Really wish the underwater sets could connect like the first wave

This was brought up In a design interview I believe, mainly down to how the designers wanted a more open feel and not restrict the build to a set layout with clips. But they wanted to keep some modularity so all the bases are octagonal, thus you can technically put them together, but not physically connect them. Honestly id prefer it if all could connect but I'm more than happy with the current way, especially considering that it represents ocean terrain which is famous for its wild, alien and random designs.

Yeah, I understand your point, but even then, you could customize the arrangement of your wave 1 avatar sets

im on the edge about the Ilu discovery, should I wait until it goes on sale, or get it now instead of buying 2023 friends

Forgot to mention I purchased the Ilu set as well, its beautifully done and as its the lowest priced, I dont think it will get much of a sale. I'm waiting to see if I can snag the avatar 1 sets on sale before they get retired, I need that Samson set but theres no way in hell lego is getting £90 from me, as much as I love this theme and want to see it continue im drawing the line there, considering the Samson build is pretty rough IMO. Anyways, back on track, the figures for the Ilu set are pretty good, although they dont really capture the characters from the movie very well. Tuk eccpesily doesnt really work as she had long legs and arms and a smaller body but in the set its the opposite, with short legs and arms and a regular body. The display base builds are very nice and use a lot of nice parts, and the Ilu itself is also a pretty cool build, definitely looks good on display (especially if you have Tsireya on the Ilu and Tuk swimming with it). Drawbacks of the Ilu are the wings have a somewhat noticeable "lego 2023" copyright thing on it in the centre, and the back of the creature feels somewhat blocky despite the curves used. The Ques (Navi hair connector) are also hard to attach to the head as they are just about too far away.

Overall theres a low chance of this set going on sale, and its pretty good solid little set, giving 2 minifigs from the different tribes and different height, so the variety is nice. The build itself is pretty good, and the head mold is fantastic, defiantly one of the better brick built/moulded head cross creations from lego. I defiantly recommend it, 7.5/10 set IMO. I'm just happy we have lower priced avatar sets. will prob pick up the skim wing if I see it drop to £25 as well.

I don't know. I feel like them being separate represents how spacious the ocean is, instead of everything being cramped together.

I mean, it would look awful on display.

Buy the 2023 Friends sets. Always prioritise the better sets!

But yeah, Friends is more popular than Avatar, so I expect lots of retailers to be offering better discounts on Avatar sets a lot sooner than Friends.

The first Avatar wave was already a third off or better within about a month of the theme launching in the toy stores here. They had to reduce the price during the weeks running up to Xmas because even parents in panic buying for the holidays mode weren't buying Avatar

I built the Payakan set last night and man, I absolutely love it! I knew I would love it but this is already a contender for favorite set of the year and we've already gotten a Ghost Rider set(I'm obsessed with Ghost Rider), an amazing TIE Bomber after 20 years(which I also bought and built), and a 501st battle pack(I'm a huge Clone Wars fan) and we're not even a month into the year.

I know some people have been hating on the large specialized molds for his head but I,absolutely love them and I think they really bring the whole set together. Could they have been brick-built? Of course but I vastly prefer my LEGO animals to be molded and having all the Pandoran creatures be mostly brick-built with a few specialized molds is a reasonable compromise, especially for something as large as a Tulkun. My only gripe with the set is that I feel the click hinges for his bottom jaw could have been covered better, at least by 1 stud's length on either side of the hinges.

When the Payacan Set is available at 40%+ off, I will buy it. Just like the Toruk Makto Set, which is a good set, but I would have never bought without the 44% discount on amazon.^^

Luckily in my country the Avatar sets are discounted upon release, paid some 65€ for the Site&Samson set, and I am pretty sure it will go down further.

While the Samson is rough, it is basically what you can expect at that size, and modifying it is relatively easy as it is a standard helo build - with the exception of the ducted fans maybe. I am very happy with the set, although I would have preferred human-form Dr Spellman, and Cpt Chacon could have used a flight helmet. The build for Site 26 is nice and there are a lot of useful parts. And it all looks pretty nice. At full price it is not worth it, though.

Hate is a much too strong word.

I for one often disassemble my sets, and rarely use them as long-term displays. Payakan with its specialized pieces is a display only. Thing is, the heads of some of the smaller animals I can use for other fantasy creatures, dinosaurs etc. With Payakan that is a lot more difficult. (And I do believe the size of the Tulkun would have allowed for much of it to be brick build, using much smaller moulds in critical places like the echolocation organs).

Exactly. Even if those were the last sets before the third movie, I’d still be satisfied since they captured the essence of both movies perfectly :classic:

In as far as the feel of the Pandoran landscape and world is concerned, I absolutely agree. In as far as the themes are concerned, certainly not. I rewatched the first Avatar and the technology vs nature theme runs deep in every single detail of the visual storytelling of movie. Without the RDA that theme is basically lost. I know why Lego made that decision, especially when it comes to the second Avatar...

Any idea how long will the avatar sets be available before retiring? Till the end of the year?

Usually, the shelf life of widely-released sets is 1.5 years. Unless they sell terribly, I'd expect them to stick around for a while :classic:

I can understand that but I think you're probably in the minority of the people who are buying these sets as I think most are going to be displaying them for some time, plus with the high level of detail and the inclusion of display stands, they're intended to be displayed.

