Went to see avatar yesterday, and I've had a day to collect my thoughts. Absolutely phenomenal, loved the whole thing. My only criticism is that maybe it was a bit too much, feeling like information overload. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. Decent plot, good characters (maybe some could have been fleshed out more) but overall a very good film. I do feel like the sets where pretty good for the movie too, although I stand by my opinion that the crab suit and MAKO sub should be swapped. Somewhat sad that we didn't get a sea wasp given how prominent it is, and the Samson made a reappearance at the start, and something I noticed is that the one shown seemed far more stubby and tall? It is much closer in proportion to the lego one, yet looking at the 2009 movie the Samson's there are the usual pancake, wide shape. Very strange, I wonder if lego took inspiration for the Samson from TWOW and not the original. Also nice to see that some elements do pop up from the last movie, meaning we can get parts of TWOW already, such as the AMP suits and link shack. Its a shame theres so much from avatar that we cant get in lego, purely because of the scale. I would love to have a sea dragon, or a larger metkyina village, or maybe a section of bridgehead? I would kill for an 18+ midiscale ISV Venture star, maybe on its side on a big black base, like the Hogwarts express. That would be amazing. Now, let's go over how the sets held up.

The 2 smallest sets, the ilu and the skim wing are pretty much perfect IMO, great figures, decent side builds and amazing main builds. the skimwing could be cheaper, but I appreciate it will probably be a fair bit bigger than the Ilu with the wings. speaking of which, I love the Ilu, it feels perfect, and Tuk was one of my favourite characters. my only criticism would be that Kiri and Tuk should have swapped places in the sets, given how quickly Kiri bonded with her Ilu and how Tuk was with Neyatri. Will pick up both day 1. The mako sub is pretty oversized in some parts and undersized in others and played a decent role in the film, maybe more than the crab suit, so I can see why it was picked as the standalone set. Will have to pick it up for Quaritch and Spyder, and the other 2 figs aren't bad. Netayem (I think thats his name, i'm still struggling with the alien spellings) looks good, and the chiefs son is fine. the price is still awful for £50 and so is that disgusting gapping at the side of the sub, I hope that it goes on discount at some point. I still wish it was a crab suit though, maybe with a kelp side build? Honestly all the RDA tech was pretty neat this film, I loved seeing bridgehead, the ISVs, the hornets and sea wasps look amazing, and I absolutely loved the maglev heist scene (any train heist is a win in my books). Hopefully we get a set like that, maybe a section of track with the train and a carriage and an exploding feature? Maybe 2 dire horses as well. Surprised we didn't see a skel suit in sets as it played a decent role. And again, the sea dragon and crab suits where amazing, I loved how the crabs move on land and literally swing of the ship (or ground effect vehicle?). I'm somewhat surprised we didn't get a picador or matador, the smaller boats used in the tulkun hunt. I hope we see that as a midrange set sometime. The reef is still the worst set in my opinion, and now that I've seen the movie, my opinion doesn't change. It doesn't represent the village too well and most of its size is built up from a sheet of plastic or vinyl, its a shame kiri is exclusive, as I may have to get it at some point if she doesn't come in another set IN a later wave (if there is one). The Payakan and the crab suit set wasn't very interesting to me before hand but I can safely say now that its one I want to pick up, i think that whilst the crab suit is a pretty rough rendition, the tulkun is very nice. The stubby right fin is also nice to see, identifying it as Payakan and the figs are great. It doesn't help though that the Navi are pretty lanky and thin, whilst the lego figures are pretty stocky.

Overall, I think the wave is a decent representation of the movie, but I would like to have seen 1 or 2 more sets based on other aspects of the film, such as the sea wasp or the train heist. A dream summer wave would be (going of this years wave, so 4 sets): smallest set at £40, a sea wasp with special moulded wing sections to get the quad rotor look, with a pilot and Neyatri, and a small floating island, for £50 a matador boat, with the Aussie hunter and Quaritch, along with Kiri and one of the metkyina kids as well. For £90 Im not really sure what we could get, maybe the cove of ancestors and an ilu? Its a hard price point to fill, so let me know if any of you guys have any ideas. And finally, for £130, as I mentioned before, I'd love to see a train heist set from the start of the film, with Jake, an omatacaya clan member, Lo'ak, a train conductor and a guard (not shown in the film but we have to have some RDA), and maybe a section of track/bridge with an exploding feature.

