love the films and will see the new one? I love the design of the space whale, I love whales in general and I'm super happy we're finally getting a LEGO whale even if it's an alien one(and again, I love the design of the Tulkun)and the crabsuit is really cool too. Also, from the sounds of it, Payakan ia a really important character in the movie and in the franchise going forward. I haven't seen the movie yet or anything, that's just based on pre-release information. I'm really looking forward to seeing the film but I may not be able to until after the holidays unfortunately. A vast majority of the reviews are positive? Really? By the same token I’m not really sure where all the positivity is coming from. Honestly it’s going to and has split opinion, and big box office does not equal quality. Quote

I’d call 82% a vast majority, yes I know Rottentomatoes’ metrics are not always reliable since some critics count a 6/10 as fresh and others as rotten, and a review being fresh can mean anything between 6/10 and 10/10, but still, that cannot be spun as a negative result overall. The score on metacritics is 69, so also positive-leaning. Also, if you hate the franchise so much, why are you visiting a thread about the sets in the first place? Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 My apologies for the double post, but the submarine set might be a retail exclusive. I managed to order all of the other sets, but this one doesn’t seem to be widely available. Gonna be a busy weekend between watching the movie, building the sets (plus the onslaught of other early 2023 sets), and baking cookies Quote

ForgedInLego Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Just saw Avatar 2 in 3d and some random thoughts Spoiler Its fine. First one is better. Too much sequel bait. Seizure thing should've had a payoff. IMO the conflict went downhill once they left the jungle, but the sea people themselves were fun. The real Quarrich would not hesitate. The RDA had multiple Dragon Gunships in their port city (forget the name) and probably hundreds of Samsons and Scorpions, did they just leave the ekranoplan thing to die? Do they not have sonar? Felt like the beginning went down the Rise of Skywalker route of "now there are a billion bad guy ships". Wish there was more of Norm and Max, but I though Norm's avatar died. Anything else? Quote
