Similar remarks were made regarding the Black Panther Bust. I find that so surreal because it can only mean two things. 1) They're lying because they don't want to face any criticism 2) They're actually telling the true? Which would arguably be worse? Like I understand Lockdown keept designers to phisically meet, but like haven't they heard of something called The Internet™? That's were the site interviewing you is? 3 hours ago, BrickBob Studpants said: Not sure why people were this obsessed with the idea of an anniversary in the first place. Do you really want golden minifigs that badly? Personally, I in particular have always been really dismisive of the idea because I don't really see the point of it, but this time it's more about the designers totally refusing to take any negative feedback Quote
GoldenNinja3000 Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 (edited) I don't really blame Mark Stafford for his comments. What is he going to say? Designers have restrictions and they get PR training. LEGO wouldn't let him say anything that would reflect negatively on them, so of course these interviews are blaming everything on COVID and uncertainty/disconnection during the pandemic. I think the truth is that the designers had enough on their plate between the 18+ push and the issues caused by COVID. So I can believe the anniversary falling through the cracks but I don't think they outright forgot, I think it simply wasn't a priority in 2020. By the time everything settled down it was probably too late to do any anniversary sets without totally phoning them in. Edited November 14, 2022 by GoldenNinja3000 Quote

I mean, between that and some other excuses they've made like: -we couldn't figure out how to count anniversaries (for why we didn't get super heroes anniversary sets). This is a stupid enough excuse for DC, but for marvel it's either the 10th or 20th anniversary, so it's not like you'd have to put something like "16th anniversary" on the box. -recent DC content has been too adult focused (for why there was one (1) dc system set this year) *If you're not aware, there was a theatrically released animated kid's DC movie about the justice league's pets this year in which Batman and Superman have supporting roles* It really seems like the lego designers are giving BS excuses. Reminds me of "all yellow clones look alike" from last year with the republic gunship set. Edited November 14, 2022 by Mandalorianknight Quote

Reminds me of "all yellow clones look alike" from last year with the republic gunship set. The DC thing is a good point. In this interview they make it seem like there's no DC sets because there are no movies. That's understandable (to a degree) because movies keep these franchises relevant in consumers' eyes, but DC got two non-Batman movies this year! It's not like I wanted SuperPets or Black Adam sets, but the content was there for LEGO to make more sets. Also, what about our annual DC D2C? I was really enjoying the big display models from 2019-2021. I'd buy a UCS 1966 Batmobile in a heartbeat and I've never even seen the series. That seems like a no-brainer set to me, or even more Dark Knight Trilogy sets after how popular last year's minifigure-scale Tumbler was. It feels more like the designers have given up because sets weren't selling well, but if that's the case LEGO should be trying something new instead of throwing in the towel. Quote
PhoenixBuilder Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 I don’t buy the Covid reasoning, but also don’t know that it was ever going to happen without Marvel themselves marking the anniversary? Lego was aligned with them eg for the 10th anniversary of the Studios (thinking of the Avengers Tower GWP that featured that logo) and then more recently the wave of Infinity Saga sets at a similar time to others from other companies. It might just be that without Marvel wanting to celebrate eg 10 years of The Avengers there wasn’t much impetus? Quote
squiz18 Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 5x vip points coming on Black Panther bust, which is equivalent to 20% off. Apparently starts tomorrow and last until 28th november Wonder how long until hulkbuster receives the same treatment..... Quote

I've never heard of 5x vip points before... that does not bode well for the set. I hope that they realize that the modulars are the ones selling best and start making mostly those for D2Cs, but you just KNOW they'll get the wrong message and decide marvel D2Cs don't sell. 6 hours ago, PhoenixBuilder said: I don’t buy the Covid reasoning, but also don’t know that it was ever going to happen without Marvel themselves marking the anniversary? thebricksbear Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 I'm in the camp with whomever asked "why does anyone even want anniversary sets?" We got the Infinity Saga wave, which was probably both BETTER than any anniversary wave that could've happened, and kind of WAS the anniversary wave itself. Maybe I'm alone in this but the gold HP anniversary figs look terrible, you have to buy a couple of huge, bad sets to get them all, and they haven't even held value anyway. I have no interest in that for Marvel. Instead, we know Marvel is going to have an MCU-less Q3 and Q4 this year, so I'd love to see them catch up on D+ and Infinity Saga sets and not just hammer us with endless What If mechs again. Quote
Legocentrico Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 (edited) What is Q3 and Q4? the gold minifigures reward fans of the line. if you have to buy sets you hate for minifigures, it means that you are not their target Edited November 14, 2022 by Legocentrico Quote