Would love to see more sets in the future for TWOW, hopefully we get it. I also find it pretty funny that lego, with them being all high and mighty about morals and ethics and no war, actively depict the hunting of a whale which when killed, has like 1 vial of Amrita taken from it, and is just dumped back into the sea. Wonder if they knew how that was gonna play out in the film....

Such a set as your £50 suggestion would be a great spot for a generic RECOM too which I think is really missing from this wave.

I’m not the biggest fan of the first film, but I’ll be watching the Way of Water tomorrow and couldn’t be more excited. Already have the AMP Suit and Floating Mountains sets but have yet to build them.

One thing I’ve noticed is that any RDA vehicle in these sets always come secondary to the Pandoran wildlife and location builds. As models for play and even display, they work well enough, but they’re always undersized and perhaps lacking in a bit of detail too. The AMP Suit, Samson, Mako Sub, and Crabsuit all feel like they’re missing something, despite being strong enough builds.

It’ll be interesting to see the longevity of this theme, the first two waves have already been solid with great vehicle, creature, and location builds. Even if the theme ends after this, it’s had a good run.

New reviews are up, I suggest Tiagos review as it covers all the sets. Some interesting notes, the skim wing is massive, I underestimated that wingspan, and the Mako sub has a hidden power source (cool I guess? I may just remove it and have the space for storage) and the gaps on the sides are awful, they really should have made a new part for the RDA cockpit. It definitely feels like the reef builds that are included (bar the ones that support the vehicle/creature builds) where the go-to filler builds when the main build didn't look like it would fit the set price threshold. The tulken actually looks very good, although the fins feel very static. I also didn't realise it before but the crab suit literally has the harpoon mounted on the arm that is fired into the tulken. I hope we see the sea wasp or kestrel in a latter wave. The skim wing and Ilu will definitely be day 1 buys, I love both, and I also like how concept art is inside the instructions.

The Skimwing is definitely too big imho and the Mako sub is definitely a disappointment. The powersource is a neat touch but I'd rather they put the effort into closing up the cockpits. The reef builds were definitely not filler as the stands with Pandora foliage are a consistent and important part of this theme for both films. The Tulkun's fins do actually have a good amount of posability but it would have been better if they were on ball joints instead of click hinges for the larger fins and it would have been nice if the tail had just a bit more range of motion. As it is it isn't bad though. I also love that the concept art is in the manuals. It helps to show off the accuracy of the sets and gives me a lot of nostalgia for the early days of the LEGO Star Wars theme where they would put a small image from a relevant scene from the films at the top of each page.

Indeed, the RDA's role is clearly diminished compared to their importance in the movie. I mean, I get why Lego is doing it (contemporary military aesthetics and all that...), but it hurts the line. We have a total of three RDA figures (not counting the rogues), two of them representing the same character, and that's it. Builds are secondary elements in the sets. I feel like the antagonist is missing.

But then, I have no idea how to solve that problem. Lego doing that big bad guy ship, which is a ship of Spoiler ? A Scorpion or Seawasp attack helicopter? An literal army builder? The only sets I could see are Dragon, because that is sufficiently sci-fi, and Valkyrie, because that is civilian and goes for the space shuttle look.

The Sea Dragon and Valkyrie are definitely the best bet for RDA focused sets but an "RDA compound" set would also be a decent option I think.

The problem with all of these ideas is to get a sufficient model, it would either have to be absolutely massive, or mini/midi scale builds. I would love a micro scale bridgehead map (the compound) that’s say £30, but at the end of the day who is that really gonna appeal to? Just us. I don’t think it’s recognisable enough and didn’t appear in the movie much, and most people don’t even know the name of the city. Heck, I only know so much about it because I’ve studied the base extensively, going through all the videos and artwork I can find. I brought the concept art book just so that I could see the RDA tech, and there’s so much concept art for bridgehead, it’s obvious that it was meant to play a larger role in the film.