While they easily could have made more of the Tulkun brick-built, I don't think it would have looked nearly as good. I personally don't mind highly specialized molds as long as they still feel like they fit the LEGO "style". I also see them as a challenge to creative builders to see how the pieces can be incorporated into mocs. I've always enjoyed seeing how I could use complicated molds in unique ways and I definitely see a LOT of potential with the side mouth flaps and I bet there could be some interesting uses for the main head piece as well. Off the top of my head I could see it used as part of an alien giant squid/Lovecraftian monster or part of a futuristic/alien building or even a boat or spacecraft. I look forward to seeing what people come up with.

I wonder of Lego is working on Avatar 3 sets right now.

Too early. They should start working on them near the end of the year, since the whole process between set inception and release usually takes around a year :classic:

Payakan will appear in future movies and so will the reef kids, crazy we might get another Payakan set in 2024. :moar:

Info on the future from Jim interviews:

I knew he would be but I'm very glad to get confirmation on that. I bet if we get him again, he'll be black instead of blue and will reuse the same head molds. I could also see them either downsizing him to make him cheaper or making him even bigger for accuracy since he's only an adolescent Tulkun in TWoW.

The sets will look so good with the Ash People as the primary antagonists. Cameron kinda sold me on Avatar 3 with that comment, it sounds really good.

And for Lego it is a golden opportunity to introduce an adversary in substantial numbers without having to release modern PMC on mass, which they are obviously reluctant to do. I agree the concept of the ash people sounds cool, and they probably provide a nice visual contrast to the blue and azure Na'vi we have so far, further flashing out the world of Pandora.

However it should be noted that we have a full scale war with the RDA coming, so I guess they will remain the main antagonists in the movies.

I am just glad Avatar 2 seems to be a success. That makes new sets more likely than if it had been a flop, though it also may depend on the sales of the current sets. Unfortunately I have no idea how they are doing.

the first wave hasn't sold particularly well as before the film they where on constant sale, after the film they are back to regular prices (damn it!) apart from the site 26, which isn't even on sale now, its just hard locked on £65 which im glad to see, I stand by the fact that that set is absurdly overpriced at £90 and is way better at £65. The new movie sets have nothing to note yet, apart from the fact that the Ilu discovery (the cheapest set) is sold out completely which im glad to see. Hopefully lego takes the hint that not everybody is made of money! if I had to guess, the sets underperformed, but not by much. Its like just below the threshold for continuing in the summer. Hopefully we get another wave in 2024, though I'd say its unlikely.

Yeah, James Cameron has actually confirmed that he's not taking the 'Marvel approach' and doing a different villain each movie.

Still, I hope the sets give us a fair amount of the Ash People.

I am only unpinning this thread because we have so many pinned threads in Licensed at the moment, and there is no further Avatar LEGO rumoured for now.

If any more rumours pop up for 2023, I'll pin the topic again.

Hope this isn’t the beginning of the end for this theme. I love it to death, despite the prices. Let’s also hope we see some more sets for 2024 when that comes out.

I think if these two waves do well enough, the theme could definitely resurface when the next film comes out, but might not have any releases before then.

Personally, I’m fine with that. They did everything from the first two films that I wanted them to tackle :classic:

Agreed for the most part, I think they did pretty well covering it, only thing missing in my opinion is another MAKO sub style set for the RDA that has either a kestrel, sea wasp or a standalone samson build, a pilot, and 2 RDA troops and a navi. Throw in a star wars style weapons ground cart as a side build. Yes it’s a glorified military helicopter set, but given the prominence and the “cool factor” of them, I really think Lego missed out on giving us a decent set. It would be a good way to army build RDA and honestly I would have brought 2 or 3 over the time it was released. The samson is alright in the site 26 set but the link shack and floating mountains drives the price up, and the Sampson’s proportions are awfully stubby and tall, despite the pilot having to lie all the way down in the cockpit.

Well, amazon.de nearly always has most of the sets for 25-45% off, the prices are alright with the discount. :D

Ich really love the nature included, the machinery and some of the animals not so much. And I don`t have any positive feelings towards the navi minifigs. So bricklink it is for the sets I don`t already have.^^

I've finally seen the movie.

Hot f***ing damn.

What a fantastic film. I expected it to look pretty good, but I didn't expect to not question the reality of this movie for a second. The high fps were a little jarring, but otherwise imo this is the greatest looking movie ever. I wasn't a big fan before, but I sure as hell am now. This is probably how people felt after seeing the first one in 2009.

Little short on cash rn, but the next LEGO sets I'm gonna get are Way of Water sets. Seriously considering getting multiple Ilu. Still not a fan of the Na'vi figures, but they're not my main reason for wanting these sets.

Though now I am a little bummed the sets don't seem to sell very well. There isn't really anything more from this movie (or the first one) I'd like a set of, but I hope there will at least be another wave of sets for the third movie next year.

Not that it is a surprise, but the Crabsuit Driver is apparently the most expensive minifig of the theme. So much so that it almost makes more sense buying the set (which is heavily discounted all the time, between 30-40% here).

I know the minifig is popular in part because of its military look but still it should be a hint: the human part of Avatar can sell, too.

That is not to say they should focus on it, but sets like the Thanator vs AMP should be more frequent to get a less expensive options for human characters.