We got the Infinity Saga wave, which was probably both BETTER than any anniversary wave that could've happened, and kind of WAS the anniversary wave itself. The Infinity Saga wave of sets was primarily focused on Endgame. This was a problem as it meant the only way that was going to occur again would be in a special occasion such as an anniversary or future Avengers movie. We've had one or two legacy sets since then but the focus seemed to be shifting away from them this year and the explanation many had hoped for is that we were going to get an anniversary legacy set wave in Q3/Q4 2022. Sadly this has not happened and it appears we only have two potential legacy sets for 1HY 2023 so far - being the Quinjet and the IW Hulkbuster Wakanda battle set. In general those wanting a larger focus on legacy stuff wanted an anniversary wave, that was the main desire. You did have some wanting gold figures and things, Iron Man eventually does need a golden figure to represent the 'Midas' suit, however the main appeal was getting legacy sets from a variety of past movies. Depending on pricing the golden figures normally acted as a bonus for people interested in the sets rather than just being viewed as an additional cost. Edited November 14, 2022 by Scarilian Quote

But the bust hasn't been out for much longer. The seven sets discounted are all adult themed ones, maybe this year will be peak giant d2cs and they will scale it back a but in future. Quote

Most D2C's probably take around 2-3 years of development so if any others are in the process intended for a 2023/2024 release these should probably still happen. 2025 would be the most likely time period when it would be impacted as any that were just starting or about to be approved around now could be pushed back or cancelled as an initial reaction to sales. If the sales figures are bad enough for $350 sets to be part of a 5x double VIP promotion after less than two months, I think we'll see the effects as early as late 2023. LEGO could just stop development on theoretical 2025 D2Cs and spread out the releases of currently developed models. As in, if 25 $200+ D2Cs were planned for 2023, LEGO could only release 15-20 and push some into 2024. 2022 has been absolutely insane for these huge display pieces so I think this year will be the peak. At least, I hope so. Quote

First the Hulkbuster now this, it seems Lego is gearing towards producing mech scaled sets and I don’t like it. Ideally this will not be the case. I know I’m a year late but looking at the Daily Bugle, what is this Doctor Octopus based off of? I couldn’t find any Google images of Doc Oc that matched this costume. Any ideas what source Lego pulled inspiration from for this dark green figure? Also when will we get a classic comic Electro/Lizard? Its been a long time coming. Hopefully the new Rocket Mech is comic based. Excited to see both that and the Hulk mech. Quote

Its really weird one but the Ock was based off the premium statue design mixed with the Black and Gold trim parts of the PS4 Ock! If you look at both side by side you can see how they mixed them together! Likewise the Dark Purple and Lime Goblin fig we got with the Bat belt buckle was also based off a premium statue! I was remarking mostly in regards to cancellations, I cannot see Lego straight-up cancelling D2C's for 2023, but I could see a reduction either via spacing them via delaying many of them. Honestly, I think the main problem is that they have lost a sense of the target market and over-estimated the interest in certain aspects and tried to appeal to markets that were not there. A market exists for a Black Panther Bust, but at that scale you isolate it to those who are fanatical about the character. A market exists for the Hulkbuster, but at that scale you need to focus on accuracy and display as opposed to adding a play feature to store another set. 11 minutes ago, Legocentrico said: Eiffel Tower……. It is still possible we don't see anything this week, this week just seems likely given the reveal/leak of the mech sets last year was 15th November, at just under 3 hours from now. I would'nt suggest hyping yourself up over specific days/times though, but more a general sense of 'it should be revealed/leaked this week or next week' given they normally put most of the January sets on Lego Shop@Home on December 1st so people can get enticed into the sets when thinking of what to get around/after Christmas. Legocentrico Posted November 15, 2022 Posted November 15, 2022 Marvel is a super star. she gets a lot of expensive sets and always makes us wait a long time for pictures. Unfortunately most of the sets suck and the sales are not in the top 5 😅 so, Lego, why do you do it??? 💆🏻 Quote