Lego Avatar needs to appeal to kids, that’s the main selling point of the theme, and if adults can’t even remember stuff like that, what chances to kids have? Best to stick with the main aspects of the film, which they have. We have a crab suit and mako sub, which duckbricks has pointed out that the power source may actually be something different, if you know the orange spoiler. Most of the vehicles that appeal the most in the film (RDA wise) just aren’t able to be built in Lego form. I would love to have a minifig scale sea dragon or Valkyrie shuttle, but someone built a minifig scale shuttle a couple years back and it was like 2 meters long.

The only feasible RDA sets they could make boil down to 4 vehicles, the kestrel (I thought it was called the hornet, but the book proved me wrong!), the seawasp, the matador and the picador. There was a ton of auxiliary vehicles about but those 4 played the biggest roles. There’s other vehicles, like the swan (a halo warthog looking 6 wheeler) that shows up for a scene or 2 in the background, that I doubt anyone remembers.

I hope we do get more RDA, the book has pictures and drawings of all the tech and it looks superb, especially as it isn’t flashing past on a screen at 90mph, and it’s clear from the notes that the RDA design team went all out with the vehicles. If anyone is on the fence about getting the concept art book, I highly recommend it for the RDA tech alone. It’s beautiful.
At the end of the day, I’ll be happy just to get a summer wave of avatar sets, and I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed to see a seawasp, as I think that lends itself to be the best candidate to becoming brick built. The kestrel would be nice but may be too close to the samson with the dark Green military paint job. An interesting note is that Lego have said that they specifically want to stay away from the human side of things, which I disagree with completely, I think that’s what they should have more focus on. An 18+ ISV set up like the Hogwarts express would also be extremely welcome…

Anyone got the Skimwing 75576 yet? I'm currently thinking of what to replace the crossbow with. Decent image of Jake with his gun here: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/jamescameronsavatar/images/3/3e/Skimwing_closeup.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20220606173614

I think a long SW rifle with a black lightsaber hilt would work, the gun has some wodden detail on the hilt but I can't think of a piece that would work in such a small scale.

Re: RDA

The problem is not so much the target audience, the RDA simply clashes with Lego's 'no (contemporary) military'-policy. We all know this policy has loopholes the size of an aircraft carrier, but it is what it is. They made the conscious decision not to give the AMP its autocannon for example.

Also, are there even plans for more sets?

Btw, I believe the single RDA grunt minifig in the Payakan set will be expensive on bricklink...

Re: Sea Dragon

I don’t think that will ever happen.

The ship design itself is probably something Lego would do. But it is a whaler. ...a whaler protected by a PMC with a distinct contemporary military look and feel to it. This crosses so many lines, especially when you consider European sensitivities.

What you could do is a 'destroy the whaler' / 'protect the whales'-set but then you would have to add a Tulkun or another significant Na'vi presence. Maybe. And the price point of that would be insane.

The concept could work with a Matador, though.

Mind you, I would love to get Dr Garvin, such a cool character.

That‘s my biggest concern with this theme. What will the release schedule look like? Sets on the third movie can be expected for January 2025, which means a two year gap without any new material. They could theoretically release at least two or even three waves based on the first two movies in-between, and while there are plenty of vehicles and creatures left, I‘m not sure there is enough to sustain multiple waves :shrug_oh_well:

Also, the list of missing characters is very short, interestingly. In most licensed themes, missing characters is a way bigger issue than missing vehicles / creatures

Too be fair, avatars big selling point is the visuals, and the vehicles and creatures make up a lot more of my personal interests overall, and I know that goes for a lot of people I know IRL, which generally places a bigger importance on the world around the characters. Like sure I could name all the major characters, but I can much quicker list off all the tech the RDA use, like the ISV or the sea wasp. I guess it just comes down to personal preference.

As for actual schedules, i guess the theme will phase in and out of existence if Lego has deemed this first run to be acceptable, and I hope it has, I wouldn’t mind taking a break every couple of years and then coming back to discuss what new stuff we could see from the first trailers before Lego makes the sets. I know some summer set listings have gone up and some of the big names are reporting on them, so they seem clear from being false rumours, and I haven’t seen any avatar mentioned. @Falconfan1414 have you seen any listings for summer Avatar sets?

You are probably right. The world of Pandora as seen in the movies feel pretty complete, including almost all notable characters and creatures. (not counting RDA, of course). Sure, there is something left, like the High Camp, Spirit Tree or Hometree, and if you want a Pandora display (which is what the designers aimed for), their addition makes sense. But it is not essential.

It might also depend on how well the movie and the sets are doing. I know waves are planned well in advance, though.

I share that preference 100% but unless there is a major shift in Lego's philosophy, chances of getting more RDA are low. Apparently there has to be a strong(er) Na'vi presence in each set, and Lego has covered the Na'vi pretty well already.

However, I would love to be wrong. Thing is, I like the 'boring', real world inspired characters like Selfridge, Scoresby, Gen Admore, and especially Dr Garvin. But I have to admit they are a hard sell for a kid's toy-line.

Exactly, I get the navi viewpoint, but in the eyes of the RDA, earth is dying, and the entire pandora project is a last ditch attempt to save humanity. Thats something I really liked in the new film, the differing viewpoints -

Spoiler

In the first film it was pretty much clear cut humans bad, navi good. But in the new film, theres scenes of how merciless Neytiri is, willing to sacrifice spyder, and how brutal the navi treat the humans. On the flip side (maybe quite literally) one of the scenes that stuck with me from the movie was when a sea wasp crashed onto the crowded deck of the sea dragon, and with smoke and flames and burning fuel everywhere 2 guys in skelsuits and a recom ran straight in and started to drag people out of the fire towards life boats. Apparently avatar 3 will have a large focus on bad navi and good humans, along with volcanic territory and red will be the colour (red navi?). I'm excited to see how it will play out. Obviously I'm against the mindless killing of whales and jungle, but in the RDAs defence, the navi are threats to humanity existence, and thus must be delt with, especcily as the whole species is on the line. I hope if we do get an avatar 3 wave we do get more of a focus on the RDA side, especially as A) they may be the good guys, and B) heavy volcano machinery (looking at you, lego city volcano explorers) has always interested me a lot, and I'd love to see a sci-fi take on it. Maybe some sort of mountain walker version of the crab suit, with cable guns for traversing steep slopes? Like a cross between a 4 legged mech and a piston bully snow groomer.

Not that it's terribly likely but maybe we could see sets based on the upcoming Avatar game to keep the theme going until the next film. There are also several creatures and vehicles from the 2 films they can base sets on for a couple small waves.

The Payakan set would be an instand buy if it was not for the huge specialized pieces, which I just don't see any use for (other than for Payakan, obviously). Maybe if it goes on sale. The Mako sub seems poorly represented, although I would have to see it in person, but it certainly misses its operators. I know why Lego is doing it - the whole RDA discussion - it just seems weird. And I can assure you this is something I would have lamented as a kid, too.

Since I don't care for the minifigs much, I guess I will buy some sets without them so I can build Pandora better. The world works surprisingly well in Lego form, even if I am not sure about the animals.

I get that one can make a sensible case for the RDA (as you outlined perfectly) and who knows what Avatar 3 and 4 will show. But so far, the RDA are the bad guys, and what's more: they sport a distinctly contemporary military look. That means Lego is extremely careful in implementing them: no gun on the AMP, Na'vi paintjob on the Samson, no gunships etc.

The designers said quite directly they don't want to feature human stuff but cannot entirely avoid it. If the roles reverse, and the RDA become the obviously good guys and may look even a bit more sci-fi, and less early 21st century PMCs... then I think we have a good chance for RDA sets.

Until then, scientists and their stuff is our best hope. It's basically how we got our Samson. ...which I immediately reverted to standard RDA colours, plus proper missile launchers, door guns, and a 30mm. I know the Samsons did not have one. But hey, it is Lego. We can and should do our own work with it.

@Flieger I feel the same way about Payakan. Having him be brickbuilt would’ve made for significantly more interesting build, but I also understand that the large moulded pieces do help give the model a presence and heft as well that satisfy the creature’s unique shaping.

The Way of Water was an incredible film, the introduction of Jake and Neytiri’s family definitely helped us care for the characters as a whole much more than the first film did, and enough has been said about the immersive visual effects and underwater scenes. The frame rate was…something though. A lot of the action scenes felt like watching a normal video on 1.25x speed.

As for the sets themselves, there’s no denying their accuracy! They’re great enough for what they are, but I won’t be picking any up given that other themes take precedence for me. I think something that feels off for me is the Na’avi minifigures’ taller heights making their proportions seem overly lanky. This is especially pronounced for bulky characters like Chief Tonowari.

Not sure if more sets are on the menu this year. It appears that lego_minecraft_goat has released all the info they had, and I doubt that Avatar is the only wide release theme that somehow eluded them :shrug_oh_well: Maybe there could be a small wave in early 2024, followed by a bigger one in time for Avatar 3?

Yeah, it’s not looking good, so I’m gonna take what I can get with these 2 waves.
I saw the movie again today, I highly recommend a second viewing as now that you know the plot, it doesn’t really matter if you miss anything so you can focus on the details, and every frame is amazing with some crazy details like scars on an ilu or the animal looking mechs the RDA uses at bridgehead. There’s a massive crane in the background of the main bridgehead scene which looks cool. But as most of the vehicles seen were used for tulkun hunting, I doubt Lego will give us any more. I have a sneaking suspicion that they weren’t told everything about the movie when designing the sets, but then again, their morales are so over the place it’s hard to know these days. Maybe they did get told the mako sub would be used only to hunt whales and they greenlit it anyways? I’d say the 2 aircraft, the kestrel and the sea wasp have the highest chance of getting made as they are pretty far distanced from our current tech. But yeah, I didn’t expect this theme to last, as great as it is. The hate train from the first Avatar kinda ended the race before it even began, and the avatar 2 sets remain to be seen as to how they sell. I’ve decided to hold back on the Ilu and skimwing till they go up on Amazon, then I’ll get them with fast shipping. I will definitely get those 2, and the Payakan and mako if they go on sale.

Something I spotted rewatching Avatar I: the crab driver looks a lot like Cpl Wainfleet. Especially that pentagonal insignia/device is a bit of a giveaway (clearer in other shots). The trousers don't match, but they are reused from Quaritch. Also, obviously, the Avatar I digital camouflage...

Can't disagree. It looks nice enough... but I like Lego for the bricks.

Funny enough, the brickbuilt Pandora looks surpringly nice. Had you told me in 2009 that Lego can do Pandora justice, I would not have believed it. Yet, somehow the blocky aesthetics of Lego turns Pandora and its creatures into a different kind of art. Thus I would have loved to see a blocky Tulkun, although I do understand that Lego did not introduce these expensive pieces out of lazyness. I guess if they could have done it without them, they probably had done so.

Looking at those beautiful new speed champions sets, that windshield on the black and white McLaren looks like a perfect fit for a sea wasp cockpit. I hope we get it as a set, and if not, atleast we got a decent cockpit for a MOC.

Better suited for the Scorpion, imho.

The SeaWasp sports a canopy with golden coating as a visual reference to current US fighters. (the contemporary military design cues are everywhere with the RDA; though it has to be noted that this kind of coating goes back to the 60ies, even late 50ies, depending on what you count). Anyway, that canopy is better reflected by a transparent yellow or bright orange piece. ...which, fortunately, do exist. :classic:

Nice catch with Wainfleet, I can see it now. That’s actually kinda nice knowing that we have a fig of Quaritchs right hand man. I also see that someone has been reading up on the art of avatar! Lovely book, Ben Procter and his team did a great work with the visuals. I agree, it may actually work better as a scorpion. I hate to say it, but I do believe now that Lego avatars days are numbered, especially as the only other sets that they could make are from vehicles that are used in whale hunts… apart from the kestrel, which may be possible but unlikely with the domed cockpit “eyes” and the heavy weaponry.

It would be really disappointing if we don't get any more Avatar sets until the 3rd film(assuming we get any then and I certainly hope we do). At least the ones we do have are all fantastic and I plan on getting as many of them as I can. I got the Thanator set for Christmas and I ordered the Payakan set last night.

The underwater scenery is stunning, and the Ilu itself is really well done. Minifigures are great too.

Thinking about maybe buying more sets.

Exactly. Even if those were the last sets before the third movie, I’d still be satisfied since they captured the essence of both movies perfectly :classic:
